PS4 to support 4k Resolution?
We all know the Next Generation of consoles is coming soon and rumors have been around but, BGR which is a credible news source is claiming they have the first inside information on the PS4. Supposedly, the next iteration of the PlayStation will support a native 4,000 resolution.
That’s an incredible 4x increase over the current 1080p resolution. Of course this fits exactly inline with Sony’s new 80-inch XBR LED TV set with a 4K resolution announced. This could be the start of a new revolution like how the PS3 had the blu-ray. Sony hasn’t confirmed this and only time will tell if its true.
If this is to be true though, how does Sony plan to make a push for 4k when current consoles haven’t conquered 1080? Let alone it’ll require you to upgrade your TV and most people wont want to drop $30,000 on a new TV to be able to use that feature. It would be a nice option to have and gaming with that resolution sounds like a dream. As long as it doesn’t make the PS4 extremely expensive, I’m all for it. With that said, i hope to see a new model of the vita incorporate some of Sony’s new resolution advancements to rival that of the retina display.
exactly, even if ps4 has 4k resolution, who would even fork up that much money for that tv.. even $10,000 is too much for a tv
Remember that HDMI 1.4 only allows for 4K @ 24fps, and that’s not expected to be upgraded any time soon. So a 4K-capable PS4 would be able to play back 4K movies, but it would be effectively worthless for gaming.
Wouldn’t the res actually be increased 16x? Increasing a side’s length has an exponential effect on the total screen area so I believe this is the case.
And since 1080p is about 2MPs that means the ps4 should support 32MPs. Wow.
it’s probably 2×2
4,000p? Hmm, if Ubisoft releases Beyond good and evil 2 for the PS4, then im REALLY going to buy it. The thing is, that wouldn’t 4,000p require an extremely expensive TV? It seems that my oldie 1980 Sony TV wont support the PS4 xD
More realistically. I’m thinking we’ll only be seeing 1440p or something else inbetween.
gracias sony
always suprises us
Makes sense. It’s more future-proofing it, when this thing comes out it’ll have to last 7-8 years, by then we’ll all have 4k displays I bet.
much like the ps3 supports sdtv the ps4 will most likely support 1080p
Come on?There is no way in heck it’s going to be 4000.Use your heads.
What the??! 4K resolution??! how much…???!
480p: 720 × 480 (0.3 megapixels)
720p: 1280 x 720 (0.9 megapixels)
1080p: 1920 x 1080 (2.07 megapixels)
4k: 4096 x 3072 (12.6 megapixels)
Wouldn’t the 4k be the vertical resolution like in all other resolutions? 1920/1080=1.778, 4096*1.778=7282. So that would mean the new resolution will be 7282*4096. That is 29.8 megapixels.
On a side note, I really don’t think the ps4 will be released any time soon. Sony has the luxury of having way better specs in their console than their competitor. Xbox is already pushing it’s limits and ps3 exclusives are graphically far superior to xbox titles. Sony would be wise to wait and see what Microsoft comes up with.
No… just by doing a quick Google search you can see that the resolution is 4096×3072. Why does everyone have to fill the internet with their thoughts rather than giving specifications, facts and useful information. Sony would be stupid to let Microsoft beat them to the market. This is the reason the 360 took off so well when it was first released. It had absolutely no competition unless you count the wii, which I don’t.
The GFX card of the PS4 should be able to handle a 4k resolution and display port 1.2 should also be able to handle a 4k video stream.
As we already reach the limits of a reasonable polygon count, a 4k rendered game won’t be much of a problem, if the PS4 resembles a high end PC of the time it releases. So it is a nice option for future TVs and also, if we won’t all have 4k TVs until then, it is still nice to have games rendered in 4k and downscaled into 1080 for true antialaising.
the leaked specs suggests a AMD Radeon HD 7650, that’s anything but high-end
which means the “leaked” specs are BS
Or this is BS, or most likely both are BS.
We really need to get out of the polygon area, or at least find a way to make ray tracing and other form of 3D much more usable in a interactive setting. It really sucks when we have all these advancementson the PC
uhhhhhh….. no one anounce didly squat about any new consoles and they are not coming out soon because there is a new graphics engine coming in a year or two called atom. if you havent heard it beilds every thing with atoms.
Actually you are talking about voxel rendering, we can render voxel worlds fine atm but the issue is animation and storage… There aren’t any feasible voxel engines even in development (there is one scammy one that keeps on fooling stupid people on youtube)
As for the consoles sony has stated they want it out in the next two years.
Unlimited detail, lol, it has yet to happen.
I don’t care what *** console Sony or any other companies came up or whatever *** gimmicks they will came up with.
I’m PC GAMER fo’ LIFE
….I’m not saying the same for handhelds, I like portable gaming
Problem with PC gaming IMHO is that it is EXTREMELY overpriced for what it really is.
Very are very few PC only games, and these tend to be MMO’s.
