PS4 Launching in China Soon. Small Steps for Consumer Freedom.
Sony just confirmed today that the PlayStation 4 will be heading to China.
China banned videogame consoles back in 2000 for the sake of “mental well-being”, “moral decay” and to protect children from “perception of corruption”. China has been a known stickler when it comes to videogames. Xinhua, the State Press Agency of the People’s Republic of China reported console games as “threatening state security, damaging the nation’s glory, disturbing social order and infringing on others’ legitimate rights”. There is a yet-to-be fixed stigma when it comes to certain entertainment media in China. This stigma isn’t uncommon in other parts of the world. China isn’t the only country to denounce videogames. In fact a lot of Eastern countries have actually imposed restrictions, curfews and classification screenings but the almost 14 year ban has been widely seen as the most illogical and unreasonable.
China is a huge potential market for gaming consoles with over $13 billion in gaming revenue made across PC, online and mobile games. Over the years the ban hasn’t stopped bootleg consoles, knock-offs and cheap plug-and-play consoles from entering the lower market but Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo haven’t been able to enter the Chinese market legally. Finally, the ban was overturned late in October of last year albeit still with some catches and rules with the new market opening.
It has been unclear when official consoles would enter the market after the ban lift, but Microsoft recently announced that the Xbox One would release in September via company BesTV. And today, Sony announced that the PS4 would finally make a debut in China soon. The official release window and price is yet to be announced. Sony will be teaming up with Chinese company, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Culture Development, to oversee the manufacturing process locally in China as well as sales, licensing and distribution. You can probably expect details on the marketing plan soon for both consoles. Considering the circumstances, I wouldn’t expect a price that’s comparable to the MSRP in markets outside of China for either consoles. With import, production, review and marketing issues you can most likely expect a higher price.
Both companies will be working under the Shanghai Free Trade Zone. The overturn and eventual market entry for Microsoft and Sony is a step in the right direction for consumer freedom but you can still expect Chinese authorities to censor anything and everything when it comes to software and content released on both platforms. China has the final say-so on content and with their multiple outcries (such as with BF4) it doesn’t seem like that will change. China drew up plans on censoring console games awhile back. Games have to be approved and any DLC or updates have to approved too. The following content will warrant a game to not pass inspection:
- Gambling-related content or game features
- Anything that violates China’s constitution
- Anything that threatens China’s national unity, sovereignty, or territorial integrity.
- Anything that harms the nation’s reputation, security, or interests.
- Anything that instigates racial/ethnic hatred, or harms ethnic traditions and cultures.
- Anything that violates China’s policy on religion by promoting cults or superstitions.
- Anything that promotes or incites obscenity, drug use, violence, or gambling.
- Anything that harms public ethics or China’s culture and traditions.
- Anything that insults, slanders, or violates the rights of others.
- Other content that violates the law
So basically everything.
Small steps forward are better than no progress at all when it comes to complete consumer freedom in China. China progressively needs to catch up with the rest of the world though, and fast. There is no reason in today’s day and age to have any kind of restriction on entertainment, art, outside media and fictional works.
I am living in China now, and I have already had a PS4(illegal not far earlier, though), I don’t think it will be affordable to a lot of people because of the heavy tax being attached to its price, nor will hot games like BF4 and GTA will be able to pass the censorship by the ministry of culture.but, still looking forward to having a legal approach to game consoles,at least a better network and smaller time lag.
China just needs a revolution to overthrow that over controlling government. NO government should have that much power over the people.
China has over 1.5… Or is it 2 BILLION people. Overthrow the military, government, and put in a new one
Only sad part is a lot of ppl would die … But if I lived there, I’d fight for my freedom
China also blocks 1/2 the Internet sites in the world (easily bypassed with vpn)
They just need elections, term limits etc so the same ppl can’t stay in power
That’s amazing news. And sure, there’s a lot of restrictions, but those will be taken down sooner or later. In the meantime, I’m sure that the gamers in China will get their hands on those games one way or another.
I an a Chinese and I think its a good thing 4 CHN players, however the ps4&games may not that cheap lol
Whilst the requirements for a game to be approved are very harsh I don’t think they’re totally unjust. Say what you will but Western games are too lax in content control. Hopefully developers will pull the reigns in a bit on pushing graphic violence and controversial content if only to tap this newly emerging billion person market.
Guys there not gonna get the same ps4 that we have the ablity to get. It will be something made on there soil from there parts built there by them. It probably wont even recive the same software and updates as the ones already out. I ran into the same thing when I was working in a medical company. They wanted to make and sell there product in china but they couldn’t. The Chinese govt has controll of what goes on over there and it could be awesome for us if they did get the same thing as us but I wouldnt count on it
Is there a difference when all PS4’s a primarily built by Foxconn?
oh pieces of cake to grab!
expect game developers self censor and cut game content and features with those rules in mind even for non china versions to save money on developing a different china friendly one while producing the game
With the ridiculous restraints, I doubt many games will cut stuff befor the transfer… No one else in the world would buy them. I expect math blaster and lots of art games to be made world wide now.
1. there are a large amount of core users (but considering to population , the proportion is relatively small) in china , but it;s not cu who can save the market. light users do . However light users in china prefer free pirated copies to legal copies. they prefer free download with IAP to a full-version,no IAP game. It;s tough to make em spend money on console games.
2. censorship in china is really annoying . maybe someday the authority will even ban mario , for BOWSER&DK are naked in the game . i wonder what kind of game could be released.
3. i cant find any difference between 10yrs ago(sony released PS2 50009 in china) and now. some users in china are overoptimistic.
Nintendo gonna win now tbh
Then again Chinese civilians mite buy 7th gen hacked console and pirate with it
who deleted all the comments that were here a few hours ago? is this china?
nevermind they showed up again 😀
