PSVita Release: Xerpi releases udcd_uvc 1.7 with support for streaming the Vita’s screen to macOS & Android!
For reasons only known to Sony, they decided to make the PSVita a handheld only console despite the PSP supporting gaming on the TV through an official AV cable. However, Xerpi went ahead and created udcd_uvc to alleviate this shortcoming which lets you stream the console’s screen to PC with Mac & Android support being added in the most recent update!
What is udcd_uvc?
As the introduction suggests, udcd_uvc is a plugin for the PlayStation Vita which allows you to stream its screen via USB to your computer and now, smartphone. This effectively makes the PSVita a hybrid console that allows for gaming in both handheld mode and on a bigger screen which is undoubtedly attractive to various users. Performance-wise, the plugin provides a pretty good experience promising a full 60FPS even at 960×544 after improvements by its developer xerpi that shipped with version 1.5. That being said, your mileage may vary depending on the USB port (2.0 vs 3.0), computer and possibly even USB cable that you use.
To use the plugin, one needs to physically connect their console via USB and use software such as PotPlayer or OBS in order to view the NV12 stream being outputted by the PSVita. Sound is not transmitted and should be captured through the headphone jack or wireless means.
What does udcd_uvc 1.7 bring along?
udcd_uvc 1.7, which was released earlier this week, is quite a significant update as it increases the range of devices that the plugin can be used with – its changelog states that:
- Support for both macOS & Android has been added as the UVC payload size is now 12 bytes
- This fix was devised thanks to help by @xfangfang
- From my testing, I was able to get around a ~45FPS stream @ 960×544 using a USB 2.0 port on macOS 10.13.6 with OBS 25.0.8
- No recommendation has been given on the best player to use on Android as both PotPlayer and OBS are unavailable for the platform
- The initial delay is now 15 seconds which increases the chances of the plugin still working even if numerous other plugins are loaded
