CTR-V for 3DS released, wireless capture of footage on your n3DS
If there’s something I’d love to be able to do with my o3DS, it would definitely be the streaming of my games to somewhere else when I’m at home. Lucky for you n3DS users, developer ShinyMK seems to have you covered. CTR-V (or CTR-Viewer) is a computer-based tool that wirelessly connects to your 3DS and streams it to your OS of choice. Yes you read correctly, CTR-V supports all major operating systems on the market!
CTR-V is based on the code for both NTRClient and NitroStream. However as the developer for this application points out, while it is similar to NitroStream, it both brings in and changes concepts already introduced to make a better streaming/recording experience for n3DS systems using bootNTR. But rather than talk about it, let’s just get to how it works!
What is CTR-V?
CTR-V is a computer-based tool developed by GBATemp user ShinyMK. It is a streaming client that you can use to stream your 3DS’ gameplay on a computer of your choice. It only works on n3DS models using bootNTR.
Features
It’s a single .exe file, No .dll or config files needed, Not even NTRViewer itself. Just CTR-V is needed. All required NTRViewer .dll files are embed into CTR-V. New Custom UI – Completely different. No config files are needed, all setting data is stored in the EXE. Its no longer WPF, Its now a Windows Forms Application. Connection/Load Speed is noticeably faster and easier. (CTR-V: Roughly 2 seconds, NitroStream: Roughly 8-10 seconds). The best settings to use are set by default. (For Good Connections) It no longer double connects (You can see NitroStream double connecting from the log). When playing Sun/Moon it no longer freezes when loading the save or going online/offline. It doesn’t show the Console Log window which isn’t needed for the average user.
Changelog for v1.2.1
- Reverted back to the old official NTRViewer build release (3.4PREVIEW2)
- Found a way to hide the console window without needing to re-build NTRViewer
- Added setting to show the Console Window if you need it for showing the FPS on OBS
- Fixed some other bugs people let me know about
- Extremely Buggy Fullscreen Mode removed (Sorry D: – Its not compatible with the OFFICIAL NTRViewer release)

To download CTR-V all you have to do is head over to the release thread over at GBATemp or ShinyMK‘s GitHub release page. This last one however only hosts the Windows version so if you want Mac or Linux, drop by the release thread. It also features a FAQ which should help you troubleshoot any issues and an additional tutorial to get Pokemon Sun/Moon streaming working.
I was excited until n3DS exclusivity. Are devs dropping support for o3DS? This tool would be great on every system to destroy that dumb capture card monopoly.
I’m just gonna guess here, but the N3DS does have stronger hardware available, which might be necessary to stream the video of the game while keeping the game performance intact. I’m assuming it wouldn’t work as well for N3DS enabled titles.
No, but sadly most games fill the ram on the o3DS to the point that there isnt enough to let a recording run in the background. The n3DS has mire ram, which is why it works on there
Ithe O3DS doesn’t have the extra CPU time nor memory required to handle the video encoding needed for this. It’s a hardware limitation.
The New 3ds has a much better wifi chip. That probably goes along with the more powerful hardware in explaining this exclusivity.
@Franky: I second that “destroying” of ridiculously expensive capture-cards monopoly. Would love to see it ported somehow to my Vita!
About the n3DS “exclusivity”, I’m sure it’s because it has a bit of more processing power than o3DS, which is needed for the streaming process.
Waiting for something similar for vita
I am very interested in this considering recently I worked security for play Nintendo at the South Shore Plaza and I saw Nintendo hook up the New 3ds to a big screen for live gameplay of Smash Bros 3ds!!!
