PSVita Koala region bypass “hack” – Why we haven’t talked about it yet
The vita scene’s been boiling today, reaching levels of religious crusade between some veteran devs/mods of our own website, and the new team in town, team Koala.
Team Koala has come up with a way to let people install “region locked” applications such as Netflix on accounts that are not supposed to let them run, such as a Japanese account being able to install and run Netflix on the Vita. Pretty convenient for those of us who, for example, imported a vitaTV (which is locked to a Japanese account) and would love to get Netflix on it.
People later on got shocked that we didn’t publish anything about this thing yet, when every other scene site has talked about it by now. It even got worse afterwards:
still not any post or news at wololo #sadface #irony <3

http://t.co/Pxw1qMLP2V became the most stupid forum EVER. http://t.co/igFNoFaznl. well i just tweeted full games working on my account…

Don’t get me wrong, some of the mods here at wololo.net are pretty tough when it comes to claims like this: we’ve been debunking fakes for years now, and some of us have probably become aggressive over time in their search for the truth.
@KoalaVita if you’re a real hacker show me unsigned code running, not glitches and bugs that everyone knows about
— Acid_Snake (@AcidSnakeDev) May 5, 2014
So let’s set things straight:
- We at wololo.net are not saying the “hack” isn’t true. Several of us have actually been able to reproduce it fairly easily on our end, so we can actually confirm this: there exist easy ways to install free apps such as Netflix on a Japanese account, or free JP apps on a non Japanese account, as revealed by the Koala team. What we are not agreeing with however, is calling this a “hack”. In particular, the overall usefulness of this is debatable, but I’ll get to this in a moment
- The mods, bloggers, members of the community here are entitled to their own opinion. When, for example (I swear it’s a random example) Acid_Snake calls you names, he is using his freedom of speech and does not represent this site’s opinion in general, or my opinion in particular. I usually give people the benefit of the doubt. However, in my experience, people who have a real hack in their possession are able to explain it cleverly and calmly, even when their opponents are aggressive. I must say I haven’t seen that from Koala’s team so far.
We have an article ready that explains the whole process, as we believe the Koala team has done it. We believe this trick will only let people install a very limited subset of free apps and demos (Netflix, JP eReader,…), which, really, besides the excitement of tricking the console, and the possibility to install Netflix on a vitaTV, is not going to be extremely useful. I, for one, believe the “Netflix on Vita TV” thing is awesome enough that it deserves an article on its own, but I would not call this a groundbreaking hack.
The thing is, hackers on the Vita scene have known about this kind of trick for a while, and there are good reasons they do not brag about it: they think it is useless in itself, but could be useful as part of a bigger thing.
In particular, we believe this trick cannot be used to pirate commercial games, or run unsigned content (homebrews)
One of the members of the Koala team has contacted me to tell me the statement above is false, and that their technique indeed lets them run commercial games on PSN accounts that haven’t purchased the game. This would be a whole different story, and I have accepted to become a tester for that. At the time of this writing, I am waiting for them to contact me about the testing.
If Koala’s team statement above is true, we are talking of something of epic proportions. (Note that I’m not saying it’s necessarily good)
This is why I am holding on on publishing our article explaining the Netflix trick, as I am giving the Koala team the benefit of the doubt. To be perfectly honest though, the general atmosphere on this side of the scene is that this is just the simple trick we’ve been able to reproduce independently (Which, again, is still cool, but not revolutionary), and that the claim of “running commercial games” will prove to be false.
I would be happy if i could simply test japanese game demos which take months to come to the west, if they come.
For that it is more straightforward to just create a japanese account, you dont need any hack.
But you know the pain in the 4ZZ that is change accounts on PSVITA… if this process could be simplified, many players would be happy!
buy a 2nd small and cheap memory card for that…
Even with another memory card (which I have) it still a pain in the ***. Especially since everything damn setting and app layout on the vita gets sc***.
I would this method to:
1st – use jp demos on my EU account
2nd – purchase games on US psn and play them on may EU account — this is essentially true for psp/psv games that are much cheaper on US psn
every*
‘I would use this method to:’***
Tom Blitz linked to JP acc (from years ago), still works till now.
i can still restore it even without opencma.

it’s looks like you need to supply username and password to the hacker.
I wouldn’t mind a region bypass trick to let me play my UK PSN’s legally purchased games on my R1 account.
region bypass only allow drm free app
This would be great, not because of pirate but region locks.
People always say *** like “Nintendo is evil, they do region lock on 3DS, but SONY is good, no region lock on Vita”.
Yes, no region lock on game cartridge ONLY.
I got all my games on US account and now I bought a Japanese game, can’t get DLC, can’t use preorder bonus codes, can’t redeem online passes…and people call it “NO REGION LOCK”?
