PSM SDK 2.0 and Unity for PSM coming this summer!
If you’ve been following this site for a long time you’ve probably realized that I love talking about PlayStation Mobile, PlayStation’s mobile publishing platform for indie game developers. Although they did discontinue scoreboard support, other much cooler things have been going on. A Unity for PSM is now available along with PSM SDK 2.0 which allows PSM developers to do the one thing they’ve always asked for – take advantage of the Vita’s hardware to develop specifically for the PS Vita and the PlayStation TV.
The new SDK was just released today and since PSM’s free licence offer is still on, you can get the SDK here. As we all know, the Vita has become more of an indie device rather than the portable PS3 experience we were all expecting at the start. As such, this release should invite even more developers to the device more so because Unity-based games can be ported to the platform with almost no work whatsoever.
From a developer’s point of view, the new PSM SDK offers a lot more power than previous versions. The amount of graphics memory available is now 96MiB which is approximately 3/4 the total VRAM available on the Vita, the rear touch pad can now be accessed which was one of the most requested features when the SDK launched almost a year and a half ago.
So how does this effect developers? PSVita and PlayStation TV exclusivity means that developers are no longer bound by the restrictions imposed by the need for the game to run on the weakest supported device. Also, since Developers only have to focus on supporting the Vita and the PS TV they have incentive to make better use of the Vita and it’s input methods.
Hopefully, with this we’ll get to see some of the more prominent indie titles being brought over and an increase in interest in developing for the PSVita.
You better make PSM world wide first
Expect to see a lot of iOS and Android ports on Vita soon.
I don’t think that we will.
However with Unity being built-in we might see games like Slender, etc. Appearing for the PS Vita more so than the ultimately boring (At leased to me) Candy Crush Saga, etc, etc.
I could see more game coming like Wonder Flick, Puzzle and Dragonz or etc. I have been fiddling/tampering with a few android titles, mostly using Unity as their engine.
free dev license = it’s worth trying.
but is not able able us account
Been done took advantage of this since the public preview, I havent been active on the site because i’m working on the first zombie fps game for Vita and pushing the Playstation Mobile graphics to the limit
Maybe now that they’ve given us a bigger SDK to work with some developers can kindly leave a few glitches in their code so we can exploit them. ^.- Really kidding, no clue how that would work.
Not enough freedom to work around I guess (?)
Like I don’t think you could make a game like Golden Abyss or WipEout 2048 in the first place so…?
I’m not entirely sure tho
Yes, you can even make an AAA game out of this. Sony has made an huge move with this!
So Sony didn’t want the PS Vita to be an indie console, but after they failed porting many AAA titles & the Vita started dying, they decided to update the PSM SDK & try making it an indie device.
when did sony say that it did not want the vita to be an indie device?
Well, with the obvious lack of support for PSM so far (until this announcement?), I think NNNRT’s point is valid.
The question becomes “who will buy more than one or two of these PSM titles, when they’re sold at two to ten times their price on any other device?”
I already own an android phone and iPod Touch and Kindle Fire; hopefully I’m wrong, but I believe that games with the same pricing on PSM and Google Play are the exception rather than the rule. (I did however just check Chaos Rings, since I figured it would be ridiculous since it was already pricey on mobile, and it’s still 7.99 so hopefully that is true of most of the “better” PSM games)
Most PSM games are actually at a reasonable price since Sony’s own takes from the sales aren’t as high and there is no cost for the SDK. Native Vita ports are usually expensive because of the devkit cost and I think Sony’s portion is a bit higher.
Nice! I’m looking forward to this 🙂
I really do hope either ARK or TN-V eCFW or both find their way to the ps vita ofw 3.15!
I’m not a developer and far from understanding what PSM can really do, and Unity to be honest. However, I think we might just be able to get hidden* emulators on to the store, exactly like the Baby Names app for iOS which happened to contain a GBA emulator by using a secret code (of arrows?) to get into it which was later removed. As for ROMs I’m really not sure how that’ll work but I’m sure something could work linking that emulator to a Google Drive (Or Dropbox) account and automatically run the ROM from there.
That is if Sony doesn’t check the app thoroughly….
They actually don’t check very thoroughly but one of their terms states that no hidden features are allowed, additionally, they would probably notice that there’s way too much code for an app that’s only supposed to be a text editor (for example)
Hopefully this might result in some good Playstation Mobile games.
Just tried: awesomeness averywhere. I just ported some of basic Unity scripts to work with PS Vita (Movement and Camera Rotation with the two sticks, FPS-like), just ask here if you need them. Got to try a bit to make them work. Possibilities for games are now “unlimited”, meaning that every game we want can be made, and even an AAA game can be made out of this. The only limit is the sky(?!?) or maybe just ps vita specs. What could I say? I think we’ll get a LOT of new games from now, and I think I will develop my new game exclusively for PS Vita.
Thank you Wololo and who wrote this for letting me know about this!
Can you port android decompiled games to the vita that way?
Like smash hit or N.O.V.A.?
You can directly port only Unity made games, the only changes to make to these games are the way control works, and Graphics adaption. But think about games like Starforge, on steam, that is made with Unity: Adjust controls and Graphics, and you can run the game on psvita without editing a single line of code!
But can you write me a toutorial on how to port the vita controls to a ready pc, android or mabye other console unity games?
And for the graphic adaptation
And can you give me these scrips + the touchscreen scrips and other button scrips or I am asking too much.
It was hard the first time I tried to setup the right stick but not now it’s all done in the input manager
Actually I have made it almost all by code, using Sony’s references.
At the moment i’m still porting these scripts. You can find me over ratchet97franco@gmail.com or http://www.digitaldreamers.tk, everyone can feel free to contact me, ask what you want.
Me puedes enseñar una imagen de tu juego simplemente para saber como es,la verdad que te deseo lo mejor en el juego.Ojala tenga unos graficos buenos vamos si esta bien compra FIJA
Lol, could you please write that in English? Or in Italian? I Know only these languages! XP
Can you show me a picture of your game just to know what the truth that I wish you well in juego.Ojala have a good graphics if well we will purchase FIXED excuse me not speak English is the translator of the internet: P
I’m making a Crash Bandicoot demo at the moment, just to test how this works. Check later today to see some screens /photos of My vita running it!
I guess that means we can start getting unity games like some of the ones PewDiePie and Markiplier play.
Crosses fingers for a DQVIII port ;D
You also forgot they implemented the back touch screen
Nvm overead
last 1.xx sdk studio UI (GTK) was buggy as ***, it keeps dissapearing on me.
sdk 2.0 fixed it for me.
Crossed finger for dead trigger *-*
Hopefully this opens the door to exploits also
No, sadly
