Emulators on PS Vita – Retroarch adds gPSP, Nestopia, prBoom support
The Vita scene has been on fire since the recent release of the HENkaku exploit for firmware 3.60. In particular, Retroarch, which provides emulators for a variety of consoles and systems, has been ported to the Vita and brings lots of emulators to the PS Vita (33 cores supported in the latest build, from the Atari 2600 to the Nintendo DS).
The latest nightly build brings gPSP (Game Boy Advance emulator), Nestopia, and prBoom (Doom emulator) support. prBoom was already included in nightly builds a while ago, but is now actually working. The Dev team mentions that to get prBoom to work, you’ll want to get prBoom.wad and copy it in the same folder as your DOOM.WAD file.
gPSP already supports several games at full speed. For gPSP to work, you’ll need a GBA bios (we don’t provide such files here) that you’ll need to copy in ux0:/data/retroarch/cores/system on your PS Vita..
It’s still very early for Homebrew on the PS Vita but it’s amazing to see progress being made as such speed.

PS TV is back from the dead!
The Retroarch emulators on the PS Vita, as well as the recently announced Moonlight PS Vita port (to stream video games from a PC to your PS Vita) are turning the discontinued PS TV into a very attracting option as a gaming set top box for your living room (especially for $29.99).

hows this go for N64? or cant it do that
N64 Emulation is either never happening, or wayyyyyyy far off into the future.
Without OpenGL, at least, something probably needs to be built from the ground up. Not sure if anyone will want to do that, seeing as N64 is already a pain to emulate and still not perfect on PC even.
Actually, I can see you’ve read the forum post about porting mupen64 and it using opengl (The only thing emulators and opengl have in common is that the emulator is built upon opengl to ‘translate’ code and emulate certain features of teh n64. You can do this in nearly any programming language without using opengl, heck, i’m sure someone has even written fully fledged emulators in a simple language such as python) . Emulating it is not as hard as it seems, the real question is, is there someone who has the time and is willing to put in the effort to do this? I probably would, if I didn’t have to work 6 days a week 10 hours a day and keep up with my own life. The n64 has got little to no attention from the majority nowadays therefore no one is putting in the effort to emulate it properly.
Hope somebody will give time in psp and ps1 emulator…
too expensive for buying new games (3rd world problems)
it’s ok thru vhbl with henkaku.
the sound is a little fast. and some games stutter(batman beyond)
but others like super mario 64 are pretty ok(I will be testing smash tonight)
sadly thats only on my ps vita.
on my tv ever after the anti blacklist install/rebuild. I couldn’t launch talkman (but not before turning it into a vhbl bubble lol) but no launch so ima have to try another psp game tomorrow.
why doesn’t desume boot on the ps tv though??
i have question when we have a roms ps vita hack on vita
There is a threat on gbatemp and comits on github for a ps vita n64 emulater so to you all hater, check mate!
install vhbl, there is a n64 emulator for that, it runs at 30-60 fps (tested with super mario 64)
How viable is the NDS emu in this?
It will be viTable maybe a month from now
Still waiting for psp and ps1 emu
PS TV is back from the dead!
I laughed when i read this. Yes the PSTV has turned into a great gaming set top box. I am glad i purchased two of them a few months ago when they were laid to rest by Sony and on clearance. The PSTV has turned out to be used as much or more than my vita lately. HENkaku and the wonderful developers who bring us these programs and emulators have made it a joy owning a Vita and PSTV. Thank you to all. and every day its getting better.
I’ve actually got other ideas for the PS TV.
Since it is a display-less/stationary console, I am wondering what mods could be made?
Once more of the Vita OS is understood, more hacks made available… more things can be accomplished.
@Wololo – What would you say to opening up the PS TV, and overclocking? It’s a stand alone set top, so you could add a heatsink and fan.
60+ fps in games? Maybe. Could cause instabilities, but we wont know until it happens. Surely it would work wonders for emulators and homebrew.
Ever since the PS TV came out, I have always pondered on the ability to take it apart and mod it. Mostly for the above mentioned ability.
What do you say guys? Want to see some system mods that will allow us to play with the deeper operations of the Vita OS?
I know I am interested. LETS GET CRACK’N 😀 😛
“It’s still pretty early for the Vita homebrew scene.”
You and I both know that that is a blatant lie, Wololo. The vita scene is receding back into mediocrity, with only a few good gents temporarily keeping it afloat. I predict that if there is no piracy in the next few months that the Vita scene will slide back into the depths of obscurity. Which is EXTREMELY unfortunate, as some of these homebrews are promising.
how is it a lie? Henkaku is the thing that basically started it all, yeah we had that rejuv thing back then but that wasnt nearly as user friendly/easy to work with. when rejuv came out there were still a bunch of limitations on what we could do, but henkaku basically ripped the vita open as far as possibilities go.. also Homebrew =\= Piracy, do you really want to paint that large of a target on the scene’s back after everything we’ve achieved in the last two weeks? no thaaaanks
Anyone with the ps tv achieved to hack it?Im trying but it seems impossible
What are you referring to when you say hack it? if you mean run HENkaku, it already does everything that can be done with the vita. and works great! very easy to do.
visit reddit/r/vitahacks and you will see or the forums here at wololo.
yes, i have been trying to install henkaku but it fails all the time
You need to have a memory card installed.
so i have to install a memory card ?I have 1 GB internal memory
ty the first try with the memory card 8Gb and it worked 😀
Did you get it installed after?
yes, i installed a memory card 8GB and it worked.I just had 1 GB internal memory, maybe you cant use it for Henkaku, but i have never read that before in this page.
i have a question ? the scene of hacking of ps vita is burning ? is there a method of installing cfw or pkgs or even a dev for real vita roms …
This is good. I’ll wait till MGBA develops more though.. I hope an update gets pushed out soon
I’m really grateful that you’re periodically collating all of the information on the latest Retroarch developments, as it’s definitely the most promising emulator solution for the Vita by a long shot. Thanks, and keep it up!
I’m happy to see gPSP up and running. Not quite up to par with the VHBL version yet, but I’m sure it will get there with time. Does Prboom support the in-game music? I had audio but no music.
gPSP already supports several games at full speed???
It’s not true 😉
full speed not reality on 444 mhz ((
pffft i have tried for about 20 minutes messing with this odd version of gpsp i guess i’ll just wait for gpsp kai it was way easier 2 get woeking anyway. already have a bios but the thing says it doesnt exist when i load gpsp up
got it working but i’d like to change the controls and how do i bring up the in game menu like on kai or mgba?
I want psp emu on vita 3.60.
