PS5 Hacks: CP (Communication Processor) Box firmware Dumped + more details shared
PlayStation scene veteran Zecoxao shared actual firmware dumps of the mysterious CP device today (Download link below), but mentioned that its encryption/decryption keys haven’t been found yet.
PS5 CP Box – what is it?
Zecoxao mentioned last week ongoing work to reverse engineer the firmware of the CP Box, a PS5 accessory for official developers that might or might not be dedicated to Network QA. There was hope that this box could contain encryption/decryption keys. It’s unclear if anything within this device could be useful to understand the PS5 itself, but that won’t prevent hackers from trying.
He also states that the main firmware is protected by PS4 Southbridge chip, confirming the CP Box ships with similar components as the PS4 for some of its security.

Not much is known about the Mysterious PS5 CP Box, but here’s some details from the PS5 Dev Wiki. It appears that box is somewhat critical for PS5 Test Kits to work properly.
TEST KIT need CP Box connected "before Power ON" NO CP BOX , debug setup setting will auto switch to > "Release mode" with CP BOX , debug setup setting can switch to > "Assist Mode" PS5 SYSTEM ON can not hot plug CP BOX , it will show up error message PS5 in Assist Mode will save in memory ( even no power ) , but power on time will check CPBOX again CP BOX can check PS5 info (serial , Assist mode/Release Mode) even PS5 system is shut down

Beside the Firmware dumps posted today, it seems that whoever’s been working on this device is doing some pretty low level analysis of the hardware and/or communication protocol of the box, considering Zecoxao’s latest shared screenshot:

Does it have video out? HDMI?
What does it do to the PS5 it it connects to it?
Is this even relevant?
Might be a useless box for the ps5 dev console and nothing more? Maybe a sortof dev router?
So its got a screen on it. Does that change at all? Connect a network cable and internet, what happens?
Does it phone home?
There are so many more questions we will never know the answers too. For me the end user its a nothing box. We will never have one and never need one. But for the hackers it might be something it might be nothing. How did the hacker get it? Is it really worth all the work to find out what it does?
