KaKaRoTo releases PS3xport, lets you encrypt/decrypt full content of PS3 Hard drive backups
PS3 developer KaKaRoTo formally leaves the PS3 scene this week, after several months of silence. As a farewell gift, he released ps3xport.
KaKaRoTo had been working on a homebrew enabler for the PS3 that never saw the light of day, but in the process of reverse engineering some of the PS3 firmware, he created ps3xport, a tool that lets you manipulate PS3 backups.
We’re talking of “full” backups here, the ones the PS3 lets you do to save your precious data, or that you can use when replacing your PS3’s hard drive. The same backups that you cannot easily transfer from one PS3 to another, even with the same account.
The tool lets you manipulate backup data, including reading from one, creating a new backup folder, deleting files from it, etc… among other things, this lets you restore (to the same account) from one ps3 to another, assuming you know your IDPS – I assume for each console – (each PS3 has a unique identifier, the IDPS. This value can easily be acquired if you have a CFW with Multiman. It is not publicly known at this moment how to retrieve this value from a PS3 running OFW)
As KaKaRoTo mentions, this is linux only for now, and is missing some features, but the whole thing is open source, and can be reused by other devs who will hopefully improve it.
Last but not least, it is likely that this tool lets you do more than meets the eye…

I will like to see a hack on vita that allow us to play ps3 downloaded content that is not on vita store,i mean,SJ Origins is not on vita store but it is on ps3,i have lose all my vita games testing that and even if i made it work im mad about that,so in order to play ps3 psp games i need to erase all my memory card and use ps3 account.Please someone work on that please,i bought the game it is stupid from them to make us buy another expensive card.

If you are using an ODE you can dump your IDPS, look for Cobra ODE IDPS Dumper or 3k3y IDPS Dumper

I meaning. I take out Ps3 HardDrive. Insert it with USB SATA Adapter to a computer and copy games through USB computer directly to PS3 HDD or through SATA computer.
Because I got a 1TB HDD into my PS3. And it’s really hard to copy files through USB 2.0 ( 30MB/s) I wanted to copy through USB 3.0 or Sata ( 99mb/s)

Try to copy via Ethernet cable and ftp. Since PS3 has Gigabit Ethernet, you can reach up to 125MB/s that way (in theory).
This could prove useful to gamers like me that still have their old PS3 60gb version that nearly everyone had a light/blue/red screen of death issues after a while of using it.. something that had to do with the glue in the PS3 wearing away due to heat that causes it to malfunction. So if I can do full back ups regularly, I don’t have to worry about losing data.. The problem could be fixed easily thanks to some PS3 mod hobbyists out there though, but I think it’d not be cheap to fix.. My BC 60 gb PS3 still works great 100%, just have to make sure not to leave it on too long or play it during the heat of summer or something.. Anyway great article, wololo thanks for letting us know about this release from Kakaroto. Pretty awesome stuff..
Take apart your old PS3, clean the dust out of every single spot, put new arctic silver 7 thermal paste on the heat sincks and cpu/gpu and you’ll never have to worry about it over heating.
This is big we could even trick the ps vita in more ways than one to transfer content to it then using cfw to add and remove ps vita games within it. Yay won’t be a dream even for console that doesnt have cfw they would have to just use someone else’s backup.

They are people asking too much of this scene. Its hard for PS3,PS4 and PSVita Developers to do a CFW due to the high encription of the (I think) lvl 1 and also to the fact that if they release any CFW for the mention consoles, they get hunted like world class criminals, remember guys what happen to Grafchokolo when he was dragged out of his home

If only there was something for Vita to allow backup and restore of PSN game saves only (rather than the whole game+save backup, wasting hours and gigabytes on what should be taking seconds and megabytes instead)…
