N64 Emulation: MasterFeizz releases ARMv6 dynarec version of DaedalusX64 for the 3DS & ports it to the Vita version – Mario Kart 64 & Super Mario 64 are now effectively playable on both the Vita and New 3DS
UPDATE: First Official DaedalusX64 Alpha Release for the PSVita now available: Wololo /talk Thread
For years, various PSVita scene members have wanted to play Nintendo 64 games on their console and now, that’s finally become a reality thanks to MasterFeizz’s ARMv6 DaedalusX64 dynarec and Rinnegatamante’s porting efforts in getting DaedalusX64 on the console. In this article, we’re going to look at what’s been released together with taking a look at compatibility.
MasterFeizz releases basic dynarec for DaedalusX64 on the 3DS together with porting it to the PSVita
Over the last 3 weeks, a good deal of progress was made in porting DeadalusX64 to the PlayStation Vita & New Nintendo 3DS with quite a few titles including the highly popular Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 being rendered pretty well. However, performance was a sticking point because while some games were rendering well, they were still unplayable as a dynamic recompiler (dynarec) needed to be written for the emulator but thankfully, MasterFeizz took on the task of creating an ARMv6 dynarec for the 3DS which could be easily ported to the PSVita.
Now, MasterFeizz has released a basic dynamic recompiler for the Nintendo 3DS build of DaedalusX64 which managed to make some Nintendo 64 games playable on the New Nintendo 3DS according to user reports which are detailed below. Furthermore, MasterFeizz also managed to port his ARMv6 dynamic recompiler for the 3DS to the PlayStation Vita, which has an ARMv7 CPU, presumably with Rinnegatamante’s assistance. As of right now, there’s no official release of DaedalusX64 with JIT for the Vita but an unofficial VPK compiled with commits up to those of 14.5 hours ago (which include the dynarec) is available.
How is performance? Which games are playable?
From some testing on my own PSVita, I can personally confirm that Mario Kart 64 provides a playable experience in ‘Luigi Raceway’ and with a 494MHz overclock, the frame rate hovered at around the 25FPS mark which is what the European (PAL) version runs at by default. Rinnegatamante also performed some testing with other games on the PlayStation Vita in a video which can be viewed below – this demonstrates performance in Super Mario 64 and various other titles.
On the New Nintendo 3DS front, the following games exhibit playable performance as per a beefy compatibility list by Reddit user ‘CoolFiverIsABabe’:
- Gex: Enter The Gecko
- Diddy Kong Racing
- It comes with graphical issues like water not being rendered correctly but it’s still playable
- F-Zero X
- Rampage World Tour
- Gex 3 Deep Cover Gecko
- Mario Kart 64
- Paper Mario is close to Playable
@divsluck has also demonstrated Super Mario 64 running pretty well on their New Nintendo 3DS.
You may grab the Nintendo 3DS port of DaedalusX64 with MasterFeizz’s dynarec from the GitHub link below. The unofficial DeadealusX64 VPK provided compiled by ‘Bythos’ for the Vita may also be downloaded from the links below – Rinnegatamante is currently planning to release an Alpha version for the Vita.
On a concluding note, a compatibility list for DaedalusX64 on the PSVita is currently in the works which shall contain what you can and can’t play in one centralised location!
