PS Vita: VitaQuakeIII 1.3 released, brings significant performance boost
Developer Rinnegatamante has released version 1.3 of VitaQuakeIII (Quake 3 port on the PS Vita). This new release bring a huge performance boost, thanks to a significant improvement in the underlying library vitaGL. This improvement will most likely bring speed upgrades to most 3D homebrew games and ports on the platform, down the line.
What’s new in Vita Quake 3 ?
Rinnegatamante has discovered and fixed a substantial bottleneck in VitaGL (OpenGL wrapper for PS Vita). The developer says:
Looks like while profiling OpenMoHAA I discovered a pretty considerable bottleneck in vitaGL pipeline whenever a vbo is not used. This affects quite a good number of old releases as well so, expect perf boost releases in the next weeks.
He showcased a comparison screenshot, indicating that in some cases, VitaQuakeIII goes from 24 to 32 FPS, a 30% speed improvement!
The bug was located in the way some vertices were handled by the library (with the fix being this one, I suppose). Not all games using VitaGL will see an improvement with this change, but those using VBOs could benefit.
Changelog (v.1.3):
- Updated to latest vitaGL usage.
- Greatly improved performances thanks to circular vertex pool usage in vitaGL.
