PS5 Release: Saturn2PS5 – Play any Saturn games on PS5 4.03/4.50
Scene developer Markus95 has released Saturn2PS5, an update of his Saturn2PS4 script, optimized for PS5. Originally, Saturn2PS4 was supposed to work for PS5 as well, but the developer has received reports of crashes on the PS5. He has adapted his script to improve PS5 compatibility.
How does Sega Saturn emulation on PS5 work, and what is Saturn2PS5?
Sega Saturn emulation works on PS4/PS5 by hijacking existing Saturn games on the console. Cotton Guardian Force Saturn Tribute is a Saturn game that was released on PS4, and the scene quickly figured out that it shipped with a Saturn emulator. It became “easy” to inject different Saturn games into the emulator, to enjoy Saturn emulation on the PS4, and, consequently, on the PS5 as well via PS4 compatibility.
Other games that can be used as “containers” include Cotton2 and Cotton Boomerang.
Saturn2PS5 is a simple batch script for windows that will take the Saturn game of your choice, inject it into one of the 3 aforementioned games’ pkg file, to create a “new” PKG file with your game in it, ready to install on the PS5.
The emulator embedded in these games is allegedly based on SSF, but has its own limitations. Specifically, which game you choose as the container will have an impact on compatibility, Markus95 warns:
- Guardian Force will generate a package that might occasionally have sound issues
- Cotton 2 also works but some games might lead to a black screen (in which case, try to regenerate the fpkg with a different Cotton game as the container)
- Cotton Boomerang has overall better compatibility but the bottom of the screen might be cut in some cases

In parallel, the developer has been working on a script to launch PS2 games on hacked PS5s. No ETA on a release for this script at the moment.
As a reminder, you will need a hacked PS5 in order to install the FPKG files obtained through this script.

* Technically what’s been backported are games themselves such as Cotton Guardian Force. Once those are backported, there’s “nothing” to change to existing scripts that inject other Saturn games into the emulator
