Final Fantasy VIII - Concept

Post by darkmatter »

I'm in the process of making a FFVIII custom set - hopefully I will balance it with Official Wagic Cards. I've been learning the card creation side to the code, and I hope to give credit to all artists used in the set (prior to a final release I'll email all the creators that are possible.)

However for now, a few just made (Magic Set Editor - of course =P)

And four GFs:

Some concept ideas for cards include Triple Triad based cards, Junction system ("Utilising the GF" could be the highlight of the set, based on coding issues) and of course the classic Magic based cards.

In regard to utilising the GF - I was going to implement this:

"Until the end of turn, all mana used to play Guardian_force spells can be paid for in colourless mana."
This would allow cards such as Ifrit and Leviathan to be played in a multicolour GF deck. However is this card possible in Wagic currently?

I'll be finishing the spoiler today, probably!

First of all, idk were you got your artists from but great job, especially the leviathan looks very well drawn :)

As for the cards just to give you some tips, the GF's can get a little powerboost if you ask me (P/T wise) think if you see what the cards do and what they cost there somewhat overpriced at some point, might want to find a better balance on that. The abilities however (what i've seen so far) are well chosen with each GF (big FF myself eventhough i'm more of a 7 and 9 fan 8 definatly had it's good points :P).

Will give it a test run as soon as your done :).

As for your question, I think the until end of turn everything of a certain card type is colorless is a bit hard but I could be wrong, only thing that comes to my would be something like "auto=Lord(Guardian Forces) Manacost(-black,-white,-blue,-red-green) ueot" but that's pretty much a long shot don't think it'll work to be honest that's kind of still in the works I think but you can always fondle around a bit.
Next to that i don't think it's a usefull idea anyways, need to balance out the manacost/creature abilities/P&T a bit better (for example Alexander is far far far to expensive, 5(W)(W) would be high enough and maybe a P/T of 2/6 instead of 2/5.

And only one correction squall is a SeeD agent, not a seed :P lol nothing to do with plants haha

But thats just my oppinion ofcourse :) hope you got some ideas out of it, looking forward on seeing the rest of the set.

Edit: Oh and as the little logo you could take the a lionheart crest and verctor it, adjust it to the correct size and color those black, silver, gold and red instead of the cube :P the only thing thats not really graphical from this release.

Really excited about your set! I agree with Saint that you'll want to balance costs for the costs and be careful not to make everything unreasonably expensive. If cards cost too much to cast the set is too slow to play. One regret I have from the set I made was making everyone too big in p/t and too expensive. Speed is a huge component to set construction. I love FF8 and can't wait to see more. Don't get me wrong I love the official cards and all, but its in the custom sets where we get to create and its a lot of fun getting to make the cards you want to play. Again awesome work! Looking forward to more! Any questions just post and we'll try to help.

Hehe, very good cardart can make a spoiler start to look really good - I wish I had the talent of some of these people!

I'll show you a few cards that will let GF's be easier to summon, but yeah when the whole set is finished balancing issues can be addressed.
To be honest I feel Squall is a little overpowered, double strike and vigilance for 7 - with a decent commander power, any comments on that?

yeah Alexander is wayy too overcosted haha. 5ww at 2/6 you say? Sounds like a good change.

But yeah, for the GFs you will have this land card:
Image

So with a couple of them in play, Ifrit becomes a single mountain (+ the gardens of course)
Siren would require one more land,
Leviathan would require 3 more and a island,

etc.

I dunno, maybe I could make them more powerful/cheaper (because otherwise they might be stuck in a single GF deck rather than semi splashable.)

Some other cards:

My custom-art doomtrain (thus the worst of the bunch :P)
Image

And an epic Shiva art that I'm going to have to find the source of! (along with a standard Quezacotl)

Looks great, your doomtrain is not the worst btw :P think the Quezacotl and Siren suck more because there ripped from the CGI :P haha but yeah doomtrains not the best but i might be able to get you a cool art pic of doomtrain I saw somewere, don't think they'd care if we ripped it for something like this :P

As for balancing out the cards I've been thinking a bit, if you wait for the next release (or compile the SVN) you can check out the Leveling used in Eldrazi, that would be great for "main characters", just a suggestion ofcourse.

