RetroArch – A Multi-System Emulator making its way onto the PSP
RetroArch is an open source, multi-platform frontend designed to be a fast, lightweight, and portable multi-system emulator.
RetroArch is currently available for Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, BlackBerry 10, Raspberry Pi, OpenPandora, PlayStation 3, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, and Nintendo Wii, and soon the PSP. A few months ago (February 12th), the RetroArch team tweeted that they have “wiped the dust off the RetroArch PSP port“ and started development to bring the multi-system emulator to the PSP. On the 13th of February, they tweeted a picture with the description below:

“Progress being made,” by the RetroArch team.
That same day they also mentioned something else:
Something else we’ve dusted off from over a year ago – a RemoteJoy libretro core.
On the 16th of February (My birthday :p), they posted yet another picture entitled “Progress being made”:

“Progress being made,” by the RetroArch team.
From the pictures we can see that they are making some sweet progress after all J
A few days ago (24th May) they made a blog post about their incoming update, v1.0.0.3. This is what they’ve mentioned about the PSP port:
So it’s been no secret that we have been working on a PSP port of RetroArch for quite some months now. Obviously, this right now is the least powerful RetroArch port so far (in terms of CPU power it is about half the speed of a Raspberry Pi), but we’re still striving to make RetroArch a really nice affair on the PSP.
We will need more time to really deliver though when it comes to the cores. Thanks to the great commits of Aliaspider, we have already managed to achieve fullspeed emulation with Gambatte (at the very least), and through some custom PSP code we have also managed to get FCEUmm to run more or les at fullspeed on the PSP as well. It’s up for debate whether we will want to whip out a version of RetroArch PSP in time for version 1.0.0.3 – maybe we should wait until we have more cores behind our belt that are really appealing to PSP users, or maybe we should just get this into PSP users’ hands as quickly as possible and then supply them with lots of regular updates with each new version.
I have some plans at least to look at every great standalone PSP port and deliver a libretro port in some way. At least NJEMU (the CPS1/2/Neogeo emulator) is being strongly considered. Maybe Daedalusx64 at some point as well.
I for one, am pretty excited to see this coming to PSP. We all thought the PSP scene was long gone, once the Vita came out. Haha but it seems like the PSP devs haven’t given up just yet. Be sure to check out their twitter or their blog, for upcoming updates.
I kinda hope there’s a Genesis/MD core when RetroArch for PSP comes out. Picodrive serves me well except for one particular Sonic ROM hack that happens to be my favorite one.
Mednafen or Retroarch T____T?!?!
@ChrisHighWind
RetroArch uses Picodrive’s core on PSP
Problem with hacks is that they were made with inaccurate emulators, they won’t run as a real cartridge or in accurate emulators
whoa, if they can make adhoc 2 players via wi-fi for the games with 2 player co-op (like gryzor) that will be awesome !! 🙂 just hoping
I’m hoping for that too 🙂 Playing Pokemon via ad-hoc multiplayer would be awesome haha.
It wouldn’t be that far fetched for GB/GBC and maybe MD. Snes9xTYL(me)mc already supports ad hoc play for SNES games, though.
Well, Vita scene is pretty much non-existent compared to old PSP scene and all Vita homebrew runs in PSP sandbox anyway, so whu would it be gone?
Some people believe the psp scene is dead, since it’s so old haha. And there are others who want it dead, so that the Vita can get more attention..
I can see both points, and the validity of each. But personally I’d like to see the PSP scene continue on, as long as it’s technically capable of keeping up to a respectable extent. And I think it is.
Same with me here. The PSP has one of the greatest console development scenes ever. People have put a lot of effort into make it what it is now.
Will This have virtual boy support?
The information is very limited, we should wait till the release 🙂
Nice! If they could emulate gameboy link cable it would be very very awesome, there would be no need to transfer my pokemon using PC 😀
masterboy/emumaster?
I wouldn’t be surprised for the PSP scene to stick around like the Dreamcast scene does. It’s the first handheld to really be blown wide open like that that doesn’t require any specialized hardware. Sure, most phones anymore are more powerful, but few of them have controls that feel as good as the PSP. There will still be people that carry around a PSP for emulation and whatever they feel like. The PS Vita might be a successor for homebrewing, but I have a feeling it won’t be until towards the end of its official lifespan.
This site is completely gret. I’ve researched these details a whole lot and I view it
that is good written, easy to understand. I congratulate
you because of this research that I am going to recommend
to people around. I request you to visit the gpa-calculator.co page where each
college student or learner can find results grade point average marks.
Be great!
