Is the PS Vita dying? or is it already dead?
I didn’t originally intend this post to be a rant, but, at this rate, it probably is. I’ve been quite vexed recently. No, it’s not because of bad grades, and no, it’s not because I didn’t get the high-score in Terminal Velocity. The reason for my agitation was because of a morbid sight.
The morbid sight of my PS Vita, sitting inside its case, hidden deep inside my drawer with the rest of my miscellaneous things. I can just take it out, put it to charge, and play some games on it. But, I don’t feel like it.
The PS Vita was unique in almost every single way. There was an initial rush of consumers because it was one of a kind. With 2 analog sticks, dual touch pads, and a pandora’s box of other features, it was held to be one of the greatest portable console of our generation.
Then, why am I not sitting behind it with my face inches away from the gorgeous, 5-inch screen?
Most users’ argument would probably go along the lines of, “there’s not much games on it” or ” I just don’t feel like it”. Like it or not, the PS Vita is dying. But, why?
There are a myriad of factors, so, I’m going to go over the important ones, then skim over the less important ones.
Firstly, let’s begin with the lack of AAA titles. By lack, I mean rarity. The PS Vita is built for AAA titles, but Sony feels that indie titles and minis will suit it better. Come on! The PS Vita is built with the greatest hardware for its time, and I feel that it’s a waste of money, as well as potential.
The AAA titles that already exists are stale after this long period of time. Taking LittleBigPlanet as an example, we can see that the lack of DLCs/Updates provides you with the same old *** over and over again. The repetition is getting a bit bland, isn’t it?
Then, Sony goes way over it’s head and openly declares the PS Vita as a “legacy platform”. I mean, what’s the deal with that?!
Often a pejorative term, referencing a system as “legacy” often implies that the system is out of date or in need of replacement.
Here is the definition of “legacy platform” straight outta Wikipedia. You can probably see how stupid this is.
Second, let’s go over Sony’s memory cards. Proprietary memory cards = better security. But, also, proprietary memory cards = $$$. At launch the PS Vita’s memory cards cost $30, $45, $70, and $120 for the 4, 8, 16, and 32 gig options, respectively. Currently, they cost $18, $22, $40, $80 for the 4, 8, 16, and 32 gig options, respectively. Not a dramatic decrease in price, but a decrease, nonetheless.
Now, let’s take a look at the Nintendo 3DS’ memory chips. The 64 gig option costs less than $30 while the 128 gig option costs less than $80. The PS Vita supports 64 gigs, but, at $130.
You can see that the 3DS offers double the storage but just shy of half the price.
But, why are there no AAA titles for the Vita? You can point fingers at Sony, or the Developers, but, I think the problem lies with us, the consumers. There’s a lot of negativity in the air about the Vita, and social media aids in this approach.
Personally, I believe that the hacking scene pumps new blood into the Vita, and this has, of course, shown similar results on the PSP. Maybe, history will repeat itself. The hacking scene has a lot more to offer than what Sony ever could, and I think that’ll make all the difference.
I still regret buying the Vita. I paid over $500 on it, and there it is, in my drawer catching dust. I could sell it right now if I want to, but, I’m confident that the hacking scene will surely bring the Vita back on it’s feet in no time. Then again, only time can tell.
So, to address the main question. No, the Vita is not dead, but it sure is dying. Let me know what you guys think in the comments below. Until next time, have a good one.
Cheers,
Hyperaktiv

Yes, personally I think Vita gets too much flack from consumers. But it might be partially because Nintendo has generally held the handheld market for as long as it has.
I don’t regret my Vita, but I do admit, most of what I have on the Vita are either PSX or PSP titles. Most of the Vita titles are indies as well.
mine is collecting dust.
You stealed the first place!
stole*
it is stole not stealed.
mine is resting on it’s vault (coffin?), on the floor of my room with some books and other stuff… been so hooked on monster hunter 4 lately, wish it was on the vita instead…
THIS! SO MUCH THIS!!!!
