Why you might not get to enjoy the PSM hack, even if you did everything right
We recently announced that YifanLu has something cooking up for the PS Vita, and it involves Playstation Mobile (PSM), Sony’s aborted experiment for indie devs on the PS Vita and Android tablets.
YifanLu was slightly fuzzy on why we should do it, but he strongly recommended everyone to register for a PSM Publisher license a few days ago. Now, that could be because Playstation Mobile rocks and everyone should try to create a game for the vita at least once in their life. Or, it could be that since PSM is shutting down soon, Yifan Lu is getting ready to release a Vita native exploit that would become useless otherwise.
If you think it’s the latter, I’d tend to agree with you.
YifanLu has released very straightforward steps on how to get up and running your own PSM games on the Vita. Sadly, one of the steps of the process requires Sony’s approval for you to become a licensed PSM publisher.
In general, getting approved for PSM can take anywhere from a couple hours to a few weeks, based on the feedback I received from people who have been approved in the past. This kind of variation implies that part of the approval process involves some sort of human verification. If such is the case, I’m pretty sure Sony employees will have a closer look at the recent surge in registration requests. In particular when these registrations are for a service scheduled to close in 2 months.
Want to know how big the surge in PSM interest is? Well, it’s easy to verify, since Sony’s official link is a bit.ly url, which provides some interesting graphs to look at (the interesting bit is the last couple days on the right):
Request for the PS Vita PSM Development assistant have been multiplied by 50 overnight, from about 20 a day to more than 1000 a day, after YifanLu’s announcement. As the news of the upcoming “surprise” makes it around the world, we could expect the requests to increase even more.
It might be a bit naive to think that Sony won’t notice something suspicious, and will keep approving PSM Publisher license keys like nothing happened. I have suggested hackers (including Yifanlu) to go with our Ninja release process in the past for similar announcements. Our ninja release process is designed exactly for that kind of scenario, to avoid raising unnecessary suspicion, but hey, your project, your choice. I can only offer my help, not force every single hacker on the scene to do the right thing 🙂
As I type this, I am still waiting for my key.

I do not get the Apply for PSM Publisher License button (maybe because I did it before, I really do not remember) but I get the Register Bank Account button, is that fine?
Did you hack the Vita? That’s a very vague question. What I have done, is run native code on the Vita with the same permissions as the game being exploited. This means I can load homebrews written and optimized for the Vita’s CPU and take full advantage of the CPU speed and RAM (unlike the PSP emulator or PSM, both impose artificial limits on resources and system functions). What has NOT been done (yet) is unlocking the system completely for tasks like USB interfacing, custom themes/system mods/plugins, and (fortunately) pirating games.
What’s UVLoader and how far along is it? The last I’ve spoken, I was beginning work on UVL and asked for any help I could get. Even though, I did not really get help, I did find people who were interested in what I was doing and we exchanged information. I also want to brag that I finished the main functionalities of UVL in a couple of weeks, and it has been “done” for about three months now. (Quotes around “done” because I decided to not worry about some features yet). That means, I can basically load most (most being the few that I manually built without an open sdk) compiled homebrews. You can run your standard hello worlds and spinning cubes and such, but in theory, it should load any homebrew built.
UVL by YIFANLU so a homebrew loader the funny thing is it was written already on December 12, 2012
so yifan has waited more than 2,5 years to realease it now?
smart move!
I hope its a “real” native PS Vita Exploit not a “sandboxed”one in PSM environment like the PSP, and PS1 exploits
Meh, on 3.36 so I don’t have store access anyways. If it’s not native-related, I’ll just continue to relive the past with ePSP.
It was back in 2012 when PlayStation Mobile launched and just a couple of weeks later YifanLu came up with something called UVLoader (UserlandVitaLoader). One can see his project as a Hombrew-Loader like the famous VHBL (Vita-HalfByteLoader) for PSP and ePSP. This native usermode loader was never released and later announced to be ‘patched’ for newer Firmwares. (http://yifan.lu/2012/12/12/playstation-vita-the-progress-and-the-plan/)
YifanLu often stated that he regrets to have made informations available back in the days because people blamed him for not releasing and sharing his exploit. But if something was really patched why shouldn’t one release it so everyone can take a look and learn from it?
That’s the big question here and I won’t continue my speculations here, but I think you got the idea already..

Sony has a problem to deal with -PS4 piracy, it could be good thing for us. I really hope they don’t care for vita that much.
i don’t know how long i can get the key. . JUST waiting
I am getting anxious, they haven’t accepted my request… 4 days waiting.
hey I have a question for the hackers, where would I need to start if I wanted to learn about hacking game devices is it in computer programming, or what would you recommend for someone who wants to start
FIrst you need a decent rig. Save up to buy an Apple 2e… you wont be disappointed. Also if you have access to ISDN line that would be boss. Last thing is, collect as many shells as possible!!! Ask your teachers, family, friends, go to the beach. And remember, real hackers will never admit they are hackers. What happens on wololo.net stays on wololo.net.
Hey everyone, I just wanted to note that I applied from Canada yesterday around noon, and was approved about 3 hours later. I haven’t completed the whole process because I’m on 3.18 and really don’t want to give up Tn-v and Ps1 loader, and I wish we knew a little about what’s coming, like alot of other people have mentioned, i have no interest in vita piracy, i can get any game i want second hand for very reasonable prices, what I want is something like an android or linux os running on the vita natively, with that all our emulation dreams will come true 🙂 i have a dream that sony will eventually look at the vita and say ‘*** it – let’s unlock it and give it to the hackers to play with’, then they won’t be able to produce them fast enough
What a load of bullSh1t…can’t get the licence have to buy it…seems that no hack related to vita is actually without some charge at the end…well I ain’t gonna update for a maybe release…good luck to ya and your hack
I applied for my dev license months ago when I saw you could make an app that would stream your pc to the vita. I forgot about it while waiting, just logged in and saw my license was active 😀
I ordered my license the same day he gave the statement yifanlu 3 days and gave me … I’m in FW 3.18 and could successfully install the BallMazeDemo
And how did u get into psn store to download the app without updating on 3.18?
the application is not in the store … bring it as demo the PSMStudio
And how did u get into psn store to download the app without updating on 3.18?
This is the email you recieve once it is setup on Sony’s end…
Thank you for your purchase of the PlayStation®Mobile publisher license!
With your purchase, you can now test and debug your PSM application on a PlayStation®Vita system or a PlayStation™Certified device. If you would like to sell your PSM application in PlayStation®Store, you must register your payment details on the developer’s profile screen. Please see the FAQ if you have any questions.
i’m still waiting for the fXCKing damn license! 5days!
I’m not quite sure when I did this, but evidently I already have a license and I only needed to renew it? O-o My best guess is that one time I tried using the Vita as a ghetto PC Wii U Gamepad. 😛
I’m glad I registered for a PSM dev license for a game design class.
Why you will enjoy the hack:
As long as you have the psm dev assistant installed on your psvita and have the sdk on your pc you will be able to enjoy the hack thats incoming: even tho you dont have publisher licence.
Yifan lu said on his website that you dont need to have a licence, that he has got this “covered”
