How would you all say Dynasty Warriors Next compares with Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends?

I got 8 on PC a while back, and enjoyed it for the most part (occasional finicky objective triggers aside), and I never really played it as much as I’d like to have. With Next on sale for the Vita, is it worth getting, or should I stick with 8? And if 8, is the Vita version as good as the PC version?
The main thing I’m worried about is combat complexity. I liked that 8 did have a rock-paper-scissors mechanic for bosses, but I especially liked that it wasn’t super important as long as you weren’t carrying two weapons that were both weak to the same thing, or if you were going for score runs.
To simplify, I guess I’m wondering if Next has a particularly higher skill requirement, since I tend to like more casual brawling/fighting games.

Another question is, how is the enemy count. 8 had absolutely ridiculous numbers of enemies, which was quite fun, does Next (and the vita version of 8) have similar enemy counts, or did they have to scale it down for the handheld?

One other thing I should ask, approximately what’s the balance of female/male characters in Next. 8 seemed to have a pretty decent selection of each, and I assume that Next does, but I figured I should ask to be sure.

don’t bother with NEXT unless you like using your touchscreen A LOT…. 8 is ok its the only psychical game I have but I couldn’t really get into it much for some reason compared to other Dynasty Warrior games I have played before but I think the being able to use any characters weapons is what ruined it for me as I think each character should only be able to use their unique weapons…..I would recommend just saving up for either Warriors Orochi 3 or Samurai Warriors 4

I haven’t played Next in a while, but it uses the DW7 movesets (maybe improved over DW7 XL? I don’t remember exactly) and costumes. The use of touch screen isn’t that bad. The main problem is dueling, which you can win if you only react to what your opponent is doing, instead of going all out attacking. There are a few different types of Musou attacks that will use the front and rear touch, but they aren’t a big deal, and you can still use the classic “push circle, things die” Musou attacks if you prefer. I thought it was a great package, but I can’t really compare it to DW8 XL.

Next is a mix of DW7XL and DW7E it seems, so it has less characters than 8 (there is not even Xu Shu that appeared first on DW7E), the game has some touchscreen mechanics, but you also have the standard gameplay, so I don’t think that’s bad nor good, there is a Demo if you want to check, though the demo is limited to Zhao Yun and ZhenJi.

I went to check some reviews to see how it works, it seems to have the Empires Create a Character Mode, and seems like its quests are based on Empires mode too, where you need to conquer all of China, with Empires style gameplay, but I have found nothing, so I guess its not present, anything about stratagems (They are not in the demo too, and they would have surely added it if they existed), so one of the best points of empires is not there.

I was pretty tempted to buy it now, but decided for a no, simply put, I have 8 Empires on PC which is great and can be modded, meanwhile this one would be great for a handheld DW game, but I already have other games to play on the Vita, so unless you don’t have any more games to play, don’t bother and/or wait for a better discount.

Oh, there is no JoKenPo system on 7, so the best way to do damage is to get a good elemental weapon, with Slash, Thunder, Fire or even Cyclone. There is no rage mode, and characters have only 2 musou, the normal one, and a new one based on the mechanics (Some may use the touchscreen, the back touchpad, or may just allow you to move, so they are basically weaker but more spread musou.

Character wise, the only females absent from this game compared to 8 would be Zhang Chunhua, Guan Yinping, Lu Lingqi (Yuanji is the only Jin Female), there are multiple males from all teams that are also absent, you need to check characters up to DW7XL to get the list.

This game fixes the weapons for all characters, so no dual weapon (Unlike DW7 that had dual weapons), and so, no way to use better weapons with certain characters because their moveset sucks.

          Thanks for the in-depth info.

Sounds like I’m going to be picking up 8 Empires on PC then. The custom characters and empire management sounded fun, but then I read the modding thread and holy wow, so much awesome stuff that can be done! Thanks again for the info! 😀

Is there a reason that The Amazing Spiderman is listed TWICE for PS3, once as Amazing Spiderman and second as The Amazing Spiderman?

    • Reprep says:

That is how it is listed on PSN Blog and i didn’t notice it. Yeah this reminds me that i shouldn’t trust Playstation Blog for listing Playstation games. LOL.