As for the artists, I might want to borrow them for wen i start my FFIX set haha there pretty dang good (I actually come from a family of artists but well if you ask something there's always lack of time **** so it would be nice to borrow some good artists :P).

Been thinking about a Final fantasy storyline wen the Campaign mode is finished (or atleast at a point I see fit enough to start using), it'll be a little mix of the (in my oppinion) best final fantasy games (6,7,8,9 and maybe a little 10 but not to much, went downhill wen it went Square Enix).

But anyways i'm wandering off.

If you need any help with the card coding or need any idea's just send me a PM or something or post it here, the sets 54 cards now I could easially come up with ideas for a 254 cards full set :P.

But for now great job, keep up the good work ^_^

Chocobo Forest - a Classic!

I merged two images for this one - and only could find the source of one (the other was unknown - creepy :P) - Added a token with the same image.

Also what are your thoughts on the set logo - pretty basic but I think it fits!

Leveling WILL be considered - so yeah good idea and one I thought was apt for characters.

Haha, sorry I probably misguided you - I have not gotten personal artists as such - I just aim to credit and ask every single person I use art from - google, deviantart and sherwood are my friends for most of these (with some usually bad editing from myself)

Siren and Quezacotl are temp. - Problem is searching for unique Siren Images is the portrayal of the myth haha

I would 100% be up for helping in a FF storyline - sounds amazing! Any idea when the storyline additions will be ready?

Hehe, 54 in one day isn't too bad an effort - I've only gotten about 3 monsters and a third of the spells - not even all the main characters/GFs are in yet!

Well i'll look out for Siren and Quezacotl art (to be honest Quezacotl will be hard because even squaresoft didn't know what to do with it that's why its a blob like looking bird lol) but i'll see what I can do.

As for the artist well it's better well stolen then badly created yourself lol :P aslong as they don't mind it's all good itsen't it.

The leveling thing really will be a nice thing for your SeeD's, The logo seems simple but does do the trick, only thing is that it matches the Magic logo, there are programs out there (just check downloads.com or something) that let you outline a picture without much trouble it would be cool to use the lionheart lion but maybe I can do something about that for you i'll check (i'm great with photoshop but i suck at illustrating so i'll see what i can do).

The Campaign will be introduced in the next version, but it's not nearly ready, i've had plans for a Final fantasy mod wich we can use here because nobody complains about copyright wen it's fan made but it'll be a prequel to a story I have written for a REAL game Real final fantasy style but ofcourse with different stuff in it, with summons but in a different way blablabla and the real final fantasy style (JRPG) battle system, not the lame thing there trying to use since XII (for wich i'm looking for artists, CGI specialists and programmers, it'll start out as a freebee production but it will be sold after completion and everybody will get his/her share after the first production (i'm sure it'll bring in buckets of cash because you can read any forum and see people begging for real JRPG's with text battles etc.), i've got an entire storyboard written out till the last battle aspect just laying here, i've been working on it since i was about 12 or so and kept improving it until it was a full game and i still add and edit stuff every now and then i just need more artists and CGI'rs (and some more programmers because it's alot of work) but anyways wandering off again lol as soon as the campaign mode is a bit more stable i'll start working on it and ideas and help is always welcome ofcourse :).

As for the cards itself i'd be happy to help, the real FF is a great product and it's just fun to do, got time on my hands and everything you do goes on your curriculum vitae aslong as you bind your name to it lol, so i'm here to help :).

Gotta say 54 cards in a day ain't to bad at all, the more the merrier ofcourse :).

the artwork on these cards are beautiful. doomtrain looks great to me since its already a dark and looming being like diablos.

What template are you using for these cards in MSE?

i don't think abilities where you can manipulate the mana cost are codable yet.

great set.
