You Can’t Upload Whatever You Want With The Share Button, Says Yoshida.

At the PlayStation 4 conference in late February, Mark Cerny, lead system architect for the console was proud to speak about the innovative ‘Share’ button, which lets you film your gameplay, upload it to facebook and also take screenshots with many other possibilities, but, there are some limitations.
In an interview with 4gamer.net, Shuhei Yoshida spoke more about the share button, and its limitations.
What Yoshida says comes as no surprise that there is a drawback to an awesome feature.
Something awesome comes along?
Just wait….
Yoshida said:
There will be parts of a game that the maker does not want people to be able to see, for example, on Vita, developers can in certain scenes disable the feature that lets users take a screenshot, and will have a similar mechanism. The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance.
What he is saying, is how developers can disable the share button at will, and you cannot use it when you are playing a boss battle, or anything that may spoil the plot.
This is not the first we’ve heard of such limitations, for example in some Vita games developers have the choice to disable screen-shots, parts of the game, or even throughout the whole game, Resistance: Burning Skies for example, where the developers disabled such feature.
Although this is clever, I can see it being very annoying when you are desperate to know how to defeat the final boss on Knack or any other game, but you cannot do so apart from searching through those 10,000 word walkthroughs that are extremely hard to figure out what you need to look at.
Does anyone else think it’s funny that half of Yoshida’s name is a Nintendo character? (Yoshi)

Oh, and thanks, Telgardrakore!
there will always be a way to share video.. even if it can’t always be the best way
Yep. How do they think there are so many walkthrough videos on youtube. Most are with a video camera, not in game video capture like this feature.
They wont stop video walkthroughs just *** off its users thats all they are going to do.

Yeah, like hooking the sh*t up to your PC TV card and recording it. I’ve done it many times that way.
Yeah…. disabling the share button is gonna stop anyone from recording what they want.
it will stop the majority though, imagine how many scenes of those boss fights there will be on facebook and ustream(?)
doing this will atleast wittle that amount down to alot less.
Up to the dev’s I cannot see too many decent devs taking advantage of this really, media is good for most games.
God the vita made some horrible decisions giving people no way to create video reviews from the device, a simple mini hdmi out would have sufficed r_r
This doesn’t surprise me at all. As i keep saying they will hype it up then remove features.
Just typical Sony.
+thousand times on that!
I don’t agree. Yes, the limited it, but the feature is still there 😉
I feel that this is actually a good idea. It isn’t like a person can’t use a video camera for those boss battles. The video sharing would only be fun without it.
Man I feel this post hard. 😀 (I agree.)
I do agree with this, to a certain extent, I mean doing that boss battle and showing it off to your friends would be awesome 😀
I’m not sure that Sony said that this sharing feature would work with any footage at all. If they havnt, then they havnt removed anything. Besides, if it is up the publishers, then it is up them, not Sony (unless Sony is the publisher of course, but i’m talking about the future in general).
“[…]but you cannot do so apart from searching through those 10,000 word walkthroughs that are extremely hard to figure out what you need to look at.”
There are plenty of people with capture cards and similar stuff.
And even more morons with smartphone cameras who don’t understand that a shaky, blurry videos with awful sound don’t help anyone…
a picture can say a thousand words..
And Sony does it again!
therz a halo guys 3:07 in the video..
that’s because they’re talking about the developer Bungie (making Destiny)
and Bungie are the team behind all of the Halos, until they went rogue and have now gone multiplatform, as far as i’m aware 😛
I fxxking hate you 🙂 weres wololo..his articles are always interesting
🙁
Minimur12: I enjoy the articles you write 🙂
What does Sony do again?
Give an awesome feature, then limit it to make it almost pointless and it won’t be long before they remove it. This will be the same that happened with other OS feature on the PS3, as stansmith said
“This doesn’t surprise me at all. As i keep saying they will hype it up then remove features.
Just typical Sony.”
Exactly the same happened to other OS. Linux, anyone?
That is not what they do. Sony gives a feature and lets the developers decide how to use it. If the developer want to allow full video recording, then they’ll do that.
Why would Sony remove this feature?
I think it is also worth mentioning that Sony has added a lot more features than what they have removed, so statistically it is more unlikely that something will be removed instead of being added.
But i find it pretty much impossible for Sony to remove the video recording stuff from the PS4. The whole console is built around this feature, it even have a physical button on the controller for easy sharing of videos and such things. I also see no point in removing it.
With OtherOS, it has been said that it was removed because Sony saw it as a security risk, and it has also been said that IBM pressured Sony to remove it. I dont know what is true, but it seems to be a reason behind it at least. What reason would it be to remove the video recording? Personally i cant see any reason. Sony gives the developers the options to regulate the video recording if the developers want to do that, and i cant see any security risk in terms of hacking from having a video recording option.
