Nintendo was cool again, for about 2 weeks. And then it wasn’t anymore.
If you’ve missed on the Pokemon Go frenzy, you must have literally been living under a rock, and even then I have to assume some people would have tried to move that rock just to catch you or something. Within a Week, Nintendo became the new cool kid in school, and everything they were doing was awesome again.
Nintendo was everywhere over the past few weeks. With Pokemon Go of course, but also with their upcoming release of the NES Mini, a retro system that will be shipping with 30 NES titles embedded. It’s now been confirmed that the tiny device will not have ways to load additional titles from the 30 initial ones (also I read that the AC adapter will be sold separately? Is this for real?), but even with that, it’s guaranteed to be a huge success this year for Christmas.

Yup, Nintendo was milking the retro/nostalgia fans, and we nostalgia fans loved it, and everything was great. They even made their developer portal homebrew friendly a few weeks ago.
Of course, most people only saw the Pokemon Go success, but to me it felt Nintendo was on a winning streak.
Then people realized Nintendo doesn’t really have much to do with Pokemon Go. Nintendo announced a few days ago that investors should not except a big boost in earnings after the Pokemon Go launch. And all of a sudden investors realized that yeah, Pokemon is not really related to Nintendo. So the Nintendo stock plunged double digits. And it’s funny in a sad way that people bet on the wrong company after the success of that video game, only to get reminded by the company itself that they shouldn’t expect a huge return on investment.

And so we’re back to normal, where Nintendo makes fun games, but is not expected to be a behemoth like Sony or Microsoft. Pokemon Go will still be a huge success, so everything’s fine.
AC adapter sold seperately because it’s just a phone charger. There’s a micro USB port on the system for power input only.
This is actually quite clever, because that way Nintendo just needs one package for all countries and doesn’t have to care about EU/US/GB/… plugs.
I heard a rumour that a snes mini will be released as well. NES is cool and all but we can emulate it so well already.
Pokemon Go also seems terrible. I can’t believe it became so popular — I think it’s a bad omen.
So far there are rumors about a SNES mini, an N64 mini and I even read some rumors about a Gamecube mini. But they are just that, rumors. Not even all facts about the NES mini are known yet (I read a board discussion about the cable length of the controler in another board, because in some promo pics it looks like it’s only about 1 meter long) and it is another four months until it gets released. Also nobody even knows if the NES mini will be released in Japan aswell, because there the Famicom had a different case than the NES.
I cant see the good in the nes mini? Why not just go buy the actual NES and play the actual NES games?
It doesnt have any of the games i want to play and its limited to 30 games and i bet itll cost 100x the cost of a nes from a 2nd hand store.
I say stick with emulators as they work on nearly console or device and sometimes look better than the actual console would.
Its emulators or the actual console which is a better idea than a stupid limited money grab.
It’s $60, you can barely get an original NES for that, plus some of the titles included are very pricey by the cartridge. This device isn’t for us who emulate things and pay nothing, this is for people who aren’t tech savvy (they still exist) to play a collection of old Nintendo games in HD rather cheaply, or for just fans of Nintendo in general. Those little Genesis, Atari’s, Colecovisions, Intellivisions, etc sell mad amounts. I’m surprised Nintendo hasn’t done this sooner.
actually most 2nd hand nles’ will probably be more expensive than 59.99, which is what the the price of the mini is
I disagree, in order to get most of these games, a controller, and a good-working NES(whether it be a top-loader, or front loader) your going to pay at least 150 or so, probably a lot more. Of course there’s always flash carts, but while those may be legal, the roms probably aren’t.
Let’s see. An NES in good working condition, halfway decently looking (minor scratches and so on, no missing parts) with controllers (controllers are pretty cheap, doesn’t really matter if you get 1 or 2): 50 $
1. Zelda 1: 30 $
2. Zelda 2: 30 $
3. Donkey Kong: 30$
4. Mega Man 2: 25$
5. Super Mario Bros: 5$
6. Super Mario Bros 2: 20 $
7. Super Mario Bros 3: 15$
8. Castlevania: 20$
9. Castlevania 2: 30$
10. Final Fantasy: 35$
If I calculated correctly I am at 290$ (without shipping costs), and only 10 of the 30 games. The rest of the games isn’t all that valuable (with some exceptions), but you still get some nice ones.
