With information about the PlayStation 5 slowly trickling out as the Holiday 2020 season comes closer, Sony has shed some light on how PlayStation 4 peripherals will work with their upcoming console. In this article, we’ll be looking at what Sony has revealed together with the unfortunate revelation that DualShock 4 support will be limited.

PlayStation 4 peripherals & the PlayStation 5

If you invested a good deal of money into genre-specific PlayStation 4 peripherals, then you’ll be pleased to hear they’ll also be compatible with the PS5! (RWA Racing Wheel Apex shown in picture)

Yesterday, Sony published a post on the PlayStation Blog (below) outlining how PlayStation 4 peripherals will play with the upcoming PlayStation 5. In this post, Sony confirmed that the following peripherals will work just fine with their new console:

• Licensed racing wheels, flight sticks and arcade sticks will work just fine on both PlayStation 5 and compatible PlayStation 4 games
• Headsets connected through a USB port or the 3.5mm audio jack on controllers are supported on the PlayStation 5 together with the Gold & Platinum Wireless Headsets
• The PS Move Motion Controllers & PlayStation VR Aim Controller will also work just fine
• The PlayStation Camera is also supported but it requires an adapter that Sony will be providing for free
  • More information on how to actually obtain this adapter will be shared at a later date

While this covers a good deal of peripherals that many will undoubtedly be pleased to carry over to the next console generation, support for the hugely popular DualShock 4 controller and other official PlayStation 4 controllers like will be limited.

DualShock 4 & other PS4 controllers will only be supported in compatible PlayStation 4 titles

Unfortunately, the DualShock 4 will not be fully supported on the PlayStation 5 as it’s confined to compatible PS4 games only!

As mentioned above, DualShock 4 support will be limited meaning that it can only be used in PlayStation 4 titles compatible with the PS5 even though we don’t know which games will make the cut. For a reason, Sony went ahead with a pretty simple one with them stating “PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller” – according to previous announcements, these new capabilities include haptic feedback, adaptive triggers and a microphone. Not allowing the DualShock 4 to be used in PlayStation 5 games might be a way to entice developers to make use of the aforementioned features offered by the DualSense controller and avoid coding for the lowest common denominator.

That being said, it would have been rather nice to at least allow developers to implement support for PlayStation 4 controllers, especially if they opt not to use the DualSense’s new features, seeing how the PlayStation 5’s software already supports them!

Conclusion

Sony’s move not to fully support the DualShock 4 contrasts with Microsoft’s decision to support Xbox One controllers on the Xbox Series X and various PlayStation fans are already taking to social media to show  their frustration. After all, official controllers generally cost $50-60 a pop and it is pretty annoying not being able to use controllers that you already have lying around especially seeing how the PlayStation 5 already supports them in a way!
