Switch Emulation: Cutscenes now work in Yuzu thanks to NVDEC emulation – no need to skip them any more!
When it comes to emulation, attention is first directed towards making games playable but this generally results in less important aspects being put off to a later date. One of these aspects is cutscene support and now, the yuzu emulator, which allows you to play Switch games on PC, has officially implemented it!
Cutscenes now work in Yuzu thanks to NVDEC emulation!
Black cutscenes are a thing of the past (for the most part) thanks to the newly-introduced NVDEC support!
If you ever used Yuzu, then you’ll know that video cutscenes didn’t work with a black screen with audio being presented rather than the cutscene in all its glory. As a result, one ends up skipping them either by pressing a button on the controller or by using a pre-existing save file when the former isn’t possible but now, you can enjoy cutscenes in Switch games thanks to the implementation of NVDEC support!
For the uninitiated, NVDEC is an acronym for “Nvidia Video Decoder” which is a feature in Nvidia’s GPUs allowing video decoding to be offloaded to them rather than the CPU. As this wasn’t emulated in Yuzu, black cutscenes ensued but thanks to work by epicboy & others, H264 & VP9-codec cutscenes now display properly on Yuzu in most games with some titles presenting additional challenges making life more difficult. Other codecs like VP8 & H265, which Nintendo allows developers to use in cutscene videos, aren’t currently supported in Yuzu as no games make use of them meaning there’s nothing to test them with.
Current status of cutscenes in Switch games
As per test results published by the Yuzu team, there are 58 games in which video cutscenes work properly for the most part with these including:
- Paper Mario: The Origami King
You can now enjoy cutscenes in a platheora of games including Kirby All Stars! (video)
- Okami HD
- Kirby Start Allies
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Just Dance 2020
- Disgaea 5 Complete
- Resident Evil
- Super Mario Odyessey
- Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Super Mario 3D All-Stars and various others
A few other titles are a bit more finicky to get working with these including Zelda: Link’s Awakening, Pokemon Let’s Go & Pokemon Sword although the Yuzu team is actively working on making cutscenes work within these.
Conclusion
As things stand, video cutscene (NVDEC) support is only implemented within the latest Yuzu Early Access builds that require one to donate $5/monthly for access. This newly-added feature will eventually end up in publicly available ‘main’ branch releases as usual. You may also read more about how NVDEC support came to be by checking out Yuzu’s post below!
