VHBL for Super Collapse 3

What is it?

Vita Half-Byte Loader is a project to port the PSP homebrew loader HBL to the Playstation Vita, through the PSP emulator on the Playstation Vita.

This is the official VHBL download page for people who own a copy of the PSP Game Super Collapse 3. If you don’t own this game, go back to the VHBL page to see if we have a version of VHBL working with a game you own.

Check the VHBL page for more details on this tool.

Choose the file that matches your version of the game:

How to Install and Run HBL on Super Collapse 3

  • It is *strongly* recommended that you turn of all wireless connections on your PS Vita, and that you use OpenCMA on your PC instead of the regular CMA. This is recommended because otherwise your console has a way to force you to upgrade the firmware even before you get a chance to use the exploit.
  • Extract the HBL archive matching your version of the game in your CMA PSP Savedata folder. It is a folder on your PC named PSSAVEDATA/[lots of random characters here]. If you don’t know where it is, check your settings in CMA
  • Connect your PS Vita to the PC through the CMA, it should give you the possibility to copy the savedata from your PC to the Vita. If not, you probably extracted it in the wrong folder. (Note: You will also want to install some homebrews with a similar technique, read the section below)
  • To run HBL, start the game, select “Continue” in the Main Menu. Load the VHBL savegame, then go to “High Scores”. At this point, VHBL should start

How to Install and Run Homebrews

Installing homebrews on the PSP was an easy task. On the Vita, until better solutions are provided, it’s quite a pain in the ***.
The CMA will only let you copy savedata, and will not recursively browse folders.

To address this, HBL comes with a tool that can extract archives with a specific structure.

Packaging the homebrew for installation on the Vita:
1) download PSP homebrews from your favorite website
2) extract the homebrew somewhere on your hard drive, and with your favorite utility, zip it again with the *store* setting (no compression), in a file that you will name “install.zip”
3) take any PSP savedata (but not the one used for HBL!), and add the “install.zip” to that folder, in your PC CMA folder. so your PSP Savedata will look something like this:
in folder PSSAVEDATA/1a2b3c4def5678/UCUS12345000/ (or something like this) you will have the following files:
– ICON0.png
– PIC1.png
– DATA.bin
– install.zip

Here you can download an example of packaged homebrew: Doom

1) run OpenCMA on your PC, and CMA on your Vita
2) copy the previously packaged SAVEDATA (see above) with your homebrew in “install.zip” on your Vita
3) run HBL (how to run HBL is explained in the previous section)
4) navigate with the HBL menu to the SAVEDATA folder, then go to the folder you just downloaded (in my example, UCUS12345000), and click cross or circle on it
5) At this point, the HBL menu should ask you if you want to install the homebrew. select yes, and wait until HBL is done extracting your homebrew
6) The homebrew is now installed, and you can run it by going to the GAME folder, if everything went well, a new subfolder with your homebrew has been created here, and you can run the homebrew

OpenCMA is strongly recommended to install if you want to use VHBL. Open CMA is a tool by Virtuous Flame that allows you to copy files from and to your vita without being connected to the internet. This is useful, especially if you don’t want Sony to forcefully update your firmware.

So uh. when we install these homebrews, where are they located in the vita? What if I want to take ROMS out and put new ones in?

    • metalslug53 says:

As far as I can tell, everything gets saved into the PSP “GAMES” directory on the memory card. To access the place where everything is saved, you can do so in the Settings option on the Vita. When you open that, you have to click “Application Data Management” and choose “Add-On Data (PSP)” to see what all is installed. The only things you will see are “Corrupt Data” files, but you can distinguish which one is which by their size. If you wish to add more roms, you have to rezip your install.zip file and reinstall it. (As far as I know)

So far, I have been able to get MasterBoy, PicoDrive, and mh gpsp working. I have encountered a slight problem however. When I extracted the mh gpsp files to the card, I guess I saved everything inside the install.zip file INSIDE an addition “install” folder, so when it was extracted, it was saved to a new “Install” directory on the memory card instead of the “GAME” directory. Normally, when saved to the “GAME” directory, I can remove the files using the Vita system settings menu, but since everything was saved to this new directory, I cannot remove the files this way. Is there any way to remove these files, or are they stuck there now?

    • redcero says:

go to settings on vita, then application data and to psp data and there are lots of corrupt files there, find the size and delete. This is the way I’ve been doing it. I read it could also be done using CMA/

      • metalslug53 says:

No, see that is the issue. Those files are files of the game data created in HBL and placed in the “GAMES” folder of the PSP directory on the memory card. Because I somehow had the emulator in an extra “install” folder, it created a new directory on the card called “Install” and did not put it in the “GAMES” folder, so I cannot delete it with this method. I have tried. =(

Picodrive 1.51 (the UN-exploited version ) works but the sound is glitchy and high pitched

  18. Wisdomseeker89 says:

Fixed the Sound Issue with Picodrive: Sound rate needs to be changed from 22050HZ stereo to 44100HZ stereo

  19. Need help says:

need help on the compression part. like how do you change the compression settings to store and not to compression

    • metalslug53 says:

Typically that setting should be in the program you use to compress your files. In WInRAR, there is a drop down bar that allows you to choose your compression menu right in the window before you compress anything.

VHBL itself works great. So does Doom. Having problems with Picodrive. Using v1.51. I can get genesis or Sega CD games to start, but they crash when I hit select. Also, Sega CD games have an MP3 initialization error when I start them and the sound isn’t great. Overall though, can’t thank Wololo and theCobra enough! Maybe one day davee will even release his hen…
