Custom – Role Playing Strategy Game - LOTR [Alpha]

Hi everyone! This custom game that I made was inspired by Szei’s original thread. See link here viewtopic.php?f=8&t=839

I have spent more than 1 week conceptualizing the game and making the alpha version. I plan to have 6 races, but for now the Alpha version only contains 1 race – the GONDOR race.

Card ID Range Reservation: 800,000 to 805,000

How to install: (Note this is only applicable to the SVN; not tested on 0.10.1 or later)
1-Put the following files accordingly:
a.Put “NAD” folder into “/res/sets/”
b.Put “Custom_LOTR” folder into “/res/profiles”
c.Put “deck101.txt” file into “/res/ai/baka”

2-Backup your “/res/rules/mtg.txt” file
a.Overwrite your “mtg.txt” w/ my “mtg.txt”
b.My “mtg.txt” will make the life points of each player to 100 and will not draw cards on each turn

3-Once done, choose profile “Custom_LOTR” and play “1 player”
4-Select “Minas Tirith” deck
5-Select the last deck (101) of the AI [just press up to get to the bottom list], then play!
6-You will see 6 similar cards in your hand; In the future, I plan to have you choose 6 races.
7-Play the “Minas Tirith” card ? this will discard your hand and you will not be drawing anymore
8-You will have to build your army now!
9-Don’t mind the AI since it’s a bit clumsy right now, I just want you to experience the gameplay and let me know what you think

10-I have only put 1 hero for now ? “Gandalf”; Try to find a way to summon him; you will struggle at first in summoning all 5 wizards before “Gandalf”; try to create the “white tree” before summoning “gandalf” so that “black auras” will be easier to summon next time. All “wizards” and “black auras” will be destroyed once you summon Gandalf; but you can start summoning wizards again to pump Gandy.

11-You could also try to make your hall to “CITADEL” then to” STRONGHOLD” then try its “ultimate” – “kill all creatures w/ toughness 3 or less”
12-Try also Gandalf’s 3rd ability ? Destroy all Gold

This is only an Alpha version! I plan to have at least 3 heroes for each raise. I have tried to balance the gameplay at the beginning but I have not extended it to mid and late game. It may take sometime to summon Gandalf ? I may have to balance this.

The challenge to have a competitive gameplay w/ the AI is to teach it to choose between its abilities. I have observed that it only chooses the 1st option. It would be great to have the AI think on what option to choose.

Please let me know what you think of this custom game that I made. Bugs, balancing, request, etc.

Looks exciting, downloaded and going to test.
I wish there was a way to switch between the mods (well, if we can call them this yet) without needing to rename/edit files... It can not be done comfortably on PSP alone. Each mod should come with its own separate rules file.

With the growing number of mods, yes, easily switching between them is definitely something we want to do in the near future

OK, played just one game (took almost an hour), here are my thoughts:

- Resource management is awesome. The way it is designed prevents spawning of troops too fast and gives a control of their strength. I also like, that resources are actually permanently spent to summon troops. However, it is often unclear when this will happen - it took me quite a until I figured out when I will lose the black mana source and when only the mana will be spent.
Also, it takes a lot of effort to produce second blue mana (I tried to cheat by producing one black mana and then re-creating the source to be able to tap it again, but the first mana got spent on its creation :) ).

- I like the upgradeable main building. It's ultimate ability is quite cruel, maybe even too powerful. Do you plan on adding weapon and armor upgrades similar to those in Szei's mod?

- It took me another while to figure out what '*' means.

- The biggest issue I have with this is the fact that you removed the deck creation from the game. It's very important aspect of MTG - it gives you opportunity to customize your experience and to try different strategies. I fear that no matter how much time you'll spend with balancing, without deck building there will be single optimal path of playing each race, which will make all games too similar (that could be the case with deck building too, but would last much longer anyway). In regular strategy games, the variety comes from the need to cope with different setting each time the game is played, but we don't have the options to create different starting conditions in wagic yet. One kind of variety could come from certain units being more powerful against certain classes of enemies (e.g. archers vs flying creatures) and each race having different strengths.

thanks for your feedback! I'll try to take note of all your observations and inputs and will try to consider it in the next upgrade. :D

This looks great. I can't wait to see the other races. I haven't had time to look in detail so I can't give you any specific feedback but it looks promising.

Thanks! Looking forward also to your next update on your custom game :D

I plan to do Gondor, Rohan and Elven races for the free people. And Mordor, Isengard and Moria races for the minions.

I will have Gondor and Mordor for the next update with a more balance gameplay and probably a better AI.

Please help me. Is there a way to summon a token to your hand instead of going to the battlefield?
