RPCS3 February 2018 progress report in a nutshell – Renderer improvements, new GUI theme, compatibility fixes for many games including Ratchet and Clank and Silent Hill: Downpour
Thanks to the dedicated and talented folks over at RPCS3, the emulator is always doing a great amount of progress each month. This article is here to condense down their February 2018 report into a shorter read!
Core improvements and even better compatibility
During the month of February, RPCS3 saw a good amount of renderer improvements thanks to kd-11’s work with the RSX unit. Thanks to these improvements, many games are now rendered properly as render flickering problems in some games were fixed and other games had their more subtle effects such as lens flares fixed. Ratchet and Clank, Cars 3 and Journey were somewhat improved this month in the rendering department.
Staying on the subject of the codebase, it’s also worth mentioning that the small PSVita emulation portion that was in the main code branch was removed due to Vita3K. This means that Vita emulation won’t be tackled by the RPCS3 team for a long while if ever
After this month, only 34 games don’t do anything when loaded so this means that only a little over 1% of the PS3’s game library are totally unbootable! February also saw sizeable increases in the number of games getting ingame but not being fully playable just yet.
New theme and other code improvements
Thanks to AniLeo, RPCS3 has a new GUI theme that can be used with the emulator. The theme is based upon NieR Automata and will make the GUI look less bland!

The new theme looks great, especially if you’re not a big fan of default system dialgoues that you see all the time!
Other code improvements include newly emulated firmware modules that increase the amount of working games and decrease the amount of games that crash shortly after starting them.
Games that got noticeable improvements this month
Of course, the main point of further development on RPCS3 is to make more games playable. This month saw sizeable improvements to:
- Ratchet and Clank games
- Silent Hill: Downpour
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2
- Journey – Still too slow to be playable but a brave soul managed to finish it inside the emulator
- Thexder Neo
- Godzilla – Still not fully playable
- Many more
