With the PlayStation 4 finally getting a jailbreak for a firmware above FW 5.05 after 2 years, its community woke up from a partial slumber with various releases, updates, guides and personal experiences relating to FW 6.72 which sleirsgoevy has released a jailbreak for and is still updating to improve stability! However, there’s also a lighter side to the PlayStation 4 community having to do with memes and humour which we’ll be looking at in this somewhat unusual article.

Sleirsgoevy releases his FW 6.72 jailbreak

When TheFlow released a kernel exploit affecting up to FW 7.02 on the 7th of July 2020, excitement within the PlayStation 4 community skyrocketed as it meant that more people could soon jailbreak their console not to mention the ability to play hundreds more titles that required a firmware higher than FW 5.05. However, TheFlow’s release was only an exploit and it required a developer to create a fully-fledged jailbreak utilising pre-existing userland exploits available for FWs up to FW 6.72 which meant a little more waiting. To this end, SpecterDev started working on a jailbreak himself but then, on the 17th of July after just 10 days from TheFlow’s exploit release, sleirsgoevy released a jailbreak out of the blue which took the PlayStation 4 community by surprise. As a result of this, ‘MouseyMan7’ took to Reddit to create a meme showing what PlayStation 4 community members truly cared about when sleirsgoevy rebooted the scene!

The FW 6.72’s jailbreak low success rate

After sleirsgoevy released his FW 6.72 jailbreak which put the PS4 scene on fire, reports of its relatively low success rate for some started making their rounds online. As a result, some including Al Azif recommended staying on FW 5.05 for the time being with various others on Reddit & Twitter reporting the trouble they had with running the jailbreak with multiple reboots and freezes. Seeing this, Reddit user ‘FraMaras’ went ahead and posted a nice meme on r/ps4homebrew showing how empowered people that managed to get the FW 6.72 jailbreak running the first time. Since then, stability has been gradually improving with sleirsgoevy performing various updates to his jailbreak so perhaps the stability issues will become a thing of the past!

With the reported success rate of the PS4 jailbreak initially being around 10-20%, getting the exploit to run the first time required quite a bit of luck! (Source)

Backporting games to FW 5.05

Without a doubt, one of the biggest annoyances that those who jailbreak any modern console face at some point in time is that of not being able to play games intended for a higher firmware than they’re currently on. However, on the PlayStation 4, community members have devised a way to backport dumped games intended for FW 5.50-6.72 down to FW 5.05 thus allowing those who decided to hold off updating for now to play a lot more titles including RDR 2, Battlefield V, Spider-Man and lots more! To poke fun at the fact that most FW 5.05-6.72 games work just fine on FW 5.05, ‘MouseMan7’ struck again on Reddit with a meme joking about Sony’s insistence on updating your console’s firmware to play new games. Perhaps some day, we’ll see someone trying to run newer games on FW 1.76 which was a golden FW for the PS4 for some time since downporting is pretty easy thanks to numerous tools!