WHY CAPCOM! WHY?!
I just want high definition Monster Hunter with camera controls that don’t suck. Is that really too much to ask?
I think, if there is a way were vita could do the same thing that psp did with the ps one game but this time with the PS2 game be emulated in the Vita that will give some momentum to the system
That’ll never happen
It’s for some mysterious thing called HARDWARE!
Mine is gathering dust as well… Sometimes I feel like it’s completely dead and the next day I see new stuff coming from the scene as a glimpse of hope.
Only time will tell..
The vita is dead and died a long time ago. I have a ps4 but still despise sony. This is my last generation buying sony products after what they did to the vita and other underhand tactics theyve used this generation. I cant take it. I loved my vita for a little bit. But now its useless. There is not one game released this year probably that i want on my vita. heck even the indies are on pc and ps4 so why would i buy a vita version? This handheld is trash. The 3ds may not have a *** ton of games i like personally but guess what theyre still supporting their damn handheld with STRONG titles and even released a newer model
It wont die if there are good tweaks coming out for it,the scene will keep it going for a good amount of time…that is of course if it gets hacked to its full potential 🙂
Its been DEAD for a while. No hope. DEAD. There’s a still a few PPL shouting ‘its not dead’ but that’s just 13 y.o.’s in denial. Time to face the facts its been DEAD. If your a game maker you won’t invest in it . Its a loss for developers – period. If developers are not investing in a product – its dead. The community can only support a *** like the Vita for so long. Too bad really. I bought my Vita in the hopes for Gran Turismo. Never happened. I played more PS1 classics than any Vita title. The games were just better. But I didn’t buy the Vita to play PS1/PSP games and that’s the dilemma. Should have just got a PSP. It was a learning experience for me though. It was the first Sony game console I ever bought, and the last.
FINALLY! SOMEONE WITH COMMON SENSE ABOUT THE VITA!!! I’VE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS!!! AMEN!!!
I also hope that the homebrew scene will bring the best of Vita. I actually have 2 Vita TVs and really like it. At first I was going to use it only for remote play, I don’t game on Vita that much but can play vita games on it is a nice addition. I have many other consoles and Vita TV brings me the breeze when I am bored playing the other platform.
I disagree. It entirely depends on your taste in games. Personally, I think the vast majority of AAA games are complete overhyped garbage and can’t understand why people want the Vita to have more of them. There are currently 23 upcoming Vita games on my wishlist, and the last time I checked (which was about 3 months ago), the Vita actually had more announced games than ANY other system, in EVERY region. If the Vita is dying, then so are the 3DS, PS4, Xbox One and Wii U. I’ve bought more games for my Vita during its lifetime than I have for any other console in history, and I’m still struggling to keep up with new releases.
I also don’t think that hacks will “fix” things. The amount of people that would buy the system for homebrew games/apps is insignificant in comparison to the ones that would do so for emulators and Vita game piracy. Activision and… whoever else still makes AAA games these days (Square Enix?) isn’t suddenly going to drop their current projects and start developing a ton of Vita games just because there was a brief spike in hardware sales, and if that’s what you’re expecting, you should probably just sell your Vita now.
Derp. Year old ports from other consoles/pc and lackluster indie games (which are also mostly ports) don’t justify a $400 system for which there is to 99% no 1st/2nd party support.
*looks at his vita* *sobs*
True. the lack of AAA titles is what makes the Vita a sad handheld console comparing to the Nintendo’s 3DS. If Sony can demand over some potential popular games in Japan over, it would be great. I know that translating a game from Japanese (or any other languages) to English could take up to a year or more, but some people are willing to wait if they (the companies) are willing to do it. Also, there’s that deal about censorship in video games, but I’ll talk about that another day.