I’m also positive that a lot of people will use the video recording stuff, so removing something like this would have a lot bigger implications than what the removal of OtherOS had (a feature that most likely very few PS3 owners used, or perhaps not even knew about. OtherOS wasnt even mentioned on the PS3 box (at least the european version) under the list of features).
With security risk, i mean that it could lead to the PS3 being hacked.
capture card for the win?
depends on the video codec the game uses
there are some hdmi and component codecs that will not record on external recorders,im sure sony wants to add it now that they can use hdmi as a system standard
The whole excitement about the feature was to show off beating a hard boss. Who wants to see you killing minions or walking from checkpoint to checkpoint?
+1
I’m okay with this since I really hate spoilers.
Than don’t watch it. Simple enough! Duh!!!!….
i always wondered resistance and umvc screen shots. i thought it was stupid want to show off their good work? resistance looked pretty good.
hmm some of my words ended up missing…i like gunblade :-O
i thought dis was shity with the vita wen i want to take a screen shot of a cool scenes but cant realy with the vita i got good screen shots from martal kombat though..
I think this is the most coherent thought you have ever conveyed. Kudos…I actually didn’t get a headache trying to decipher what you were trying to say!
cant u record gameplay with the sony nasne n any outher hd gaming dvr .. bumers i thought it beee cool to be on the ps4 in a boos battle n stream the hole fight to my psn n facebook friends..
yeah but thats the ps3, not ps4, and the nasne isnt tech that sony have put months of focus and thoughts on for a specific feature (Im guessing)
there even a samuri guy yoshimitsu (idk on spelling)
oh yeah, how could I forget!
well i guess i getting the next xbox cuz the rooom lumination thing and an ps4 for vita remote play… but getting nintendo wii u sooon thks on that wiikey…
As it states on the previous video I posted, it still says illuminroom is a ‘proof of concept’ do it is probably no where near done. 🙁
I have a feeling it’ll be released quite a while after the nextbox is announce
Kudos to them.
Nothing is more annoying than typing in the name of a game and the first thing that pops up is FINAL BOSS: MAIN CHARACTER’S FATHER, CHARACTER Y’S DEATH SCENE everywhere.
this is a legit limitation though…
as the cinematics in games do cont as piracy if you share them
as they are not independent to the gamers experience like regular game play
also “lets plays” do put a damper on many people playing a game and giving away a story point can ruin a lot for many people
ever have that someone ruin a movie you just rented and haven’t watched yet by telling the plot of the story
i know you have with all the predictable movies coming out of the us for the last 30 plus years
the game you playing at the moment………..
they all die!
i know i put a bullet in they’re heads myself so i could Finnish the last map without them setting the enemies on me over and over , also cole train just wouldn’t stop blocking the path, just sitting there probably listening to the damn speakers on his chest
There’s always the dazzle equipment, or any TV screen capture equipment. PVR I think it’s called? PVC?
It’s called a TV / Capture card for your PC. All kinds of options. HDMI, SD, AV pick one. lol
Yes, I’m well aware. Thanks.
In Japan (Sony’s homeland) it’s considered a disrespect to spoil something, so it’s obvious if they want to disable that function.
The only way for someone to spoil the plot is going to see the damn video, even if the video says “Boss Battle #X From X Game, WARNING – CONTAINS SPOILER”.
After that it’s not the Creator the one to blame.
What next? Will they make a Camera that decides what you can record and what you can’t?
That’ll be next if it isn’t already on the drawing board. ***!
surprise surprise
i mean seriously do they think disabling this feature will stop people from posting boss battles and other stuff online? all it will do is make it less convenient and that completely defeats the purpose of turning off that feature unless that was their objective in the first place which completely idiotic.
Lol. But wait, couldn’t it be at least locked to friends only? Would be ‘at least’ applicable.
6 mins in he say “IF we know enough about u to predict what u want to buy before u buy it” I mean *** who wants them to know that much. I dont even know that much about myself.
who gives a *** lol if u have a tv tuner card or a capture device such as myself it really doesnt even matter
I see I was beaten to the punch.
This isn’t going to stop external capture cards, how silly.
Assuming you have one. I just did a quick price check, and HDMI capture cards are about $100.
Also, this really defeats the whole “convenience” factor of the share button. What would the devs block from being shared? My guess is boss fights and cool cutscenes. What would I want to record? Probably boss fights and cool cutscenes.
The capture card crowd will still exist for walkthroughs, so no big worries there. My concern is more practical: Joe Sixpack wants to record his fight with the big boss and show it to his friends. Why take that away from him?
