Well … at least … they release things … while others … make screenshots, videos, or … tweets. Go home, I don’t care about your childish multimedia ego boosting.

    • wololo says:

… he said, posting a comment on the internet and thinking it would make some sort of difference.

      • well says:

Solid view for the operator of a news site … Oo Btw. my post was neither ego boosting nor multimedia – so it wasn’t really a (good) burn 😉

        • wololo says:

Before being the “operator of a news site” as you say, I was the first hacker to release a homebrew loader for the PSP Go in 2010, then for the PS Vita in 2012. What has your contribution to the hacking scene been, besides posting comments like this one?

          • well says:

First off, that doesn’t matter. I can argue that the behavior of the scene(s) is despicable without being an active part of it. Maybe many people are not part of it because the scene is such a misguided place.

Secondly, if you carefully observe your own comment, you will note the exact same issue that I tried to point out. You justify the value of your opinion by assigning your name to a piece of work. Who cares? Kojimas opinion on a topic has no more or less value because he created Metal Gear. Unless it’s game design (or production). Your opinion on the scene and the current way of misguided ego boosting (and other sicknesses) is no more or less relevant with or without contributions. A code of conduct and views on sharing and teaching has nothing to do with the work produced. Where would you be without society, schools and much more clever people who have provided the groundwork for your thoughts and work. You probably would be as unable to make fire as I would be.

I am not overly concerned with names, fame, money or being the first. This is how it should be. People enjoying the work and knowledge they openly share with each other. Without concern of who did what, just thankful that somebody seemingly did it and learn from it and teach and attract other to it. But what you owe society is to openly publish all that you can to the best of your abilities, and not just make you and your closed society get better or gain. Fail0verflow is a prime example of how misguided views and actions are prominent at the top. They give a rough overview on something their group did and I am supposed to applaud their ego. Stuff is leaked between people with the comment *don’t make it public* and I am supposed to acknowledged greatness. Nah. Share it, and explain it to the gamers who then get so interested that they try it. That’s greatness. And you wonder why people only want to copy? It’s all this ***. They get turned off by it.

People here behave like companies who have to lock up their knowledge and claim superiority. In time they turn into missionaries of the same system who have to promote copyright, money, secrecy, control, reputation and fame. Sad. If people wanna copy. Let them copy, until the system which arbitrarily restrict the natural need (ability) to copy as a primate crumbles and something better is created. Obvously most of us don’t agree with the system, even those who publicly defend it. An emulator isn’t illegal, but the ROM very likely is. So what? I am supposed to pay 10 bucks for a locked up virtual game? Out of what? Morality? Because they are so moral? Law? Because they are so lawful? They got enough money and employ very few people with it (compared to e.g Walmart). When the system forces them to pay society (patents-like) for keeping their copyright, maybe then I defend the approach.

Lastly, I am sitting right now if front of a PC (re-)watching Star Trek (wishing it was voyager) before switching to the necessary annual Die Hard, while coding for the scene. I just don’t give two sh*ts if you believe me or if you think that makes my opinion more or less relevant. Because it doesn’t. You can judge a meal to be good, without being able to do it better. And it’s still a valid opinion. That aside, there is more then one scene, and more then one way of contributing to the public. Just the approach of locking up your knowledge, for what ever reason is very unsocial and inappropriate to society. It makes them Leeches the the general knowledge they gained from others. Even corporations today share a vast amount of things. If the scene does not, a new programmer will simply work on Gnome (or llvm) instead. Thats misguided. (Likewise any git without a README is misguided, but that’s another topic.)

      • Ricky D says:

        ….which doesn’t make him wrong

        • wololo says:

When insulting me directly, it does. Before “making screenshots” or “tweets”, I was one of the most active devs of the PSP scene, then of the Vita ePSP scene. I’ve released way more than “screenshots” over the past years. Bottom line, unless he’s a hacker posting under a fake name, I’ve released way more than he ever will for the scene.

I’m getting tired of people forgetting this. Just because I haven’t coded in years doesn’t mean my work doesn’t exist 🙂

          • well says:

Actually, was not directed at you at all. But it hit you for the same reason (see above). And yes, I don’t know you. I am not gonna post under a name here. And the only issue with that is yours. I have many identities and I keep them well separated and aliased. There are so many names you would need to honor if you want to do it apropriately. And in turn, a name in the scene is worth much less then say a Fields Medal winner. So I ask you in turn. Do you know Grigori Perelman?

It’s pointless to hunt for fame. Just be happy if you turned one gamer into a coder. Even if he does not remember you later on. You have done something for the world. By making a guy smarter and active in an important field. If he remembers and honers you (privately or publicly) it’s good, but his choice.

Do you honor all your computer science teachers still? I do. I don’t tell them. I am sure other do the same about you. Not telling you. Not being here. Long having moved on 🙂 Life. Don’t get stuck on your ego.

Oh, and the whole comment was not an affront to the website.

