Release: PS4 FW Tool by SKFU
Developer SKFU just released PS4 FW Tool 1.00. We’ve mentioned recently that scene hackers have jumped on the new PS4 firmwares released by Sony recently, investigating them. SKFU’s release here is the logical continuity of these initial investigations, adding a GUI to the investigation work and scripts that were written initially.
PS4 FW Tool is a Windows tool to investigate the contents of a PS4 firmware update file. Features are described by SKFU as follows:
- Show PS4 firmware details
- Unpack PS4 (SLB2 container) firmware
- Pack PS4 (SLB2 container) firmware
This tool will not be revolutionary for early investigations on the PS4, but understanding and unpacking Sony’s packages is always an essential step for investigation. SKFU mentions that although the files are named with a .PUP extension, they are actually not PUP files, but SLB2 files containing the actual PUP files. “PUP” is most likely used here because that’s what has been used as a naming convention for the Vita and the PS3 so far.
SKFU plans to update his tool to add PUP pack and unpack from within the SLB2 file.

Just leave Sony alone.
hahaha way the go wololo 😀 that was cool 🙂
lmao, nice one ^-^
dude be serious for a moment i totally agree with hacks n’ all but only for emulation no piracy otherwise they wont want to release titles on the ps4, go hack an xbox instead.
Emulation is also piracy. You just pirate older games.
Emulation isn’t piracy. Piracy is piracy. if you’ve purchased a game and later played it on an emulator, it’s not piracy. You still own a license to play the game. Likewise, if you never bought a game and play it on an emulator, it is piracy.
Agree, every game or console has a Terms and conditions, which strictly prohibit copy actions on any part of the game – textures, sounds, the whole game etc. So making a copy of a legitimately bought game to run it as a backup or to run it in emulator is piracy
you need to understand the software before you can make app’s, games and homebrews. hence the utility linked above.
Honestly I have no use for it, but other developers might.
and besides that, I get most of my games from the bargain bin. I don’t have cash to spend on newly released games.
Xbox360 and wii was hacked very early, ps3 was only hacked a couple years ago. Xbox 360 and wii games continuously outsold ps3 counterparts which proves piracy enabled =/= less games sold.
Ps3 games were also more expensive which should also show that consoles incapable of piracy (at the time) also do not have cheaper games as ive suggested (piracy drives up game costs).
Although i dont advocate piracy myself (i have a good paying job), piracy is not as evil as they would have you believe.
Piracy killed the PSP, no Sony killed the PSP.
The vita is headed the way, wheres the piracy.
^as ive heard suggested^
Hate that theres no edit on this sometimes
360 and Wii both hacked early on? They had a bigger player base early on too. PS3 was considered trash when it first came out. Nobody wanted to buy it and it was being boycotted to heck because of the hate for Sony.
Also,
XBox360 (Call of Duty) > Outsold PS3.
Wii (Nintendo) > Outsold PS3.
/end
Piracy kills. It hurts especially if you have a small consumer base like the PSP and Vita. Just because you don’t see immediate effects doesn’t mean it won’t have lasting damage.
RIP Vita. RIP PSP.
Completely agree, except for in the case of the vita, neither the vitas game library nor it’s audience is large enough to be able to handle piracy, I for one hope piracy doesn’t come to the vita until it at least gets a stable userbase + library of games, otherwise you’re killing it off before it’s had a chance to get itself together.
The same can be applied for any console, if the console is too new, or the fanbase/ games library too small, piracy will do damage. If the console has had the time to mature, then piracy doesn’t do as much damage.
Xbox360 (call of duty) > outsold ps3 is the exact point i was making. Because most people are unaware of CFW or modchips most people will buy thier games anyway regardless on whether its been hacked or not
I wonder what the point of having multiple PUPs in the file might be, PUPs themselves are already like archives, the PS4 update file is then like an archive of archives 😐
It’s rared for better compatibility
I see what you did there
Indeed.
lo mismo se debe hacer con el vita. yo estoy abanzando en el engendimiento de archivos .pkg
Time to add a new section to /talk?
@lol RIP PSP in the same sentence with piracy? are you really stupid? check the sales chart . PSP is dead simply because Sony and other devs moved on to Vita, Smarthphones, PS4,X1. This is a natural thing for every console getting old.
Anyway PSP is still getting games such as God Eater 2, PES2014,FIFA etc. PSP had a small cnsumer base? what is this guy smoking? ice? please *** if you have no ideea what are you talking about. But thanks for the laughs!
Vita is not even 10% what PSP was in terms of awesome games, player base, modding community, etc etc. But i agree with you on RIP Vita the sinking ship. And when a ship sinks, Sony releases a new one called Vita TV.
