Sony increases the price of PS5
In a not surprising , but possibly unprecedented (can someone confirm?*) move, Sony have decided to increase the price of the PS5 significantly, in all markets except the US.
Citing inflation and “global economic environment”, SIE CEO Jim Ryan announced the price hike today on PlayStation’s blog, with the following changes, effective immediately unless specified otherwise.
- Europe
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – €549.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – €449.99
- UK
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – £479.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – £389.99
- Japan (effective Sept. 15, 2022)
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥60,478 yen (including tax)
- PS5 Digital Edition – ¥49,478 yen (including tax)
- China
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – ¥4,299 yuan
- PS5 Digital Edition – ¥3,499 yuan
- Australia
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $799.95
- PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $649.95
- Mexico
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – MXN $14,999
- PS5 Digital Edition – MXN $12,499
- Canada
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – CAD $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition – CAD $519.99
It’s worth noting that the price increase doesn’t impact the US, possibly because of the current US dollar’s strength relative to the Japanese Yen. That, or Sony don’t want to anger their most important market.
These numbers represent increases of 10 percent in Europe, 21 percent in Japan (!!!), 6 percent in the UK, 7 percent in Australia, and a more reasonable 3 in Canada (where people can typically buy in the US if it’s cheaper there anyway…)
The fact that the price hike in Japan will “only” happen in a few weeks doesn’t seem relevant to me: it’s not like you can find a PS5 at retail price anywhere, now or in the next few weeks (well, Amazon Japan actually have some through their invitation mechanism, but the price is already higher than MSRP. For US residents, Amazon also has a similar invitation mechanism).

* I could find one reference of PS4/PS3 price increases in a single country, Chile, due to the economic conditions of that specific country back in 2014.

Yeah but look, € went down in value so much that it is an obvioul move, 1€ used to be worth 1.3$ but right now $ has slightly higher value than €.
Blame current politics not sony
Meta/Facebook hugely increased their Oculus Quest 2 prices recently despite it launching some time ago, so maybe they have started a new trend.

In what way does that even matter anymore. Sony is a US based company ever since they packed and move to California and closed their japanese studio.
Good point. I assumed they were still partially designed/manufactured in Japan but that seems to have changed
Mine was made in south korea
Sony is a Japanese Company with offices in 13 countries including the US. SEI or Sony Entertainment Inc. has offices in California, but is a wholly owned subsidery company under the parent company with its workd headquarters in Japan.
lol
It’s funny how that happens right after sony is going through a lawsuit in Europe about over charging on PSN purchases
It’s the same 30% industry standard. Doesn’t seem like it has legs unless they have another angle to try.
Absolute ***. Money grabbing vunts
Jim Ryan need to be fired.

The price of the PS4 went up in Canada in the past as well. They increased it by $50.
well, time to wait for ps6
I recall the PS4 launching in Canada at $399 CAD and increasing to $450 cad a few months later.
Or it was 450 to 500? Something like that, but it was a $50 price increase due to the value of the Canadian dollar lowering. This was the same time Video games started retailing from $60 cad to 65, and then 70,and then 80.
Today new PS5 games retail for $90 cad before tax, making them a $100 purchase tax-in. Kinda crazy how cheap they used to be.
