Tutorial: running emulators in VHBL
Note from wololo: This is a tutorial from our community member titegtnodI, this article is not from me. He made the cool suggestion to post it here as well. You can find his original thread here.
I couldn’t help but notice many people seem to be having issues running emulators. I have a pretty comfortable setup myself with gpsp, MasterBoy, Nester AoEX, and SNES9xTYL. So if any of those emulators interest you, I’ll explain to you a quick and easy way to get those running. Download everything in the required files, and we’ll get started! ![]()
Note: This tutorial assumes that you already know how to install homebrew, if you don’t, please refer to here to find your corresponding tutorial.
If you already have one of these emulators, please download my copy as it’s setup to support the “ROM Directory Structure” that I’ve included in this tutorial.
REQUIRED FILES
- 7-zip (If you don’t already have it)
- ROM Directory Structure (100% required)
- SNES9xTYL (For SNES games)
- Nester AoEX (For NES games)
- MasterBoy (For GB / GBC / Sega Master System / Game Gear games)
- gPSP (For GBA games)
Setup
If you don’t already have 7-zip, please install that now. I’ll be including screenshots of 7-Zip to try to assist in it’s usage.
Next, extract all of the .7z files to your PSP save directory for your Vita (Should look like PSAVEDATA\cv3e231472f1a122 or something, this is mine).
Adding ROMs
- Open up the directory “ROMS/ROMS”, you should see folders titled gba, gbc, nes, and snes. If there’s a type of rom you want that’s not included in this folder (like Game Gear), create a folder for that now.
- Simply add in all the ROMs you want to the directories, this step can be repeated at any time so don’t feel pressured to put in every ROM you think you might use.
- Go to “ROMS” (so one directory up), right-click the subdirectory titled “ROMS”, and click “7-Zip -> Add to archive…“.
- Set the archive format to zip, the compression level to store, and the name to “INSTALL.ZIP” (case sensitive) (Screenshot), and press ok
Yay your ROMs are ready for the Vita!
Final Steps
Now you just need to transfer the saves of ROMS, and all the emulators you want to play to your Vita. Then you can just install and play! gPSP is an exception though, you need to extract it’s INSTALL.ZIP, download a GBA BIOS (find it via Google, don’t PM me for it), add it to the same folder as it’s EBOOT.PBP, rezip it using the settings you used before and you’re good to go for all of your emulators! ![]()

??
Great tutorial.
Personally I like to used special folders then copy my homebrew or emulator in the Game folder works every time 🙂
Please explain
the problem is, i am running ps vita 2.12 and, it seams that no one on youtube has done a video of how to do this exactly. Its eaither a video with really ennoying music while the said person is highlighting aload of stuff on the video, or its really young children/teenagers attempting do do a video of how to do it, but they are leaving half of the information out.
A video needs to be done explaining exactly how it is to be done from start to finnish, including a written discription of where to get said downloads from ect.
Also where and how we put the files on a ps vita, how we explore/find the ps vita update file.
Now im not stupid i build compluters jailbreak iphones, and the same for android.
But no 1 has made a video of how to do this with all the said given information, could someone do it please and email me the link!!?? many thanks
Check out TheZ94 on youtube I believe this is what your looking for. It’ll be broken down into two vids. This was my first VHBL and I had zero problems. Good luck.
i wan digimon world 3 actually in vita.
That’s a good game xD
never got gpsp to keep a save i made 🙁 it would always delete them after i closed the game
Best way to save games on gpsp is to use the ‘save state’ function in the menu (press L to access the menu). It works every time then, rather than using the in-game save functions which are lost everytime you close the emulator.
Tutorial how to run Neogeo rom pls !
Tutorial for neogeo would be good, i have all these emu exept neogeo and msx
can patapon 2 com back as a exploit agen so can u chek it out
this was a good idea. thanks all.
please tell my that there will soon be psp iso support or tn v or something. I NEED MY NARUTO HEROES 3 i can literally care less for any other features
Protip: You can run those emulators on you tablet or smartphone too.
Heck even my ancient old Nokia N95 8GB can run them. Even Quake 3 with support for bluetooth M+K.
Because CFW!!! PS Vita could do that too. But it cannot. Since SONY thought it was a good idea to give it PS3 security like.
I remember that guy who ported Quake 1 over to PSP. Again thanks to CFW. Next step for him was impressed Sony coming and offering him a job!! and he was working on porting Quake 2 PC version too. But since he got the Sony job, he couldnt do it anymore.
how can i uninstall the vhbl ?
I just copy roms via FTP. It’s much faster and easier to do.
I don’t think FTP is working in the Gameocracy exploit.
Really? That’s sad. I’m using Gravity Crash, and FTP homebrew app working flawlessly.
FTP works for me on 3.50 with VHBL
Why run emulators on tablets and smartphones? On tablets you have poor steering because of the size and the screen are way too small on a smartphone. Why not run emulator on PC as you have at least 99% compatibility? No there’s no challenge in that. Running homebrews on vita is more challenging because you simply can’t. You had the same feeling some years ago when similar thing happened to PSP and look where it got now. I’m certain the same will happen to Vita eventually.
I put the game backup in the computer, I change the other server after back when the game can also be used?
i hope dt in d near days sm1 wud have an exploit wc can play ps3 iso on d vita coz sony have already games cross play of ps3 to be playd on d vita.
dis powst is d wust fing i av eva red in ma ole lyf
Can someone please tell me where to download the ROMS that are compatible with SNES9xTYL ??
has anyone been able to run Yoshi’s Island (snes) without any lag? it lags regardless of the settings.
Unfortunately that game tends to run a bit slow on PSP/PS Vita
ah. yeah it appears so. sigh. thanks anyway.
When i run gpsp the save state function doesn’t work. It works for the time i keep the emulator loaded, but when i close it i lose all my save states. Even when i load the state manually the next time by selecting the actual save state file it gives me a black screen and then the gameboy splash screen comes up like i just turned on the game. It’s very frustrating, and i didn’t find this out until putting three hours into swordcraft story 🙁
ee
bla bla
could someone please to a video of how to do this for vita 2.12, with a explination of what is being done and how to do it, with a discription of where to download the files.
I am not daft, i build computers, fix iphones, jailbreak iphones and android.
Yet i cant seam to find a proper video without stupid music and someone highlighting a load of stuff on a screen.
Im pleading for someone to do a proper video
Vita is dead, you hear me ITS FUKING DEAD!!!!
Nah, I see good things for the Vita on the horizon. Especially with the ps4 on the way there’s supposedly gonna be mad support for both systems.
With that being said, has there been any news on a new k.exploit on the vita? I still have the old one run through Uno, but with soul sacrifice and Dragons crown teasing me, its gonna be hard to maintain. Goodbye psp isos. :'( I hope your not lost forever.
Thanks for the helpful post..;-)
You’re welcome 🙂
Please make tutorial how to play n64 games on PS Vita.