But with PC gaming, you really need a new pc from scratch every 3 years, anyone “slightly” hardcore switches closer to every 2 years. Over a 8 year period (basicly the life of a console) your paying over $3000 on hardware alone.
Not to mention that it isnt as comfortable, i would rather lay in my sofa or moving my ps3 to the bedroom so i can play in bed with my ps3/360 then having to sit by my desk.
The only genre that is a lot better on PC is RTS/Strategy + MMO’s, thats sadly terrible on consoles. But when it comes to everything else, nah.
If you spent 3k on a computer it wouldn’t need to be scrapped in three years unless you want to stay on the bleeding edge.
Pirate cat: I did not mean spending 3k on a PC in one go. What i was comparing was the cost of a console over a 8 year period (basicly how often a new console is released) vs a PC over that time.
UnknowablE: 200 a year will do it in the short run, but when you need to change motherboard, ram, cpu etc, its more of an expensive upgrade. I suppose if you have the time to buy and sell parts forward and back you can manage, but at least for me, i value my time to much to be doing that, i would rather work a few hours overtime and spend a bit more.
Anyhows, point is still the same, it is a LOT more expensive and i feel the lack of exclusives dont really make it worth it.
Yes ofc you can play with a controller with bluetooth, but you would be compleatly raped by players with a keyboard and mouse. I find fps more fun when with a controller as it becomes a bit more laid back, everyones on the same hardware no cheats (well at least a lot less).
Anyway, thats just my view, might have someting with me working with it that puts me off spending more time then i need to at a pc 🙂
Actually fps, mmo, strategy and the indie scene are best on pc… also with the ability to connect a ps3 controller to any computer with a bluetooth connection.
Ofcourse then the computer can be used for much more than pure gaming and while you *** about the cost, we are talkinga bout keeping a pc at MAXIMUM graphics… The graphical elements on pc games far outshine anything seen on a console.
Basically it boils down to how much money you have to spare and what else you can get out of a computer experience.
Computers can eaisly be hooked up to a tv, have controllers and have bluetooth kebyoards and mice so all the desk stuff is just stupid.
Oh and as for me, I spend $200 a year on computer upgrades (hard drive additions not included) and sell my old computer each year, it gives me enough money that with $200 added to the sale price I can buy a new and current generation machine that plays everything on high.
heck if you count steam sales you can even say it evens out in price when compared to consoles.
oh and mods… mods are fantastic.
You do understand that this is an console blog.. 4k resolution, sound really awesome.. But the price for example Radeon HD 7970 is 489$ so i doubt that PS4 will be less than 700$.. but who knows what Sony could came up..
And by that time there’d be a good NV/AMD card on the next series (8XXXHD/ GTX 7XX).
W/c I am sure, Day 1, has better graphics.
(Then again polished consoles exclusives look great for the their cost.. Then again new console would cost a lot too soo…).
Not to mention that usualy the makers of the consoles actually make a loss the first period. Your quoting retail prices. a mass prodcution of those chips might cost what… 30%, proberbly less. Not to mention that ps4 is least a year away by that time IF they where using somthing simmilar im guessing thy would be spending under $100 for it.
Not to mention that $700 isnt that bad these days for a console on release. You have to remember there has been some inflation since ps3 was released (15-20%) so ~honestly, 8-900 would be on par with what the releasecost of the ps3 was.
nice one sony as soon as i think im happy with what i have, u dash my hopes and empty my wallet at the same time
Dont worry guys, if it’s not compatible with your current tv Sony will naturally include the standard RCA cord for you. Lol, that’s a joke and yet probably true. I have a coworker who had a Ps3 and was using RCA cables. I told him I could get the HDMI cable for him for .99 cents on eBay and the shipping is free. I imagine you’ll be able to use the cord from your Ps1 too. Lol.
I don’t get it… are you saying this is a bad thing? I always liked how accessible Sony’s systems were.
4k resolution will not make a game “more fun” to play. good game design is lacking. Smaller indie game companies are creating really impressive, fun to play, and creative games. It’s nice sony is adding the ability to do that, but then comes a new tv and extra stuff that really shouldn’t be needed.
It will make my video editing more enjoyable and could make certain experiences more immersive
Dude! I just got a refurbished: 47inch, LCD HDTV, 1080P, 120HZ, 100000:1 contrast ratio, 2ms response, smart tv.
On tiger direct for 500 dollars!!!!
What the heck else do I ever need to buy!
In order to play one sony game you need: 3D glasses ($50)
PS3 ($300) Motion controllers ($100) PS3 3D TV 24inch or so ($500) and the game ($60) and if your playing an online game thats $20 a month.
All together you just spent $1000 just to play a sony game that isnt that good to begin with. Most people live paycheck to paycheck, and this is why sony looses so much money in the stock market. I will never be able to afford to be a sony gamer. It used to be about giving the gamers what they want at an affordable price but sony have turned into yet another money absorbing corporation.
What the heck are you talking about?
You don’t “need” any of that, except for the PS3 and the TV (that you already have).
