How to: Play almost every multimedia file on your 3DS/NDS (by jokingley)
Note from Wololo: This tutorial was initially published by /Talk member jokingley, as part of our monthly tutorial contest. Jokingley won the best 3DS tutorial prize in December (a $10 PSN Code) for his entry. You can find the original post here.
Hi, in this tutorial I will show you how to use Moonshell which is a homebrew that will let you use a lot multimedia file formats on your Nintendo DS and your Nintendo 3DS.
The supported file formats are : MP1, MP2, MP3, OGG, WAV, M4A, AAC, WMA, TTA, MID, RCP, R36, FLAC, MOD, IT,MTM, S3M, XM, 669, MED, STM, AMF, GDM, ULT, UNI, ASY, IMF, OKT, STX, SPC, NSF, GBS, HES, AY, SAP, KSS, M3U et WPL, JPG, BMP, GIF, PNG et PSD, DPG, TXT.
Note : I have done this tutorial using a Nintendo DS but it will work the same way on a 3DS.

This Homebrew can only be used if you have a linker. To use Moonshell on your Nintendo DS, you must have:
- A linker
- A micro SD memory card
- A Nintendo DS
To install, download the latest version (download here).
You will then get a application file, open it, click OK, and then select your memory card to install on your memory card.
When done, remove your memory card from your computer, put it on your linker, and put it into your Nintendo DS. Then run the file Moonshell.nds from your linker. Now wait a few seconds and Moonshell will launch.
If this does not work, format your memory card in FAT format then try again.
To simplify things, I will divide multimedia file formats to four categories, and explain how to read each of them using an example for each type. The four classes are : videos, Sounds, Texts and Images. The examples will explain how to use for this file are examples and work the same way for the other types, they are: DPG for video, MP3 for sounds, TXT for text and JPG for images.
When you are on the file manager, and do not touch the touch screen, a window will appear showing the Moonshell options.
I suggest you copy the configurations in the following order : traced / clock image / 10 / show the ID3Tag of the MP3…
1)For videos
The videos works on Moonshell and for example let’s take DPG format.
When you put a video to DPG on memory card, you can play them on Moonshell. Then just choose the video file manager, relative to the position where you put it.
The video starts when you press the button A. From there, a multitude of options are available to you:
– You can move forward or backward by pressing the horizontal bar on the lower screen.
– You can increase or decrease the volume by pressing the vertical bar to the right on the lower screen, or press X to decrease or to increase Y.
– You can turn off the backlight on the lower screen by pressing the horizontal bar at the bottom on the lower screen.
– You can put pause, fast forward (also pressing the right arrow), Rear advance (by pressing the left arrow) is also on the lower screen.
– You can set if you want to play again (repeat) while play again (repeat all) or go to the next video randomly by pressing the left option “Stop”.
– If you click on the image of the light on the touch screen, the lighting will change if you are on a DSLite only.
– If you press twice successively on the button R, you will go to Next video .
– If you press twice successively on the button L, you will go to the Previous video.
– If you press the button B will return the file manager.
– If you press the button A, you will pause the video.
2)For sounds
Sounds operated in Moonshell are almost every format. As I stated, I show just how open and what options to an MP3, it is the same for the other formats.
In the file manager, click on the music of your choice, many options are available to you:
r + left / right: Rear-forward / fast forward
r + up / down: forward / fast back
r + a: play the files in the folder
l + r + a: play files from disk
l + r: pause
r + r some time: fast forward
r * 2: play the next file
r * 3: Standby
l + Left: launch the control panel (mp3 only)
l + right: play the next file
l + High: pause
l + bottom: change the play mode
l + a / b: play the next / previous file
l + x / y: Setting the backlight
l + l: flashback
l * 2: Play the previous file
x: increase volume
y: decrease volume
3)For texts
Moonshell may also prove to be an ebook reader but only for TXT format.
Options available to you:
A: Page Scrolling
B: Back
If you press SELECT, you can change options
If you press X, you can open the Bookmarks Backup Menu.
When accessed, press the slot to save your progress as you read.
If you press Y, the same menu opens, but to laod the Bookmark that you made.
4)For Images
Moonshell is also useful to read images. To do this, as previously, select the image the Moonshell file manager.
If you press the Start Button, the image becomes your background, if you press the SELECT Button, a menu where you can configure options appears, if you press the button Y display image becomes more global (zoom decreases); the opposite is true when you press the button A. Finally, if you press the button B, you return to the Moonshell file manager.
So Moonshell will allow you to launch a whole range of multimedia file formats that are very useful.
Enjoy.
Omg for once in my life I might have got first!!!
Only trolling good guide. Would love to watch videos on my 3ds
I love that it can play ripped video game music. It baffles my mind that someone would code that in.
What is a linker?
what’s a linker, is it a software or hardware device (ds card) and where can i get it?
A linker is the french expression for flashcard
I wouldn’t recommend moons heck for videos on 3Ds, because the quality is miserable. Even with highest transcoding settings the DS could handle, the colors are just weird (If I remember correctly it can handle max. 24bit color mode). The same applies for the soundquality too.
In a time when smartphones and tablets weren’t common, moonshell was a really nice application. Now it’s just a relict.
lmao no support for 1080p videos ?
Last time I used Moonshell, the program completely locked my SD card. I hope they fixed it ages ago. It’s still a pretty interesting program, but I would never watch videos on the DS.