For those of you who are interested, there is a YouTube video with a theory on this subject. I think it has some valid points that back up HyperAktiv’s article. it’s called “Extra Credits – Why the Vita Failed”
The morbid sight of my PS Vita, sitting inside its case, hidden deep inside my drawer with the rest of my miscellaneous things. I can just take it out, put it to charge, and play some games on it. But, I don’t feel like it. (same) X_X
And is collecting dust, because I didn’t start it for 1 year X_X, every thing about PS Vita is expensiv, and no PS Vita Hack, not that PSP and PSX games hack, PSP and PSX games are on my PC or PSP, better if I bought a 3DS or I shall buy 2DS in do time.
In my opinion Sony and Microsoft go the heck, you Blood Sucking Vampiers $ and E, and I am from Romania where Dracula lived.
$500 for a vita?… Crazy, I thought the $150 I spent was a lot.
I loved the PSP so I love the Vita but to be honest without the vhbl and epsp exploits, or rejuvenate… well, the Vita becomes a gloried android phone with physical controls that asks for 30 dollars on a 3 dollar game. Sony WANTS it to die, they must, they keep making outrageously stupid choices with it. To clarify, like the Sony rep did… the phat Vita is the “legacy” device. I can’t be as mad as the rest of you, I got my Vita for a steal, as a pimped out PSP it’s fantastic. That is at the price point I got it though, for 200+ not including accessories I would be furious. In the end all we can do is forget the Sony side of things and focus on the homebrew, for the people who get around to it too late or the people looking to buy… it’s kind of a bum deal.
No, the PS Vita isn’t dead nor is dying. The system is a JRPG one, and as a fan of that genre, I’m more than happy with it and there’s an awesome amount of games coming each month.
The PS2 was a JRPG system.
The PS Vita is an indie port system.
Also, most of the JRPGs on the PS Vita are not good.
The only good ones are probably Ys: Memories of Celceta, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel I&II, Atelier, Persona 4 Golden and Tales of Hearts R.
That is around…11 games, which is bad since the PS Vita has been out in the West for almost 4 years now.
The PSP had far more than that by then if I recall correctly.
Of course, there are probably a few good JRPGs that have not been translated, but the PSP had the same problem.
That point is really vague. It heavily depends on taste. And the number of those few Vita JRPGs, you mentioned, feels like everything that was ever localized on PS2.
Like the PS1, PS2 was a system, that had good JRPGs. But it had a big problem: The lack of localisations. PSP had a similar problem. PS Vita on the other hand is great to play very niche JRPGs, as its games get released on a pretty steady basis. Even visual novels get localized, which is a genre of games, that almost never came to the west before the Vita.
Imo, it’s totally valid of Majaraja, to say, the Vita is a great JRPG system. If you want to play JRPGs these days, at all, a Vita is a must have. There is no doubt about it. In total there are less JRPGs than on SNES, PS1 and PS2. But that is not the Vitas fault. With the growing number of gamers, the mainstream-taste has sadly shifted a little. The indie-thing is true, too. But it’s only the cherry on the cake.
I do not know what you are talking about.
There are probably more JRPGs on the 3DS than the PS Vita.
Also, the PS2 had far more worthy JRPGs localized than the PS Vita.
Dark Cloud 1&2, Raidou Kuzunoha 1&2, Avatar Tuner 1&2, Dragon Quest VIII, Drakengard 1&2, Final Fantasy X&XII, Kingdom Hearts I&II, Persona 3, Persona 4, Rogue Galaxy, Shadow Hearts II, Shin Megami Tensei III, Star Ocean 3, Suikoden III, Tales of the Abyss, Valkyrie Profile 2, Wild Arms III and Xenosaga I-III.
As for visual novels, well, there are a few of them (Amnesia, Code:Realize, Hatoful Boyfriend, Muv-Luv Alternative, Steins;Gate, and the two XBLAZE games), but 7 visual novels is not a lot, especially when you consider how many visual novels exist.
The PS Vita’s main games right now are ports…of indie games.
