Sony to cease PSP production Worldwide, starting next month.
Sony has finally stated that it will discontinue the PSPs’ production starting from next month.
As I mentioned in my previous blog post, the PSP first officially launched in December 12, 2004 in Japan. It was then released in North America and Europe later on in the following year. The PSP go first launched in 2009, but officially stopped its production quite early around 2011. The PSP E1000 launched in October 2011, which was a budget-focused model of the PSP, but it seems all of them are going to end their production. The company has announced that Sony will ship its last set of PSPs’ in Japan next month. The company also stated that it will be offering Japanese users a discount on Vita products if they trade in their PSPs.
Although it didn’t quite become as successful as its competitor (The Nintendo DS), it still managed to sell 80 million units worldwide since it went on sale 10 years ago.
Just because they’re stopping production doesn’t mean the PSP scene’s also gonna stop its production. We’re still kicking, and providing as much as possible! Be sure to check out my previous article to have a look at what’s going on in the PSP homebrew scene today. After all some people are still working on PS1 so why not?
It’s quite odd that Sony doesn’t want the PSP to live alongside the Vita anymore, but oddly wants the PS3 to live next to the PS4. Oh well it’s seems they’ve made they’re final decision. Europe has also stated it’ll cease its production at some point this year.
*sobs uncontrollably*
Looks like I need to buy a new PSP if they’re canceling them. I wouldn’t wasn’t to be left with the scratched up, beat up one I have now, even though we’ve had so many good times together.
why don’t you just put it a new shell, its quite easy to do. unless you want a reason to buy a new PSP then by all means go ahead
You, sir, have inspired me.
I did some googling, and instead of buying a new shell or a new PSP, I will fix the 2 problems that most bother me and call it a day. I will sand the scratches out of the screen and buy a high-capacity battery.
Thank you, sir, and may you live long and not die in a hole.
polish*
polish the scratches out of the screen*
Not sand.
Unless sanding would work…
*google*
Hello,

You. I like you.
Thanks, taps.
I wonder what will they do with the trade-ins units they get…
That’s exactly what I was wondering, I hope they don’t get rid of them or anything. They might just send it in to some tech stores for sale, idk.
It’s not like there’s new game for PSP anyway
(Still waiting for sol trigger english patch)
We all knew this was coming at some point, but I was hoping that it would be sometime next year. Oh well, at least the vita can play PSP games.
SOME PSP GAMES NOT ALL LIKE THE PSP DOES :[
Oh right, I don’t have a vita so I didn’t know about that. Can’t you play them through tn-v though?
YESSSSSSSSS
The problem right now is, you can’t play your back-ups on the latest firmware, so 3.01 for old PSP games OR, 3.15 for PSN Access and some of the latest vita games.
So its the end of one great psp era, hacking community will never give up, in our hearts psp is legend and one of the best(if not best) handheld system… long live psp xD
+1 🙂
agreed
whats next playstation mobiles ?
i wonder why they havent kept the psp go as the new model for kids toys 😀
Same System as the PSP – wats the point?
im kind of wondering what the next vita might look and be like maybe internal memory??? who really knows but this is kind of the fun of all this hopefully the keep in the portable game should be a fun ride in the next few years. We all will be watching you Sony so don’t let us down : )
the better handled video console game forever in the history of Sony, after of course the legendaries PS1 and PS2. While the nintendos ds, dsi XL and 3d XL was ***
Lol the Ds was okay, I just don’t like how Nintendo doesn’t upgrade their hardware like Microsoft and Sony does.
Lots of fun times and More to come…
I Love my PSP and i’ve got lots other games i need to finish playing 🙂 I just hope that in the near future psvita will get more games befitting it and will (hopefully) get hacked…still the PSP remains the One for me at the present… 🙂
This is sad news for the PSP, it had a great run. I am glad to own two of these units. A original PSP phat, and at 3000 series. Both have given me many hours of gaming and are still used as much as my vita’s if not more. I sure would not trade in my PSP for a discount on a Vita. Both of my Vita’s i have bought used and gotten a better deal than new. Half the cost of new with games.
The PSP can do so much more than the vita, think of all those PS one games with sound, emulators, PSP games. It is the best portable gaming device ever, period!
The Vita is more powerful, touch screen, oled or lcd, dual analog, better wifi and online, but it dont have the popularity, line up of AAA games, PSX compatibility and history the PSP has given us over the years.
I am glad to own a PSP, and wont sell or trade it. Last going off i have seen them new on clearance at Bestbuy and other stores for $50. I picked up a few and gave them to a few nephews. They really enjoyed them.
PSP you will be missed, Sony do for the Vita what you done for the PSP, dont let it die a slow death. Such a powerful system and you wont make any AAA games. the Vita is great, but if someone asked me what is the greatest handheld of all time, it has to be the PSP!!
This is why we need an upvote system. 🙂
You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Sony thinks like that they will increase the Vita sales. They won’t, the PSP is what made people buy their Vitas. Now people won’t buy the PSP nor the Vita. Let them learn from their stupid decisions. Like they want the iOS-like Vita to be more popular than the Android-like PSP. Lol
Its not really that odd that Sony don’t want the PSP along side the PSVita but wants the PS3 next to the PS4…. The Vita can play PSP games so you can still get access to the games you want (maybe not all but most anyway) whereas the PS4 can’t play PS3 games natively
But it doesn’t play all the PSP games.
Well PS4 won’t be playing any PS3 games till Gaikai comes out for it.
PS3 is still making them money.
PSP might be losing them money, at least if they kept producing them.
10th anniversary edition would be nice, I would want one just for keep sake. I have lots of memories and still use my psp go every day, I also still have my first psp 1000 from 2005 in perfect working condition.
Psp, you will be missed. Goodbye old friend.
tis a sad sad day… i miss this system. was there when it all started. helped people understand the steps to making your own pandora stick, co created th universal pandora memory stick (UPMS) was always helping others with hacking problems. i was big in the scene and alas forgotten but i am not upset about it. it was a relief to not get any emails asking for so much help. i tried etting into the vita but it wasnt the same as the psp. i had fun with the psp as the vita was more along the lines of hmm i wonder how this works. from fanjita to darkalex to total noob ( and all the other great coders and developers) the psp will forever be my favorite portable system. PSP you shall always be an icon
Keep your old PSP who knows one day this will be a collectors item treasure a vintage gaming device that will be more valuable than the PS4.
NOOOOOOOOOOOO 🙁
I am kissing my PSP with tears now.
you were always there for me.
LONG LIVE THE PSP
