PS4 3.0 update is out – focuses too heavily on Social Media
The PS4 3.0 update is now rolling out and you should be seeing it available for download on your device pretty soon if that’s not already the case. The Update, codenamed Kenshin, is released simultaneously with ps vita 3.55.
PS4 3.0 Update: What’s new?
This is not going to be a surprise to people who were in the Beta, but this update heavily focuses on Social Media. From Sony’s Blog:
Sharing video clips to Twitter: Now it’s easy to share video clips to Twitter directly from your PS4. You’ll see a new icon on the Upload Video Clip menu, nestled between Facebook and YouTube. Maximum video length is 10 seconds, though you’ll have the ability to trim longer clips. Don’t forget — you can double tap the Share button to start recording a video, and press it again to stop.
PlayStation Plus: We’ve made a dedicated section for PlayStation Plus, which you can access by clicking the big Plus icon on the top left corner of your PS4 home screen. Once there you can easily manage your membership, see the monthly free games to download, deals for PS Plus members, and all of the games you’ve redeemed through PS Plus on PS4.
YouTube live: You’ll see a new icon for YouTube on the Broadcast Gameplay Screen, accessible after hitting the Share button. Now you can live stream directly from your PS4 to YouTube. Livestreams will be viewable across YouTube.
PNG Screenshots: If you’d like your game screenshots to be in a higher quality format, you can now select PNG instead of JPEG. To access, press Share > Share Settings > Screenshot Settings > Image Format.
Events: A new hub for Events has been added to PS4, accessible from the home screen. This will give you an overview of activities taking place in the games you play most, as well as official broadcasts. For instance, here’s an in-game racing event taking place in Project Cars, which you can register for directly from the Events hub.
Improvements to Messages and Favorite Groups: We’ve improved Messages by making it easier to access groups of people you chat and play games with frequently. Once you’re added to or create a group, you’ll see the online status for friends, what games they are playing, and the option to message or chat in party all in one spot. When you add or create a new favorite group, they’ll appear in your Friends app under Favorite Groups for quick access. For example, you can see we have favorite groups for Call of Duty, Rocket League, and Destiny.
Communities: PS4 users will have the ability to create communities based around shared interests, like games, genres, and more. Communities include a message board with general discussion, screenshots shared by players, and the ability to join parties / games.
Stickers: From the PS4 system’s Messages app, you’ll see a new option for Stickers. The 3.00 update will contain stickers themed around Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Knack, LittleBigPlanet 3, Resogun, and more. Instead of typing out a message, just send a sticker — like Drake looking at a watch, asking you to wait a minute.”
PS4 3.0 Update… not really a major update?
Don’t get me wrong: Free updates are free, and PS4 3.0 Update makes the system better overall. But this is really, heavily focused on Social Media and communities. What do people feel about this?
I know the stickers thing is going to get popular. Entire phone apps such as Line have built multi-million dollar companies around this same concept, so I can see it becoming part of every PS4 owner’s interaction. I guess I’m getting too old for that kind of ***?
It’s interesting too that Sony have left out the one “non social media related” thing out of their announcement: PS Plus users get an increase in their online storage from 1GB to 10GB, which is a welcome addition.
Nothing in this update feels “major” to me. No groundbreaking announce such as PS2 or PS3 backward compatibility, external hard drive support for music, official support for Remote Play PC or anything like that. What do you think?

Before the update my cloud storage was full so I’m pretty happy about the increase from 1Gb to 10
Yeah, very lame update. I couldn’t care less about social connectiviy functions. Nothing of any real relevance was added. The only things they did add was to increase Sony’s online brand awareness. It did nothing for the players
Lame update. Though I see their next cash cow, $3 sticker packs. Calling it now.
Yeeaahh….I think we have way tooo much social media already. What about good quality video games???
For anyone hoping to get something cool out of this update: Move along people, nothing to see here… Yes they incremented the primary number from a 2 to a 3 but that supposedly doesn’t mean anything (contrary to what you’d think). Wasn’t 2.0 just as lame too?
I hate it. There are a few things missing and some stupid new things that I’ll never use.
Where is PS1 and PS2 BC? Thats more wanted than stupid twitter sharing.
Is it me or does it look like Nathan Drake is giving the finger?
I really think that all this social media *** has become way to important for like all of the companies. I really don´t want anyone to watch me gaming and i don´t care about others doing so. I am so extremly dissapointed and not satisfied with my PS4 and i think Sony needs to do something for the customers ASAP, or they will be loosing lots of fans and users. I have to agree to Wololo – maybe we are getting to old for this *** and we are getting kinda left behind and not be taken into consideration of Sonys (or other companies) decissions. Be it as it may, this update is completely unneeded and highly overestimated. My PS4 stays disconnected from I-Net until the PS4 will get cracked for piracy as long as it may take.
My two cents.

PS: pls excuse the bad english 😉
Why was my comment erased?
You mean the one above this one? Look again, it’s there now. As you can see further down the page: “Most comments are automatically approved, but in some cases, it might take up to 24h for your comments to show up on the site, if they need manual moderation. Thanks for your understanding “.
Or did you write another comment too, that was actually erased?
Are you kidding me? This update is fantastic. For years Microsoft has blown Sony away with their social aspect of gaming. I see this as them trying to get back in the game. The only thing they need to add now is a way to invite someone to a game through the system and not from within the game. I miss Xbox for this reason as some games don’t even have an invite feature (bf4). So the other player has to join your squad by joining your session. There is absolutely no way to invite someone. On Xbox you simply hit invite and they get a notification saying xxxxxxx invites you to play xxxxxxxx. They accept it and join in two seconds. Not to mention on the Xbox you can send game invites to a whole group of people in 3 seconds. Sony needs to implement those two features and I will be happy.
