[Video] The Z showcases VHBL on Vita Firmware 2.60
Sometimes, there’s not enough hacking news for us to mention on this blog for months, and at other times, it feels we don’t have enough people out there to cover all of them. That was it for my lame excuse for being 3 days late on announcing this.
Following his “Hello World” video on Vita’s firmware 2.60, The Z quickly showed us he has more than that, with a full working VHBL port. This should be no surprise if you’ve been regularly following this blog, as we’ve known for a while now that he has had a working VHBL for quite some time in at least one game (which was only available in the EU store).
In this video, The Z shows he can run various PSP homebrews on his PS Vita running the latest 2.60 firmware: Wagic, Snes9xTYL (Super NES Emulator), Emumaster (a.k.a. Masterboy, Master system/ Game Boy emu), gPSP (Game Boy advance emu), and PSP Filer, probably the most popular File manager on the PSP.
VHBL is a PSP Homebrew launcher that runs on the PSP Emulator of the PS Vita. It does not let you run PSP isos, or Vita “homebrews”, let alone Vita game backups.
This video happens in the context of a previous announcement by Acid_Snake that he plans to release his own VHBL port sometime soon, and an unexpected return from Total_Noob who announced he owns a PSP Kernel exploit running on the Vita that he plans to release as well.
We’ve had regular releases of VHBL for the past months, but PS Vita firmware 2.02 is still one of our favorites because it is the last one that had seen a PSP Kernel exploit, from Total_Noob himself. That exploit allows the Vita to run, in addition to Homebrews, PSP isos and plugins.
Independently of what happens next, hopefully the hackers will be able to synchronize in order to not release all exploits at the same time, which could lead to some waste if not done properly 🙂
Good work TheZett!
You never fail to deliver!
weren’t you the same guy that said “ewww usermode”?
Why are you praising usermode exploits now?
LOL I was about to say the same thing.
Yes, that was me. Some days I just like *** posting.
You must be crazy man 😀
2.60 was a decent update, just days before i was wishing i didn’t have to go into settings to turn on wifi. So i guess what I’m saying is whatever new features Sony brings in their next update better be fantastic or a lot of people will stick with 2.60 and whatever exploit is forth coming. I can’t imagine being on a firmware though…Lotta missing features
*that should be “on a *Lower* firmware”
Yep still on 1.81 bud.
IMO however they update their OFW, it simply just sucks with regards to ability. The Vita is an amazing piece of hardware and it’s just a big turnoff to see all that power terribly regulated. It’s like having a Porsche but the fourth gear is disabled.
And i’m not talking about playing ISOs. I don’t care too much for that. It’s just that their OFWs are SOOOO CLUNKY! They can’t seem to get it in their heads that there are a LOT of power users out there.
Why does it not run PSP iso on 2.60
because you need to do some research, simply said vhbl works on user mode exploits which means it doesn’t have enough privileges to load iso BACKUPS
If my guess is right, the hackers just used the Qwikrazor87′s game exploit which is the gamocracy to lure Sony into releasing their best update. And, they are going to do same thing over and over again until all best updates are out. Then they release their best ace, which I think is the Z’s.
I don’t think so, imo Sony already had update ready to release. They can release pointless FW updates (and they are doing it) which does nothing else but fixes exploit used for VHBL.
like tinostar said, Sony probably already had the firmware ready.
We never expect a good firmware to be released after we release VHBL, normally they are just pointless updates that only patch the exploits.
Because tomatoes don’t grow on trees meaning even though it has the similar function as the psp the vita baby doesn’t understand the psp codes yet. Further example trying to make xbox work on hacked ps3, wanna check out halo. The question you should have asked is “why the heck don’t it run vitaisos yet?!” Baby baby it was all a dream
WHAT?
lol ^ my thoughts exactly..couldn’t have said better myself
Don’t worry guys, I’ve got top minds at the smithsonian in the process of deciphering this message. We expect results by vita FW:3.0.
A kernel exploit will be released when 3.00 arrive. 😀
On the other hand…It gives me nightmares thinking of…Sony might also keep something back so once Kern exploit is released they will release the ace too.. Just saying… You are realy great people…names of whose will be remembered forever…..:-)
imagine 3 exploits being release in one ninja release by the time ps4 is released… 😀
This is great work, people need all the exploits they can get. its good news VHBL is working on 2.60. The-Z never ceases to amaze. Thank you for the dedication and hard work. Keep them coming.
Sony will hunt you now they saw your face reflecting on your PS vita, Good Luck buddy
I don’t think that The-Z cares about it, great example should be that everybody is scared showing their MAC addresses but show me 1 of his videos where he hides it
good luck to you in life if you think a usermode exploit, which doesn’t touch any intellectual property, is illegal
don’t worry wololo, we are synchronized.
Now the real question is, is this The Z’s exploit or the one I’m gonna release? better ask him for more details.
User mode is garbage if this was a thread id lock it pointless discussion!
Then give us something better, or at least give us that thing you call garbage, it’s not as easy as you may think
a cat and mouse thing huh? better to play in to that ways…just like saying give and take…a win win situation right? jejejeje..great minds great works! what do we got? great pipol! thanks wololo – the z – acid_snake — peace!
Well done on acid_snake and Z! Can’t wait for either release
Gotta love dat accent.
The PSP had homebrew and you can mod and hack it however you want. The PSP sold over 71 million units worldwide.
Sony trying to kill of the homebrew on the Vita, as of now I’m guessing the Vita has only sold 3 million units. The more Sony tries to kill off homebrew the more unpopular it is. I don’t think the Vita will take off in sales until there is a bulletproof hack on the Vita.
With all the Android and other devices out now, it’s taking away from the handheld market. One reason the Vita has low sales. In the PSP days we didn’t have all these devices like we do now. The casual gamer is just going to take their phone with them or tablet. The non casual gamer is going to want real game controls. Sadly, more are now moving to those JXD devices or other “open” handhelds, making the Vita scene even smaller. I however even welcome usermode exploit and am greatful to the work involved.
If Sony had full PSP backwards compatibility and used standard sd cards (just like the 3DS) it would be selling much better.
There is a demand for dedicated handheld gaming, the 3DS is proof of that. It’s just that the Vita has so many hidden fees (a lot of it has to do with the memory cards) and the consumer is aware of that, combined with the terrible economy, it’s no surprise that sales are low. I don’t think the Vita will take off in sales unless there is a hack that allows piracy.
You don’t even have full control of your Vita, you can only customize the Vita on what Sony allows.
Somebody please tell me.
