Just my 2 cents: Platform Exclusivity
Hello guys, I’m a seasoned and passionate gamer since the early 90s. I’m here to share my opinion and perspective about some aspects of gaming, the industry and its players, so please don’t flame me if you disagree, because remember: there is no right or wrong here, this is just my opinion.
As in with any business, every corporation tries to bring something unique to the game so it can attract a bigger chunk of the market share. In the world of console makers that would be, well, games.
Back in the NES era (mid to late 80s), Nintendo practically single-handedly saved the home videogame industry from its crash in 1983 by using some ingenious marketing to gain penetration and most importantly, exclusive games.

Nintendo created and destroyed many conventions in video gaming, from platformers to non-linearity and that was (and arguably still is) Nintendo magic: the power to invent and reinvent videogames and their IPs. Being a software developer as well as a hardware maker, you can understand that Nintendo use their IPs (like Mario, Zelda and Metroid) to sell their own consoles, but they took it even further…
Among other measures, Nintendo required third-party developers to launch games exclusively for the NES, trying keep their rivals (namely SEGA, at the time) from taking their market share. That kind of measure only benefits the hardware manufacturer, while developers could not broaden their demographics, players would be forced to buy a NES, even if the game they wanted to play wasn’t a Nintendo IP.
Fast Forward to 2010s, we still see this kind of things, and worse, we see players actually condoning this practice and thinking that it’s awesome that their console will have the new hottest game while their “rivals” don’t. As an avid fighting game enthusiast I can think about a recent example: Street Fighter V.
As many of you may have heard, SFV will only be launched on PS4 and PC, leaving XBone out. I’ve read on many forums and threads people bragging and laughing about XBOne adopters how they won’t be getting SFV while PS4 players will. All I can think about is how stupid it is, since not only they get no benefit from XBOne players not getting the game, it’s actually worse, because the community will be smaller, and the game will have less players, hence, less support and longevity.

And at the same time, all I can think is that XBOne players get to play the awesome Killer Instinct and I don’t for the same reasons. I’ve waited almost 20 years for this game and now I can’t play it because of Microsoft trying to push XBOne down our throats. The sad thing is that the thought of buying and XBOne just for that game actually crossed my mind.
I get that people will often try to rationalize their purchase choices so they can get most value for their money and that’s exactly what console manufacturers try to exploit, but in the end people condoning third-party exclusive are in fact shooting themselves in the foot because inexorably there will be a game they want and will be only available on another platform. Also, it’s a way to try cover the awful truth that videogame consoles are just underpowered easy-to-use computers that nowadays has actually almost no real difference between them at all.
I guess that my point is that we gamers often tend to see ourselves as XBox, Nintendo, Playstation or PC gamers and that just benefit them as corporations, not us as consumers. So, next time you are about to brag about your new game only available for your platform, remember that it’s not the interest of each platform group (PS4, Wii U, PC or XBOne) against each other, its the corporations interest against ours; so gamers UNITE!!!
tsriffffffffffffffff
This is why I have an Ouya…I want both the PS4 and the XBOX One, but could not bring myself to buy them both at their MSRP. I can afford it, but I’m cheap and I can’t rationalize purchasing a system so sandboxed to one brand clique or the other. So I got an Ouya and have been playing PS1, N64, SNES, Genesis, etc ROMS on the Ouya; because let’s be honest, Sony’s implementation of the PS1 system was to late on the PS3. By then I had a whole collection of games I had played, was playing or was to play on the Ouya. I’ll get them both, when both together equal the price of one alone at launch. Until then, I’ll work on my myriad of side projects, taking some time off to replay some golden classics of yore.
I really dont understand what your saying.
PS4 is the first system that cant play PS1 disc from day 1.