Also you have save functions, HDMI output (which is REALLY nice when you play the games on a flatscreen) and some more features (like the possibility to use the controllers with your WiiU).
And considering that Nintendo is still sitting on a lot of IP (the other Mega Man games for example) there may actually be another revision of NES minis (like the NES mini 2) with a different games list getting a release date.
Nintendo does not own Megaman at all, and never will. Capcom is the holder of the Megaman IP, and given Capcom hates Megaman, it’s a wonder we have even one on the mini.
stop making click bait titles!
Dafuq is this article? It has literally no value :D.
Seriously? What kind of cancer is this post? Nintendos stocks are still at a recent high, for one. They did not plunge double digits as you said. The charging cable is a freaking micro usb so everyone has one. The nes mini was originally stated to not a have any way of loading anything but the standard 30 games, so saying “it’s now been confirmed” like it was secret for a while is redundant. Not to mention, Nintendo has way more money stocked than Microsoft or Sony, with the 3ds alone being a way bigger “behemoth” as you put it. Whoever wrote this article is a literal idiot.
How did Nintendo not drop “double digits”? They went from a peak of 32,000yen to now 22,000 yen. If you think 22,000 yen is still good because they were 14,000 yen two weeks ago….wrong, they were already at 23,000 yen as soon as they announced DeNA partnerships. The price now is just a confirmation that they are worth what they are based on mobile gaming commitment. Given there is no mobile game that materially affects their bottom line, the current price is just a gamble on whether the Fire Emblem game or Animal Crossing game will be a hit success.
Also a publicly traded company with that much cash is just a reflection of Nintendo’s inability to invest where the money should have gone years ago. No solid investment in an true unified online system, no investment in HD gaming where they were caught with their pants down for the WiiU generation and no investment in solid new IP that’s why it took years for them to finally release quality like Splatoon. In otherwords they have that cash because they never bothered spending it.
Microsoft and Sony are both conglomerates, they don’t horde cash because hording cash is dumb when you have avenues to diversify into different product markets.
Jesus christ Nintendo. A charger must cost like 2 dolars to make. Stop beeing cheap and include the damn chargers.
It’s not about producing one charger. You have to produce different chargers for all regions of the world, becaue for example the US have a different power plug than the EU, and the Brits have even another one. Nintendo simply saves themselves the trouble and produces one package for all regions in the world.
If it’s about doing one hardware for the entire world why do they put region locking into the systems? Following that logic you could say that if they don’t produce any hardware they wont have any sort of localization problems.
If they want to be a worldwide company they have to deal with those sorts os stuff. At least make the american, the european, the british and the japanese models of plugs (and i’m from brazil so i’m not defending my on that one homeand). I mean, they sell the chargers separately anyway so they still have to produce it.
I’m not defending my homeland on that one**
Region locking? You do realize that the NES mini can only play the 30 built-in games? There is no region-locking whatsoever. Also the HDMI standard is the same worldwide. Again, not including a charger and only having to produce one packaging reduces the costs on such a thing greatly, and with something as relatively cheap as the NES mini that’s quite a margin.
Not a N-fanboy but honestly this is probably the worst article I’ve ever read on wololo in the last 3 years.
Probably the author is one of those nintendo haters.
And for the “damn nintendo the charger for 3DS is cheap” people I would remind them how Sony pumped up the HD functions for the PS3 and in the box you found the system with… an A/V cable, LOL
I never play a game or watch a movie or join a social media that the masses are doing. I like to do my own thing and think independently. I get scared of the world when everyone seems to like or be doing or be joining the same stupid activity just because its the popular thing. There is no WE. There is only YOU. What do YOU like? I will never tweet or facebook, and in turn that will make me the only surviving human in the end. Because I think independently…I CREATE
This is a biased, poorly written article. Even I could write a better article, and I would if I had the time/could get paid for it. Shame on you for allowing this nonsense, Wololo.
I don’t see what’s wrong, he can blog whatever he want.
And I can criticize it 😀 is this guy not getting something out of writing articles? If he doesn’t get paid, does he get something else in return? If he does not get any benefits, then please ignore my comments. If he does, however, then I do have a right to complain.