          • well says:

To clarify the above further: “videos” or “tweets” was meant at those like CTurt or Fail0verflow … and o-so-many others who primarily seem to think that that is an appropriate release (though CTurt did some writing …) or even relevant. If you released things, that comment was not directed to your contributions. And I fully except if attentions change. You can contribute well in other areas (e.g. running wololo). I think that’s where we missed each other – and where I was not attacking you at all. News (or any digests and explanations) are well more worth then a non explained code. How about adding a dev centric section?

          • wololo says:

I see what you mean. We used to have a dev centric section on the forums, but it wasn’t very popular 🙁

          • well says:

Lol, I just noticed that you took “Go home” and “your” to mean you XD Naaaah, I meant “you” the scene famers. Sorry dude, from that point it seemed very offensive 🙁

          • Ricky D says:

he wasn’t talking about you. He was talking about the “devs” that do nothing but post videos but never release anything.

I think you owe him an apology, sir.

          • wololo says:

Yup, I realize that now. Sorry, @well

          • well says:

See, isn’t that the sad part though? An unpopular dev section, dead wikis, some people doing code no readmes though, silent ircs, and a lot of people who do some hush-hush sharing 🙁

I state the following theory: That’s the way, because the value system of the scene is misguided. not because the work is too tiresome. We need to value explanations and invitations to the hobby (or lifestyle) much more then the proliferation circus.

Just to further note my appreciation: The contest you do here are very cool. I wish that more people would center around something (for example wololo) and actively give interviews and explanations on their (or other peoples) progress and information on their work to a level that would attract more people instead of detouring them. There are many information and exploits being released by security researchers or even developed cooperatively on github, so I don’t really even buy into the fear. CTurt has received solely(?) appreciation for the articles (but didn’t really make it clear on how much work was actually done by others – and was called out on that). And he also didn’t actually publish enough for the uninitiated. Why can’t we do that? Esp. not on something like fixed exploits on old firmwares. I find that distasteful. I actually honor the digest writer or leaker more then the hush-hush-hand-to-hand creator. At least they do something useful.

On that node: “Uh wasn’t that the file system dump I gave you ages ago”, “truely useless now” – What a phony, he needs to claim even an outdated filesystem leak done (finally) by somebody else. And before that the leaker also had to claim “look I got a filesystem mommy – merry xmas” – oy, what phonies.

If we can’t change this, it’s clear why copyrighted material will (rightfully) prevail as the main topic of interest and why homebrew is (sadly) being absorbed into (closed source) mobile games. What is there in the scene if not learning or self-made independent games? A bunch of (clever) guys who need an ego injection. Anybodies guess as to why … And, obviously, copying commercial games. Again, then I could just contribute to the julia language on github or cemu or any other neat thing. Maybe the combination of it all is whats truly gonna kill it 🙁

Ricky: Nah … reading it again I was very unclear 😐 Espessialy if you put yourself into the role of a (multimedia news) writer, it is easy to misunderstand. I consider that my fault and settled 🙂 But thanks non the less! 🙂

          • well says:

Sorry I meant citra, cemu is closed and has the same questionable ethics and viewpoints then the rest of the scene.

    • Kira_Slith says:

      TL;DR
Shut up, expect nothing, and enjoy everything you get. You might actually enjoy your life if you stop complaining about what you don’t have.

  2. Jesse says:

Sky3ds+ will be the new way forward.

    • AMD says:

Yep, it is. Every time Nintendo updates physical game checks, you will need to buy a new flashcart.

      It is indeed the future.

      • Tony says:

If they would make a sky3ds card similar to the dstwo+ that manages to emulate the gateway card, would it not be possible to do the same so long as nintendo is only making minor changes?

        • Jesse says:

The problem is that to run the Gateway exploits you need to be on <9.2 firmware which is getting harder and harder to find unless you want to pay a huge amount.

Sky3ds+ runs on newer firmware and runs games that Gateway doesn't (Anit-Piracy ROMs). It also allows you to load the Ninjhax exploits for homebrew, which is pretty nifty, as this gets better and better and could be used for things in the future. This cart paired with an R4 dual-core DS card and I'm set.

I'm sure in the future some CFW's for 3DS will come out, but this is basically the only thing for newer firmware at the moment to load homebrew.

          • Tokita says:

Wait, when you said “runs games that Gateway doesn’t”, what games Gateway can’t run?

I thought it was the other way around, Sky3DS can’t some games (particularly the latest ones) but Gateway can.

          • Jesse says:

I misspoke, apparently Gateway can run AP games. The real reason to get a Sky3ds+ (“+” is the brand new card) is that is will work on newer firmware without the need for skiN AND.

  3. Alaster says:

*sigh* still not a newer firmware support though 🙁 That would be the BEST thing 🙁

  4. Smoker1 says:

Be careful with some Codes that are coming out. LOL. Mario Kart 7 (Eur) got 1 Code today but is absolutely useless. Not only do you go fast, but so does everyone else, and you go so fast, that it is basically unplayable.
Also, NSMB2 (US) got 4 new Codes today, but only seem to work on the very 1st Level of the Game. Also dont know which Code it is or combination of Codes, but after a while, the System Locks up.