Since the first day i bought my ps3 the first silent hill has made regular appearances on the screen.
im sorry to say but the Ouya doesnt compare to a console or a pc,IF you are willing to pay more
for a budget system, its decent but when you have a higher budget, you might as well get a console or pc instead
android isnt a “gaming OS”(except for nvidia shield, thats an exception)
you might as well have bought a PC imho, you would have PS1 games at your fingertips and even DOS games + you could enjoy newer HD games as well
Nvidia shield does not run games, it needs a dedicated PC to run the game and stream it to the shield. That’s the only reason you can game on it like you can.
actually it does have the capability to run a few PC game ports
an example is Portal 2 and Half Life 2
http://shield.nvidia.com/android-game-portal-halflife2/
pretty impressive imho but still its game catalog is sadder than PS TV
rather get a Vita
C’mon. Do your research, mate. The PS2 allowed for PS1 compatibility, before the PS3, on disc-based games.
UNITE…let’s form like VOLTRON, I’ll be the head!
Call dibs on the Red Ranger, oh w8, Red Lion I mean. Ha!
Good write up 🙂
I might be wrong, but Killer Instinct on the XBone isn’t worth it because you have to buy many DLCs to have the full game (the characters)
Base KI is free. You can buy individual characters (there is a good reason for this) or you can buy a “pack” with a full season of characters.
If i were a game dev (probably in next couple years), i would allying myself to Sony out of fanboism :p
when i was like ten years old i would walk a mile to the game rental store and use a coupon to get a dollar off a two dollar nes game that i could play for a day and a half and then my dad would take the game away. I was sad and the worst part was nes games were like the hardest games to beat!
Don’t forget Xbox and taking Tomb Raider also.
Microsoft isnt pushing the Xbox One down your throat, some of us prefer pc,some prefer xbox, some prefer playstation
no one is forcing you to buy something you dont like, all 3 platforms are available for nearly the same price(you can get a decent pc for the same price, not a monster though)
anyways dont push your opinions out like that , it doesnt give you a good impression
He is not pushing his opinion on you and forcing you to buy said device XXX, he is stating a valid point.
For example almost all INSURANCE companies in the same country offer the same services, the only difference is actually the price.
They are not trying to kill each other off with “special service” exclusivities, they only try to catch bait with a complete package for xxx money.
Same goes for banks, all banks offer the same service, difference is price for fees and percentages for account handling, depositing…
Now on this market we have 4 giants which are (stupidly enough) TIRELESSLY trying to kill each other off. Either through exclusives or through aggressive advertisement campaigns or any other means holy to them.
They are steadily digging their own graves and undock themselves from all evolution that arises in the market. (PSVITA -> SMART PHONE or TABLET <- 3DS)
Not only those giants suffer but also the software companies providing said exclusives, they are basically cutting their own marge for well… a not nearly enough compensation from xxx said device/operating system maker.
Now take a look at the music market, do you see any exclusivities there? One service carrying an album another does not? (itunes/amazon/playstore/…)
I have not seen exclusivities there, all albums are available via cd and more and more ship to all services as digital download.
I read that somewhere once, a small but funny anecdote regarding a weapons dealer.
"You don't sell to one side, you always sell to all parties involved. Optimizes your marge and you can't be extorted."
But I guess it will take another 5-10 years until those giant have either fallen or understood that they actually sell services and should focus on competitive pricing instead of service exclusivity.
Actually, some exclusives exist with music.
iTunes, spotify, beats and google play have albums and songs that the others don’t
“understood that they actually sell services and should focus on competitive pricing instead of service exclusivity.”
Valve understood that.
shape, this is a good example of an op-ed article, the article is intended to share someones opinion.
I actually enjoyed this article, and hope to see more like this in the future.
no you guys misunderstood
xbox one could have a self destruct mechanism to go bad within 6 months if it wanted and if it had it written in BOLD letters on the box and it would still be wrong to say Microsoft is pushing it down his throat
I quit consoes after PS3/360 because my PC does so much more. I don’t have to buy a whole new console because a grimy companys drop inernet support. When offcial servers close, most games have mp alternatives, and I can play current gen games. Not to mention prices, PC deals are really good, and 3rd party peripherals don’t cost an arm and a leg. Curent gen conoles are just now displaying at 1080 and my PC has done that and then some for years.
