Half Byte Loader FAQ

This is the FAQ for Half Byte Loader. For Half Byte Loader downloads, check this page. For Half Byte Loader latest news, check the HBL category.

What is Half Byte Loader?

Half Byte Loader (a.k.a HBL, a.k.a the Valentine Project) is a tool that allows to run fan-made games on the sony PSP. HBL is designed to run on the Sony PSP on official firmwares (OFW).

Does HBL work on my PSP XXXX with a firmware Y.YY?

HBL works on ALL models of PSP, and ALL firmwares up to 6.60 included. This includes the PSP Go, and is independent on where you bought your psp.

How do I install it?

How to run HBL depends on the version you use (the Patapon or the sukkiri version, or the XMB version). You’ll find dozens of tutorials on the internet, but basically unzip the files to your memory stick, run the game, load the savedata, and you’re set. There’s no complex manipulation involved and no risk for your psp.

I installed HBL correctly, but when I try to load the Patapon savegame, it tells me the data is corrupted

You either have firmware 6.30 (or above), or you downloaded a patched version of Patapon2. Make sure you have OFW 6.20 or less, and re-download the Patapon2 Demo. Do not download this demo from the Sony PSN, as their version has been patched.
If you have a firmware higher than 6.20, give a try to the sukkiri version of HBL

I installed HBL correctly, but it just freezes and my psp shuts down when I press R

You installed HBL wrong. Try to get it again from a trusted source, for example, the official download page. You will also find autoinstallers on the net that do everything for you, try that. Most likely, this is because you put some files in an incorrect place, or you got an old version of my crafted savegame. 100% of the people who asked this question to me ended up realizing they were doing something wrong, so don’t start thinking your psp has “some special security”.

What is the Difference between HBL and a Custom firmware (CFW)?

HBL allows you to run homebrews on a PSP that has an official firmware. A Custom firmware is a piece of software that is usually flashed on your PSP’s flash memory. A Custom Firmware patches your PSP firmware to run unsigned software. Usuall CFW allow users to run plugins, isos (backup of official games), homebrews, and allow you to customize your XMB (psp menu). HBL “only” allows you to run homebrews.

Does HBL run isos ?

OK, but can HBL run a homebrew that would load ISOs?

A HEN is probably what you are looking for. Such a tool might not be available for your firmware, so check our page for the HEN

Can HBL load PS1 games?

Not for now. We don’t know if it is possible yet.

What’s the big difference between Kernel/User mode anyways?

To make things simple, let’s say that the User mode allows you to do limited things with your psp, like running homebrew games. Kernel modes gives you total control of the psp.

Is there a list of homebrews that can run with HBL?

There is no definite list yet. HBL is still a work in progress and a compatibility list would be made obsolete every week or so. However you can have a look at http://wololo.net/talk/viewforum.php?f=3 to get some names of homebrews

Why do you waste your time with a homebrew loader when you could spend it finding a kernel exploit and creating a CFW/HEN ?

Finding an exploit is difficult. Finding a kernel exploit is even more difficult. Half Byte Loader is the result of months of work, and if you can’t appreciate it, well too bad for you. I’m sure better solutions will come in the future, but for now you should be patient and accept what you get.

Which version of Daedalus (the Nintendo 64 emulator) works on HBL?

I don’t know exactly. I personally use Daedalus R13, but it does not offer the level of playability I expect from an emulator. The team behind deadalusX64 is working hard on new releases, and I believe they are making efforts to get their emulator compatible with HBL, please contact them directly

GPSP crashes when I exit

That’s a known issue, please check the list of issues before reporting a bug.

The sound is weird in picodrive

change your settings for sound in picodrive to 44000Hz

Can you make my favorite game work in HBL?

We take those requests into account, but usually the best is for you to contact the homebrew creator and ask them for HBL compatibility. HBL runs in a very restricted environment, so we will never get 100% homebrews to work, but sometimes it’s just a matter of changing a few function calls in the homebrew itself.

I can’t quit homebrews, the “home” button doesn’t work!!!

This is a known issue in HBL, but there are a few workarounds. First, try to press simultaneously select and start in the homebrew, to see if it takes you back to the HBL menu. If this doesn’t work, and if you don’t mind running the patapon demo all over again, you can set the variable return_to_xmb_on_exit=1 in the file hbl/hbl_config.txt. This will fix the home button issues, but you can’t go back to the HBL menu when you quit a homebrew.

I wish it could run IS0s (CS0s), or at least PS1 Games, and not just emulators!… 🙁

Hi, My firirware for my PSP 2006 which was running mod 5.03 Release B. However, I accidentally upgraded to version 5.55.

I couldn’t find any info on how to downgrade back to 5.03 Release B or C, so I just installed HBL on my PSP 2006. How can I run all my existing ISOs and CSO files?

Also, which directory should I put this in?