No one is forcing you to play in 3D or with motion controls, and most of the games that support those doesn’t require them.
Also, there is no subscribtion fee to use a PS3 and play games online.
There is PS+ but it isn’t required for any online features, and the price is not even close to 20$ a month. Even Xbox Live is far from 20$ so I have no idea what you were thinking when saying that. In fact, all of these false accusations can be applied to Microsoft and their console, so don’t even try to blame Sony.
Also, even if you live paycheck to paycheck it is still very easy to afford to be a “Sony gamer”. Sounds like you’re just a fanboy of another system and you are raging at Sony for no reason. And no, I am not a Sony fanboy, so that’s not why I wrote this comment.
I’m a PC gamer but unlike you, I respect other people’s opinion.
Though I actually used to own a 360, but I sold it because I didn’t enjoy it, and it has become apparent to me that Sony’s console is superior.
Anyway, just thought I’d waste a few minutes of my time writing this response to your dumb comment, since I didn’t have anything better to do right now.
I apologize for any spelling and grammatical mistakes in this post, as I wrote it on my phone which has a cracked screen.
Did you even read your post? I’m not normally one to insult people, I promise, but that is the most *** thing I’ve read all day. Lets break this down:
PS3 ($300): Obviously you’ll need this so that’s 300
Motion Controllers($100): Only if you’re playing a game that uses motion controls, and even than, they’re not $100, so we’ll take that out
PS3 3D TV + 3D glasses ($500+$50): You’d only need this stuff if you’re playing 3D games and even than you don’t need to get that TV, you can find better 3D TVs for 500 or less and those tend to come with 2-4 pairs of glasses which means you likely won’t need to buy extras. You can play the PS3 on any SDTV or monitor which you’d probably have without having a PS3 so we can take that out.
Game ($60): Yes, that is the price of a new game. However prices are constantly dropping and there’s always the used games which can go for super cheap. But sure, lets say you’re buying a new game, that’s $60
Online Gaming ($20 a month): I don’t even know what you’re getting at here. The only subscription service Sony has is PS+ which has no impact on online gaming. To play a game on the PS3 online is 100% free. Unless you’re talking about monthly internet costs for your ISP which is a null point. Having an internet connection is pretty much required in this day and age and I highly doubt you’d have one just for gaming (not saying it can’t happen, it’s just highly unlikely)
So, assuming you have a working TV already and an internet connection. All it takes to enjoy your first brand new PS3 game is a whopping $360. And as I said, that’s only for the first since after that you’re only paying for the game and that’s gonna be there with every system.
Not only are you pulling out ridiculous figures and over exaggerating the costs. But you’re going over the fact that when the proprietary memory gets cracked and the cost of memory cards goes down, being a “Sony gamer” is the cheapest way to game next to being a nintendo gamer
4k & 8k, exactly why I haven’t updated.
Update all your hardware just to rebuy it in the next decade…yeah, I think not.
Blu-ray, Green-ray call it what you want to call it, holding back the market is all I see, GREED.
Next gen consoles, like this gen and gas prices, they’ll have the same ***…there is no competition, soon Chinese knock offs will be all the consumer needs.
Riiight… So how are you enjoying your VHS tapes and dial-up connection? Things have been getting updated like this throughout all of time, or at least since the 30’s. heck in ten years we went from the GBA to the 3DS. What do you want them to do, hold off this technology for 30 years and then suddenly spout it out all at once?
Also, this is a rumor, only last year were 4k projectors beginning to enter outside the business market. Most likely this new system would have an upscaler chip to export a 4k resolution, similar to how the xbox does 1080p.
PS3 supports 1080p too!
But the graphically demanding games run at 720p native LMAO.. even lower! (Crysis 2 on the PS3 is 1024 x 7XX)
4K support doesn’t mean much.
My 190 dollar GPU can do x6 1080p monitors (AMD 5870 2GB Flex).. but craps itself on Metro 2033 highest settings @ 1080p (not steady fps).
wololo i tink if we could decode the ps vita system for each downloaded games on psn we can share it. the one reason why i open this cos i have tried to download games on a different accounted and copying it on my present account but sadly it says you cant copy this application on your account. something like that… is there any ways we can transfer a downloaded games to another account?…
No.
In the end who cares if it supports 4k 8k 16k or just 1080p. I bet most people here will buy it anyways. Why? because when no one plays black ops 2 with you on your damn ps3 youll end up getting it to play black ops 7 or whatever the heck is popular by then.
even if it supports 4k, itll probably be scaled and only apply to playback of blue/green/red/purple or whatever ray is out. Those will cost 2-4 more times than a standard dvd and the experience will only be minimally better. Also if an ipad cost around 300 dollars with its *** hardware (compared to a pc and console), than no way in heck is ti going to be worth less than that.
resolution 4K ? So making a game would take longer than a year
well da new graphics sound good n all but i alwas wanted a consle dat can do more then jus play games but does dis mean dat the ps4 will be able to do does 3d displays like da 3d image they made for tupac