I would not mind that usually, but the PS Vita’s potential is being greatly wasted…
The 3DS has open-world games like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask (yes, I know that they are Nintendo IPs; not the point), even though it only has one circle pad and worse hardware.
The PS Vita has two analog sticks and better hardware, yet it is only getting games that need one analog stick and weak hardware…
It is truly a waste.
Anyway, you should not bring “taste” into the matter.
Nearly everything is subjective, and, once you bring that into the matter, there is no standard for quality.
Why? Because there could be someone out there who loves games that crash every 5 minutes or erase their saves.
What do you mean there’s no good JRPGs for the PS Vita? That’s the main thing I play on it. How about Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD, Dungeon Travelers 2, Demon Gaze, SAO Hollow Fragment and Lost Song (recently released), Conception II, Disgaea 1-4 (either PSP or ported PS3 Vita titles), Hyperdimension Neptunia Rebirth 1-3 and Hyperdevotion Noire and more coming out in the next few months. That’s at least 15 titles right there and not to mention the slew of great PSP JRPGS that are available for download through the PSN store. Granted the PSP titles have other platforms that they can be emulated on for free, but you can’t say there’s no JRPGs on this console. Between JRPGs and visual novels there’s plenty of content to be had here other than indies (although I will be purchasing Salt and Sanctuary when it’s released).
Let’s not forget our Japanese literate readers, the Vita is doing extremely well in parts of Asia but horrible in the rest of the world.
“You can point fingers at Sony, or the Developers, but, I think the problem lies with us, the consumers.”
The problem is certainly not due to only one side, but you cannot just say that only the consumers are the cause of the problem.
Sony, after all, was the first to make a mistake.
When the 3DS launched, it had a very slow start, but Sony did not use this opportunity.
Instead, they waited until the 3DS fixed most of the problems and started getting better games.
They also ruined their relationship with Capcom and their Monster Hunter series last generation, so the PS Vita did not get any of the main games like the PSP did.
Not only that, but they charged far too much for the system’s memory cards, despite online being one of the system’s better areas compared to the 3DS.
Then, the developers/publishers made a mistake.
The people who made the PS Vita Call of Duty and Resistance games and the ones who ported Borderlands 2 seem to have done a horrible job.
Because of the failure of those games and the interest in systems with better sales (PS4, 3DS, mobile), many developers stopped trying to make games for the system.
Lastly, the consumers are defending the system’s current games (indies and fanservice) by saying that it should be a niche console for people who want those games which is wrong (not saying that indies are bad though)
Then you have trolls and Nintendo fans making jokes about the system being like the Dreamcast or being a “waifu” system (which the PS Vita fans are not helping)
The system could be revived in quite a few ways, but no one is helping to get that done.
Sony in particular just ruined that chance of revival even further with their recent comment about not making AAA games for it.
Also to be fair before Vita released Nintendo dropped their handheld price by like $80 and released a 3d Mario game so Sony was already in a losing battle. They really should have focused on midrange AA games. All the ports they did were a waste of time since they didn’t run well half the time.
The ports would not have been that bad of an idea if the publishers had hired developers that could port the games without so many problems.
I blame Sony, although I, for a while, along with other consumers could be held partially accountable. I played my Vita for a while when I first bought it and my boys were first born, but then it gathered dust. If it wasn’t for getting a PS TV bundle for highly discounted price and release of a game called Dungeon Travelers 2 (a fanservicey but very good dungeon crawler), I would have left mine in a storage box as well. I don’t agree with the not making AAA games killing the system though. I think other factors that are bad decisions on Sony’s part are what is killing it, such as: making public statements such as the Vita is a legacy system, overpriced (still) proprietary memory cards, focusing on “security and stability updates” rather than adding features that owners have been asking for for a while (just like they did with the PSP), lack of cross-platform/cross-buy/cross-save support with the PS4 titles unlike Japan where almost every PS4 title has release parity with it’s little brother console counterpart, lack of features and a botched launch of the PS TV, and just a lack of overall advertising and emphasis for the console. I could care less if they ever release another triple-A game for the Vita. Killzone Mercenary was decent, but God of War collection was another rehash of the same game I have played on 3 other platforms now with less games than the PS3 collection and suffered from performance issues with terrible framedrops. Just give me my JRPG goodness and I am good, but I am not the typical gamer probably.