  7. Ulimit says:

Listen, I know the HBL’s not supposed to run ISOs/CSOs right now. But is it possible? I mean, is there ANY chance that it’ll be possible in the future?

  8. Man, THANK YOU! Now I can play Super Nintendo roms on my PSP!

By the way, my version is 3000 slim, with OFW 6.20, and the homebrews I tested worked very well.

    Again: THANKS! 🙂

  9. Lynden Bastin says:

Doe this work with Australian psp’s?, if so wat version do i use?

  10. Shadow says:

Works with every PSP. If you have a PSP with firmware 6.20 or lower then use the Patapon 2 demo. Patapon 2 HBL is very stable and can run most firmwares.

However if you are on 6.30 or 6.31 you’ll need to obtain a UMD copy of Hot Shots Golf to run the golf version of HBL. This version is not as stable however wololo and his team are working on it.

Please be patient if you are above 6.20 as wololo is not god and niether are any of the people assisting him.

Also wololo has already stated that ISO/CSO support will never come because this is a user mode exploit and not a kernal exploit. Be grateful of what this chap has brought to the scene and dont under estimate his work 🙂

Good job on HBL. It’s very nice to at least being able to run a few cool homebrew games and emulators. I’m curious as to see if HBL will someday support PSX eboots, as i would definitely start converting all my old PSX games into eboots and stuff them on my PSP.

    Keep up the good work!

  19. Nitishwar says:

i got a new PSP and updated it to firmware 6.31.i downloaded gta chinatown wars and don’t know how to install it,it is a CSO file…..
    pls help anyone…. 🙁

  20. Andrew says:

@ Nitishwar – Try researching that topic for 10minutes and you will find out. I bought my psp yesterday and updated the firmware to 6.31 also. The solution is to buy Hot Shots Golf and install Half byte loader on your psp. This way you can play HOMEBREWS not CSO’s/ISO’s. Personally I think I will wait for a more stable program as I have heard using Half Byte Loader still has a few bugs.

dude i’m estatic with the progress you have made with HBL, I am of course waiting in hopes of kernel exploits or iso loaders. but not for pirating games.. there are some psp titles that I love and have as UMD’s from my psp 1000 that aren’t yet on psn and i’d like to play them on my GO. I had to sell my psp a while back and got the pspGO as a gift.. thats just how the cookie crumbles!!

hiii,,my psp firmware system is ver 5.03 gen
i’m accidentally ugrade my psp 2006 to ver 6.35
now i can play iso game,,,
have anyone know, how to downgrade back,,,

  30. pocoyo says:

wawa, you can’t downgrade the psp. For all i know, that’s impossible cause the software of a PSP was made to work in this way. even so, i had been investigating and i couldnt find how. But, if you even want to persist and you find (thing that i doubt) publish it on this forum because i know thats a prioroty in the PSP world. HIYAS!

  31. Kev says:

hey guys could tell what I should do (plz tell me exactly coz i get cofused easily) if I have a PSP 3000 and version 6.31?
    thx in advance

  32. ukyo says:

if somethings goes wrong, are there any chance that installing hbl can cause psp 3000 to brick? dont flame im just asking =)

  33. wololo says:

@ukyo: No, HBL can NOT brick your PSP. At worst if something fails the PSP will crash and rebooting it will be enough.

  34. Gully says:

Great work, U are one smart fella.. xD

  35. paul kaiser says:

at last i got to play some very cool homebrews on my psp, many thanks wololo! the first time i got my psp i was really disappointed cause it has a 6.31 firmware but now thanks to you guys i am now able to play homebrew games. more power wololo

  36. chris says:

I feel ridiculous asking but i’ve been searching for nearly 24 hours straight and everyone seems to assume the reader knows something that i don’t know. Is there a comprehensive instruction for how to install this properly and get something running? something with absolute pathnames for where which files and directories go would be perfect, as well as the process for loading the save – the game loads in japanese so i dont know which option is to load the save file, and all i get is my psp shutting off and staying off till i flick the power switch again.

  37. chris says:

sorry forgot to mention this is on OFW 6.35

  38. xFiREx says:

Backup you psp first before doing any of this……

Download HBL (for 6.35 OFW) + Everybody’s Surrki (i think thats how its spelt)

extract all files in a folder on your pc

Cut and paste all the files that are extracted to you psp (of course plug your psp in so the pc recognizes it)

Then on your main screen go to Game/Memory stick

Press “X” on everybody’s sukkuri (it will load)

There are 2 bunch’s of japanese words on the title screen, you select the 2nd one and press “O”.

Then HBL 109 should load for you

    Peace xSoPx xFiREx

  39. drake says:

am pretty new to this. having ofw 6.31 for psp3004.need to hack this somehow. please help

  40. Andy says:

I’m sorry, but none of this works on my PSP. Followed every step, did what it tell em to do, and every time I press X on the HBL logo under Games, I just get a black screen and nothing.
I was all excited to be able to use my PSP for other things… bummer.
