Switch: Nintendo releases FW 10.1.0 & Atmosphere 0.13.0 is still works – SwitchBrew Wiki states that some security flaws were fixed!
Ever since April, Nintendo has been churning out minor updates in order to make the Switch’s firmware extra-stable and now, we have yet another firmware in the 10.x series. This time around, it’s Firmware 10.1.0 and thankfully, it doesn’t break the Atmosphere CFW!
Nintendo releases Switch FW 10.1.0
If your Switch is connected to WiFi and you use it daily, you probably already got a prompt telling you to update your Switch to the latest and greatest FW 10.1.0. As you might expect, FW 10.1.0 is simply a minor update like all x.1.z releases for the Switch and this is backed by its change log which simply reads “General system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.”. However, the folks over at the SwitchBrew wiki perform more in-depth analysis of firmware updates and apparently, this update brings quite a few under the hood changes with various sysmodules being updated including settings, hid, friends, wlan and many others.
Other than listing the stuff that’s been updated, the SwitchBrew analysis also comes with a line reading “Security flaws fixed: YES” meaning that FW 10.1.0 does indeed fix some security issues although no information has been provided on their significance to the hacking community. While this may sound quite concerning, it’s important to state that fusee-gelee vulnerable Switch console owners needn’t worry as the vulnerability allowing them to hack the console is hardware-backed and it is unlikely to affect those using SX Lite/Core need to worry as these exploit the system from a hardware level.
SciresM confirms that Atmosphere 0.13.0 works with FW 10.1.0
As FW 10.1.0 doesn’t bring an awful lot to the table, SciresM tweeted that Atmosphere 0.13.0 still functions properly on it as the TrustZone, Bootloader and Kernel haven’t changed with the Loader receiving a minor non-breaking change. In the same tweet, he also notes that Atmosphere 0.14.0 will be released sometime this week and it should reflect the Loader changes introduced by this new firmware update which were revealed to be anti-downgrade lists. Switching focus over to SX OS, community members are reporting that the latest version of SX OS DOES NOT fully support FW 10.1.0 as there are issues with launching & installing games so it’s advised to stay on FW 10.0.4 for the time being.
Conclusion
As mentioned above, FW 10.1.0 fixes some security flaws so if you’re not using your Switch much, it may be a good idea not to update for the time being although there’s no confirmation on whether the flaws fixed are significant but staying on a low FW is always a good idea for those wanting hacks. Furthermore, if you’re using SX OS, you should hold off updating for now!