“No, no, you still can get them, just format your vita, get another memory card, switch to a jpn account and forget all your usa games, because it’s a single account concole, deal with it”. MY ***, that’s no region lock?
lol be grateful that you can play that game on your PS Vita, pity those 3DS user who cant even use different region games cartridge (hardware lock ffs)
It’s not about being grateful, it’s about playing what you paid for.
At least we 3Ds users have a way to play free games that aren’t region locked. The ps Vita is a piece of *** that will never get anything good because the “Devs” and “Mods” don’t want to release any native vita *** because their selfish and greedy!
say “Hye” to your greedy-@ss Gateway hacker *bricker =)
Woah, you sound like that *** Abdou or whatever is called that guy from Koalavita.
Stop talking bulls*it (and pleaso get off the internet, no one needs you)
Locking the Vita to one account isn’t region locking it. You can play games from other regions by switching over, and that process being annoying doesn’t mean it’s region locked in any way.
Format? Forget your USA games? *** You still have them, the only thing that happens is that the menu gets disordered, the heck are you talking about mate.
it looks like it could cause piracy, they basically install plain .pkg and transfer it to other vita.
assuming it is real
This isn’t front page material. Just make a thread about it.
I’m so happy with the Vita right now I almost don’t want piracy to take hold of it.
dont worry, theres no piracy happening
well if they can let me purchase hk content then import to my us account that would be great i myt ps plus sub in 2 regions, i also want to buy many asian contents and play in my us account
I would be happy whit it allowing to install things like the youtube app, since the store of my country dosen’t have it…
I remember when wololo didn’t support piracy. Now he’s talking as if it would actually be a worthwhile achievement and is wanting to test it.
where’s piracy????
Unsigned code, not piracy. That is what wololo has said. emulators from a dead era in the past is not the kernel hack for the future. Why is someone always concerned with morality and wololo’s help to run super Mario bros on a Sony product? They should be working for Sony aka the white hats! And not reading this websites articles.
@Sifjar, read the article again. “epic proportions” doesn’t mean I think it’s good. The fact that I am willing to test it in order to write about it doesn’t mean I would support piracy. My stance on piracy is and always has been clear.
well, you’re shortsighted. if it means they could download package and re-sign (assuming it is real) then it is easy for homebrewer to make .pkg and re-sign rather than resort lengthy exploit type hack
If the PS3/PSP is anything to go by making signed packages work on any vita is a kernel exploit right?
that’s not a kernel exploit. That’s just signing packages.
For the Vita to run another persons packages means the kernel has to be able to verify their contents as legitimate. Unless I’m missing something here it doesn’t matter if you own both accounts (JP/US/etc) in the end the hardware sees them as completely different users, all content is bound to the user (that is why you can own multiple Vita devices and run the same games).
To bypass this for retail games without kernel exploit would mean someone has deciphered the Vita package format and rebundled them without security checks, aka piracy.
Woah does that mean i can play phantasy star online2
Million arthur,etc
Wait guys! maybe it’s sony trick to force us in buying new memory cards!
Because all these free things are too big! xD
jk
I bet this is pretty easy to Sony to notice, seeing apps not available for a certain region connected to an account’s download list.
It won’t be in the downloads list because it’s from another region.
But they can still do something to read all the content (or at least app/games) on your Vita memory card
Ugh, just noticed he wrote “(…) an account’s download list.”
My bad…
It’s only between your PS Vita & your CMA =)
easy, and they won’t ban them.
why ? because i have Tom Blitz (US) on my JP account, because i installed it before they force wipe memory card when switching region, and it stays there.
i mean before Sony implemented FW that wipes memory card when switching region.
the backup works just like that. i restored it without using opencma at all. just now.
Mira: http://puu.sh/8AM8r.jpg
Lamento decepcionarte, pero no es un Hack Nativo.
No, people jumping on the boat in favor of people like these instead of real and highly known hackers like yifanlu is what’s killing the scene. Yifanlu is the only hacker to ever show unsigned code running on the Vita, not even SKFU, but he doesn’t get nearly the same level of praise and attention than script kiddies like SKFU and KoalaVita.
If you guys want to believe some random guy on twitter and youtube, who thinks a bootloop can let us install CFW, rather than people who have dozens of times shown they have skills and have actually released or shown real progress, then it’s your problem. The rest of us humans with brains will continue to give credit where credit is due, to real hackers like yifanlu and davee who do know what they’re doing and do have the guts and knowledge to achieve a real hack.