To be honest, I would probably upload a boss fight if i had the feature, but I definitly wouldnt go out of my way to spend another $100/£70 to use a capture card.
Nah, I don’t think so, Sony wouldn’t do such a thing, that would be almost like auto-censoring /end sarcasm. No, seriously, next thing we know, we will have certain names censored (weapons, names of bosses… the word “boss”, etc…).
Seriously, in every country it is “considered a disrespect to spoil” (if someone says they don’t mind, it’s because they don’t care about it in the first place…). If someone spoil you in real life, warn them (maybe show that you are ***, and explain why.. that is, if that person actually matters), if that does not work, stop being their friend/seeing them… yes, it’s that easy. The “share” button is about sharing with people you know after all.
And if someone is looking for a “let’s play” what exactly do they expect? That they would just show the title screen?
In my opinion, this is not as much as spoiling the plot, as it is spoiling the experience. When you see what happens and how you are supposed to react, you won’t get the same satisfaction/enjoyment (read: sense of accomplishment). I understand that, and respect it, but I don’t agree with taking away even more pseudo-freedom from users as a pretext of protecting themselves against spoilers, that might tarnish their experience.
Every user should have the freedom to pay attention and take care of themselves. After all, if I so choose, I should have the right to be spoiled.
(I never realized that about Yoshi-san, interesting XD… also, I had no idea the limit here was so high… sorry XD)
in my articles, i was once tempted to just refer to him as Yoshi xD
The dude who wrote this article seems pretty stupid.
The actual quote from Yoshida “The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance.” twisted into “and you cannot use it when you are playing a boss battle, or anything that may spoil the plot.” in only half a sentence.
Also “but you cannot do so apart from searching through those 10,000 word walkthroughs that are extremely hard to figure out what you need to look at.”… come the *** on! I understand if you are going to be so lazy as to read a guide on how to beat something you might be too lazy to read/skim a walkthrough, but being “extremely hard”???
Complete and utter incompetence…
Sony developing new hardware: let’s open space for some cool, new features!
Sony implementing features: despite our developer’s effort, we will just restrict those features. ‘Cause reasons.
When Sony will learn?
The PS4 failed before launch. The only people that will buy the console are the fanboys and that will not be enough to sustain it. Times are rough and people are opening their eyes. You waste more money on a console than on a PC (games, controllers, headsets, memberships, etc…). I sincerely wish the best to Sony but it’s going to be hard. Same goes for the other two “giants”.
Hey man, I like your articles, but did you really need to write this one? It is just stirring up the trouble. People already should have known that developers can limit the console. They should also assume that you can’t record stuff on the web browser or similar apps. Just like you can’t take screenshots of some stuff in the Vita. Now stuff like “The PS4 failed before launch” and “well i guess i getting the next xbox” are showing up.
I lke the fact it has this limitation. I would mainly use the share button to share awesome or funny moments. Grand Theft Auto would probably get a lot of hilarious uploads.
Also the fact that the limitation not only would save people from spoilers, but the people who make the game choose if it’s limited. So everyone getting excited towards Sony needs to remember that it wont be their decision, anyway. Be mad at the people who produce the game instead.
It has been confirmed that 2014’s release of CFW for the PS4 will fix this feature along with every other mistake Sony make.
+1
xD
Honestly only thing you are pointing out is the fact that there is going to be a function similar to :
is_share_able_content(bool);
Comparing this to dumping Linux support from PS3 is not valid; If you ask me PS4 seems “rushed” nothing is really known about it except the controller; Lets wait for next Xbox version;
Don’t worry. It will come up as a DLC. 😛
“$39.99 – 1 Year Unlimited Sharing Subscription”
“Enable the players to capture, share and upload the screenshots of any games and media, with no limits and restrictions for 1 Year”
It is not like that the old way doesn’t work anymore. There will always be videos of practically every game out there, share button or not.
IMHO the possibility to disable this feature is absolutely necessary. You have to see this from an admin point of view… 2 examples :
Sonic Allstars Racing : The miiverse screenshot feature is disabled in online lobbies, so people cannot post names and other data of other players.
ZombiU : The extra feature “zombify me” is disabled too. Otherwise people could upload a photo of basicly everything, including *** pictures.
i’m not surprised at Yoshida-san’s announcement…it’s typical of $ony to do that and leave people hanging. take for example, their so called PS3PSP/Vita RemotePlay. ugh! no game (I think except Ico/ShadowOfColosus) works on RemotePlay! and the PS3 screenshot feature, $ony says it’s built in the PS3 and they leave it to developers to implement it per game…and voila, no dev implements it!
so I say: F@CK this “share” button! as usual, they leave it to devs, and no dev will implement it, of course!
