3DS update version 9.7.0-25 is live
We get another update for 3DS/New 3DS. It is 9.7.0-25. It doesn’t bring any new feature, just the infamous stability update.
Official changelog for the new firmware says “Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience”. It generally means blocking of flash carts/hacks, but it seems that is not the case in this update.
The last safe firmware for both original and new 3DS is still 9.2. At this firmware, you can enjoy Ninjhax, NTR CFW, RxTools (original 3DS only), Gateway and various other hacks.
If you are using emuNAND, you can go up to 9.5 firmware on Gateway for both new and old 3DS. If you are using emuNAND on RxTools, you can go up to 9.7 firmware (latest firmware) as of now. Unfortunately RxTools can be used on original 3DS only.
Also it seems SKY3DS and its various clones are still not blocked on firmware 9.7. Nintendo blocks even legit/homebrew only solutions but still not blocking the piracy only flashcarts. Interesting.

That’s what I’d assumed too. If sky3DS just makes itself look like an official cartridge with only whatever rom is selected on it, then it couldn’t be blocked without also blocking the real cartridges.
I don’t know how feasible that actually is, since I’m not familiar with the 3DS cartridge hardware, but it seems like the obvious way to make an unblockable cartridge.
Future games could possibly potentially block themselves from being used on it if they had special crypto chips inside that would exchange random data verification info with the 3DS, but the 3DS itself might not be capable of doing that without yet another hardware revision.
We really don’t know. But from what it seems, Nintendo is really having a hard time about it.
Nintendo could block it long time ago.
