Switch News: Ryujinx emulator implements “Local Wireless” Multiplayer support over internet – Switch games that support local multiplayer can be played across different PCs!
While the vast majority of emulators allow for easy couch co-op by letting one connect multiple controllers to their computer, things start getting spotty when players aren’t next to each other. An option is to use remote desktop solutions to play emulated games together although this doesn’t always work too well but now, the folks over at Ryujinx have implemented local wireless compatibility in their emulator which will revolutionise multiplayer Switch gaming on PC!
Ryujinx gets support for Local Wireless Multiplayer Over Internet
With Ryujinx’s LDN service allowing for local wireless over the internet, you can blow up your friends in Super Bomberman R for the Switch on PC!
For those who are out of the loop, Ryujinx is a Nintendo Switch emulator for PC that has ever-increasing game compatibility and sees pretty active development with it being the first to achieve certain stuff such as 32-bit Switch game support allowing Wii U ports like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to be emulated on PC. Now, the Ryujinx team is back again with yet another first and this time, it’s support for Local Multiplayer games – these are games, such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, that allow people in close proximity to each other to play together using separate Switch consoles hence the word ‘local’.
In Ryujinx’s implementation, local multiplayer works a bit differently than on the actual Switch console since it doesn’t require players to be in close proximity to each other. This is because it works over the internet by connecting to a server hosted by the Ryujinx folks (ldn.ryujinx.org) which acts as one large ‘local’ wireless multiplayer room but private games can be hosted by using a passphrase which is entered within the emulator’s settings.
If this sounds cool and you have a capable PC, more information is provided in the Conclusion on how to try it out!
Which games are supported?
Fancy visiting your friend’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons island on PC? Well, now you can with Ryujinx’s local multiplayer support!
As local multiplayer support in Ryujinx is still in its infancy, only 4 games are confirmed to be working properly and these include:
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Splatoon 2
- Super Bomberman R
- Puyo Puyo Tetris
There are also other titles that work with this feature but have some issues such as Mario Kart 8 desyncing due to FPS differences which can lead to disconnection. Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate also works but requires an existing save.