first or something
I too paid a lot of money for my Vita, especially considering I purchased it when it first came out. Other people would buy a Vita and resell it but I have been holding on to mine in hopes that Sony would keep supporting it. Where Sony fails, hackers succeed. I’m not looking to play any pirated ps vita games. With such a powerful device, we could see all types of custom games and emulators. I have faith in the Vita
Piracy is the only thing that can actually revive and save the PS Vita >.> It did so for the PSP and can do so for the Vita if people can actually hack the *** thing and get kernel access to allow ISOs to be played
I love my vita. I wish I could play more on it but the whole memory card issue is the biggest problem for me. And I think, even if the vita does get fully hacked with CFW and all that fun stuff, the memory cards will still be an issue. I own Final fantasy 1-9 on the psn but I can’t even play them unless I drop a bunch of money on more memory or delete other games I want to play. I personally believe that memory cards are the reason the Vita is dying. If they would’ve went with micro SD, I’m sure a lot more people would be interested.
Dude you’re absolutely right I’ve been snooping around everywhere for vita news, everyday I’m hoping for good news but still nothing is interesting except for some TN-V or ARK news other than that it’s just deserted I hope hackers could help in the rise of the vita, then maybe sony will think about making AAA titles
Probably not going to happen
Sad but true. The last game O was truely excited about was FFX/X2 but then again I’ve played that numerous times…. I recently went to a Game store in London and they had zero physical Vita games :/
Yes well. The vita was dead from the very beginning. I envisioned so many possibilities from day one of what the vita could do and not one of them came true. And what i wanted it to do the most was delayed, play playstation one games. Instead they focused on social media apps that don’t mean anything. Its not a smart device, its a gaming device.
I have my vita in my drawer too, but that’s only because i have an nvidia shield, a 3ds, an ipod …etc. In fact, I have been going back to gamestop every month to buy used vita games!!! Games that were originally 40 bucks are now 10 or less!! I have almost 20 games now!! The moral of the story is that the longer you wait, the better the vita gets…
sigh
^piracy to the rescue
Highly doubtful it will happen, as many Vita fanboys are anti-piracy little ***
They spent too much time worrying about someone hacking it. I want good games for a new system, not psp games.
i fully agree with you, starting with the overpriced memory cards, alltho i woudnt care to pay 130bucks if they at least gave me something good back. they simply abandoned the vita. no 3A titles as u said.
if an awesome console tho 🙂
i love that hackers are interested to support this console. love emulators! :;D
nice post bruh, peace
I don’t know where you buy memory cards but they are way cheaper than that, I got a 64gb for $82 last month.
Still doesn’t justify the price/memory ratio in an era where a micro SD class 10 GOLD from sandisk costs less than it’s capacity. Also the Vita memory read/write speed are terrible by this generation hardware standars and as for capacity limination the 64GB limit is f**king joke, if not an insult to hardcore gamers like me.
its already 6 feet under …
I feel you there brother, I have only 5-6 worthy games on my PSVita and I can’t buy new ones because of the stupid memory cards. Sony doesn’t give a F**K about gamers, if the system fails it’s the devs/gamers fault. The last resort that they had to boost the Vita was the PSM Dev program but they stopped it cause “hakerz are bad” instead of patching the damn thing. Also every Sony fanboy will never admit that the only think that kept PSP for so long was the hacking/reverse hardware engeeniring scene, because they unlocked the full potential of the device throught emulators and the actual possibility to have 128GB memory without spending a fortune on the cards. Last but not least the power to backup my games from the UMD made me buy more games because I didn’t had back then wireless internet to buy them, so I bought them from my local store and also ported my 20 PS1 games on my PSP and played for hours. I have 3 psps, 1000-2000-3000 and I was ready to buy a PSP Go. As for my Vita ….
