And here's a screenshot of the horizontal hand:

Looks OK, at least for me. Should I redo the GUI design, so that the engine loads a different backdrop when the player chooses that option, wololo?

Re: My battlefield GUI
This is just a note. In regards to the official release I dont know if wololo will or should use it as its so similar to the Planewalkers game even with the minor changes. Its his call, but just figured I would point that out if he is going for the whole package only including original work.

Re: My battlefield GUI
is the white line in the middle necessary? what if the dev team remove the white line?
Re: My battlefield GUI
We haven't decided if we will use this background yet. It definitely looks good, but it causes lots of minor issues that require code changes (mana icons, white line), or things that don't work the way I want (the way the GUI works right now is not entirely the final version, and for example in the near future cards will use as much horizontal space as possible instead of going to the next row).
There's also the issue of plagiarism as mentioned by Nyghtcrawler, and I need to make my mind on that.
Also as kaioshin half-suggested, with such a cool background, we might want more flexibility, and start loading pieces of the background individually so that they can be displayed/hidden at will (such as 2 different backgrounds if the hand is in vertical or horizontal mode).
So, YES, I want to use this, but I need time to make the code work better with it, and I also need to make sure the other devs/designers like the idea

Re: My battlefield GUI
Just throwing a minor tidbit into the discussion: Shandalar (the Microprose game) had context-sensitive backgrounds depicting "fire", "death" etc. themes. I don't remember whether the background was determined by the type of deck that your opponent had, or by the geographical area in which the fight took place. I just wanted to mention that having context-sensitive backgrounds might be a way to include several backgrounds into the game, if we have them. I think the plagiarism problem also becomes much less pronounced if the potentially plagiarized background (I've never seen the Xbox game so I can't assess the severity of the problem) is one out of several that regularly appear.
So, choosing a background according to the most frequent mana symbol in an opponent's deck might be something worth thinking about. Unfortunately, having dedicated special places for mana symbols in a given background complicates that issue a bit ... personally I think that it's better to have the system flexible enough so that we could (in the far future) have dedicated backgrounds for specific game modes, quests, or opponents, if we so desire. Even if that means that we perhaps can't do a great way of displaying mana for one specific background (because the others wouldn't work with it).

Re: My battlefield GUI
Just an idea:

We could give the whole game a graphical overhaul, not just the shop and the battlefield

Re: My battlefield GUI
Nice but I doubt that the font you used is free to use?
Re: My battlefield GUI
dafont.com says free to use...

Anyway, changing the font will be the least difficult thing.