>who thinks a bootloop can let us install CFW
I LOL’d when I saw this video…
Also, I guess I came a little late to the community, didn’t know YifanLu got unsigned code running on vita
I think this trick would be very useful if it’d let me get around the region lock and download my legally obtained JP content on my US-set memory card – mostly to save me having to buy another large card to play PSO2 or go through a hassle to switch regions if I want to go between Persona 2 Batsu and like Ninja Gaiden Vita
But since I doubt it works with anything but free apps – hardly even worth mentioning. Plus Koala’s attitude is bad. I’ve been following the whole fight on twitter and he seems more interested in being called an elite hacker than anything – and he has nothing much to show the world
not once did i see them say it runs unsighned code its a region hack not a damn cfw nub
If you would’ve actually read what Acid had said, you would’ve known he was talking about KoalaVita…..
and btw by your standards of “hacks” you are basicly stating vhbl isnt a hack you have contradicted yourself sir, would you like a cookie? and runnig insighned code has nothing to do with people knowing what theyre doing i got unsigned code running on the vita in 2 weeks of tinkering around with it not that big of a progress
1. VHBL is a homebrew loader. The exploit is in the PSP savegame…
2. I bet you can’t show any proof of the unsigned code on your Vita.
are you sure you know what unsigned code means?
ye4h bruh it’s coed that c4n onlee h4ev positif numb3rs, lol urdumb
the other unsigned code xD good one though 😆
i got a vita hack runnign within 2 weeks of tinkering not that hard to accomplish and by you stating this isnt a hack youre basicly saying vhbl isnt a hack you just contradicted yourself sire…want a cookie?
^This is why not everyone should be able to acces to the internet…
Jajaja its only me or Koalavita shut down his twitter account…
@nasser_luffy tooo mmmhhh strange….
@nasser_luffy re-activated his account a few minutes ago…
I read your post and I’m not sure I understand your motivations – why are articles about Nintendo more suitable for the front page than cool Vita tricks?
I would like to see both types of content, personally.
Statements like “people who have a real hack in their possession are able to explain it cleverly and calmly, even when their opponents are aggressive” and ” this is just the simple trick we’ve been able to reproduce independently (Which, again, is still cool, but not revolutionary)” are weird and make it seem like something ugly is going on behind the scenes.
I’d rather have read the post you’re holding back, it sounds more interesting than this.
I said nothing about these articles not being suitable for the frontpage. The article is pending explanations from the koala team so we can give them a chance to explain. Since the investigation has been taking time, and people were pointing fingers at me for not mentioning this so far, I felt an explanation was required.
Unlike other people, I like to understand what I write about. It takes time to write the truth. This has nothing to do with the subject not being frontpage worthy, on the contrary. It’s about making sure I dont write something incorrect.
wololo i have to go for a bit but i found some info very interesting but idk how to go about it so do you have an email or a way for me to contact u
Wagic.the.homebrew at gmail
So that’s the email i use to send naked images of myself ?
“We have an article ready that explains the whole process, as we believe the Koala team has done it. ”
And where is that article, exactly?
Pending Koala team’s side of the story, as I explained.
apparently, koalavita removed your account
Koala and nasser removed their Twitter account, which i find rather cowardly :p
koalaVita’s fb page is gone too. I guess that’s enough to show that the drama is now over….
“We have an article ready that explains the whole process, as we believe the Koala team has done it.”
W
“We have an article ready that explains the whole process, as we believe the Koala team has done it.”
Where is it though??
Can’t you read? wololo said he wanted to give koalavita and his team a chance to explain themselves, but they just deleted their facebook and twitter accounts so there’s no way for him to contact them anymore. The article will come sooner or later though.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2CbvVBkIfCgJP4-NwzuCrQ
Oh look, he changed all of his/their videos to “private”
LOLing right now because…
https://twitter.com/Nasser_Luffy/status/463832836617670656
This blogpost was just Calming the waters.
Gosh, I bet they can’t even understand english
One fake arrives, one fake goes, as always.
Also, if i were wololo (wich i’m not), i’d have posted that article hours ago, since “tricking” the vita to run a game without being purchased is impossible, or at least, very very hidden on the undergrounds of the scene.
I hope it’s real, because I want to play phantasy star online 2 on my vita so much that I’ve been considering swapping it to Japanese and updating.
That’s the only vita game I want to play at the moment.
hey tell us the trick please
you can’t do it without kiosk vita (demo mode).
that’s why this so called “hack” is not even worthy called hack
“…, and some of us have probably become aggressive over time in their search for the truth.”
Reach out to it! -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnORxdWTGiA
Well, I would be happy about some kind of exploid to be able to get games (not only free apps) of my US account on the memory card assigned to my German account. Swaping between two accounts just for that is such a pain.
I would like to have the netflix app on my vita tv 🙂
How is it done?
1. get a kiosk vita
2. let it login using you account
3. download (free) app ?
4. backup.
5. restore on retail vita
6. ????
7. profit
I’d really like to have NicoNicoDouga on my Vita for my NA acc.