Recently launched games doesn’t have price cuts until they are old and with peripherals you always have alternatives.
Anyways… seems somewhat valid, but what happen with the exclusives, or delays (GTA V)?
The PS3 may have cost $700 back in the day, but compared to my $2500 PC I bought at the same time the PS3 is still getting played today and still enjoys online access. The PC on the other hand is probably rotting somewhere in dump.
“it’s actually worse, because the community will be smaller, and the game will have less players, hence, less support and longevity.”
-I will say that this is not entirely true. If the fan base of a game, especially a fighting game, gets a game, it is divided by default amongst all the platforms it launches on.
In SFV’s case, PC/PS4 are cross play. This means, the game is likely to have a larger sample of players that can crossplay together.
And you don’t have to worry which unit to buy to play with friends or tournaments or whatever. You can still play with each other.
Yea his examples and reasoning is just not well thought out. For SFV there might not be as much sales if it was also on xbone but the player base is actually gonna be larger than that of SFIV. Unifying the player bases of both Playstation and PC into one creating a much larger pool of players. The tournament players will be there regardless of which system it’s on.
Then there is Killer Instinct which is a Microsoft owned IP b/c they had bought Rare back then. That’s like getting mad that Halo won’t be coming to Playstation.
Besides Exclusives are actually good for the industry. The only type that is bad is when a company only pays to keep it off of a competitors platform instead of paying to help develop it. This usally happens with timed exclusivity and rarely does it happen with lifetime exclusivity.
Not to mention if console manufactures help pay for development then that game will actually come out instead of it either getting put aside for years or just never ends up being made. Take Bayonetta 2, if Nintendo didn’t step in to help fit the bill then the game doesn’t ever see the light of day. SFV probably would have been made but by Sony stepping in the development priority jumped up several years as Capcom is in a very bad place financially right now.
fighting games are more enjoyable at the arcades than on console or pc
this is why i don’t brother with it.
personally, i didn’t care if Killer Instinct will come out, but nothing probably could beat teh classic SNES version of the game.
and as for SFV being exclusives to PS4 and Killer Instinct being exclusives to M$ is because you’re overlooking something else. M$ bought out the company whose licenses includes Killer Instinct, so of course they’ll make it exclusives to Xbone and probably PC. Beside, i doubt i go stright for the exclusives, because not all exclusives are made evenly
but the bigger issues is this: M$ already paying a license fee to $ony for the BD technology in their consoles. and personally, i avoid M$’s Xbone for two reasons: overpriced accessories and so many things you’re already paying for behind the fees wall. but now, M$ already decides that you won’t need Live Gold membership to access those services you’re already paying for. to me, that too little too late.
here are some history of their blunder:
Xbox = requires DVD bundles to unlock DVD movie playback
Xbox 360 = requires Xbox Live Gold to access Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Amazon Prime
Xbox One = still overprices accessories and too many ports
then, if you look at their naming sense, it almost like…
Xbox = Xbox Alpha
Xbox 360 = Xbox Beta
Xbox One = Xbox v1
The difference between SFV and Killer Instinct, is that SF V is a 3rd party exclusive, MS wholly owns Rare thus the Killer Instinct franchise, making it first party software.
I still say exclusives are necessary, within reason. There’s jerks in any console stable who’ll tease the others about X game or Y capability, but console exclusives means relevance and healthy economic competition (again, within reason). Also, not everyone has a good computer, or a computer period, so keep in mind that even a cheap PC with decent specs might still cost more than a console.
Sure, a person might not get a game on their system. Happens to me a lot. But non-malicious exclusivity is not anti-consumer.