First!!! Yes, the psVITA is a dead platform.
Persons prefer to play games on mobile phones or in TV with a ps4/xbox.
Dead it is.
I have 3 of them and the Vita Tv so i feel like i wasted money on them but if i never used the exploits on the vita tv and one of my vitas then yeah i wouldn’t play them.
I bought mine at a pawn shop for a little over $100 two years ago. It sat around for quite a while since I was on a budget and couldn’t afford many games at the time. Then I got Plus and started getting more into playing it and have bought a few good titles (physical copies) for it. I enjoy it for what it is but it is sad compared to the PSP, DS, 3DS, … Sony hasn’t given us many good first party titles and other devs have been put off for some reason or another. (No GTA?! ***!) With this announcement of the Vita being a “legacy” device we can expect to see a great decrease in the prices on the Store right? Pffffttt… Many of the good (and not so good) titles have stayed at or near the original price. Not only that but PSP and PS1 titles have the same pricing situation going on. There is very little that Sony has to do to put these titles up for sale and they are nearly pure profit for them and other companies. This is another contributing factor to the stagnation of the Vita.
Then they gave the promised dev kit way later than they suggested it would come — only to take it away for hacking fears (which still hasn’t broken the system wide open and requires inconvenient wireless “tethering”).
It would be interesting to see how many units ePSP hacking has helped to sell. We all know that homebrew pushed the sale of PSPs immensely and if the Vita was easier/more capable of being hacked then there would probably be many more units sold/selling.
i love ps vita. For me is a live system.
The Vita still has some life in it if you a re a fan of Japanese games but even then they are starting to slow down. The Vita was a flawed system from the go. I actually think the Vita was supposed to be more powerful because why else would you include such a high resolution screen when games have to be subnative to have respectable performance. This also ties into why the memory card prices were so expensive to subsidize cost. Another flaw I see is that Sony never capitalized on the App Store concept. There are tons of mobile games that could have run on the Vita but instead of courting those developers they wanted to have their own monopoly on the games and that’s why we ended up with PSMobile.
I love my Vita, it really is the greatest handheld video game system ever made, at least in terms of its hardware. It’s too bad software support has been so lacklustre. I mainly play Minecraft on mine, and some emulators through TN-V. I live in hope’s that one of its designers, not wanting theri creation to die, will leak the signing keys to the internet.
They’ve stopped selling it at EB in Ontario, Canada (they have one on display as a suggested add-on for PS4 owners), no games available at all in mu local store.
It’s really too bad.
Not unless it will have the fate of the PSP where in time all Games and Homebrews are free.
No, it’s dead. It’s been dead for a year or so now. heck, the PSP would have died too, if it didn’t have Monster Hunter to keep it afloat.
But hey, modifications allowing it to function as its superior predecessor but stronger, with some decent emulation, might give it some more use to people like me. Then again, my phone is more powerful and does more than the Vita, too… Really, the only benefit is it has buttons, but that sure won’t secure it space in my pocket (not that it can comfortably fit around my phone and wallet and keys, anyway).
A shame, but Sony relied way too much on consumer loyalty and third parties keeping it afloat (Read: Monster Hunter) and when neither worked, they just threw it to the wolves and demoted it to “Overpriced PS4 accessory.” I don’t know if they’re brave/stupid enough to try again after it, either.
I feel the same way. I’m pretty sure I’d use my Vita more often when I coul play N64/Snes/PSX and maybe someday even ps2 games. It’s so sad Sony gave up on it. But there is so much hacker potential.
Still waiting for some more options I never thought about.
