Glevand’s CFW: boot into Linux at startup from your PS3 slim
I suck, I’m so lazy I’m putting a phat here, while I’m mostly talking of the Slim in the article…
Those of you who are missing the joys of having a true 100% support of otherOS will be delighted: developer glevand released yesterday a patched Custom Firmware that allows him to boot his PS3 Slim directly into petitboot.
For those who don’t know, petitboot is a bootloader, similar to grub on Linux, allowing you to choose which OS to boot your machine on at startup. In this case, you get the choice between OtherOS (Linux) and GameOS (regular PS3 XMB)
This opens the door to a bunch of cool things to do with your PS3.

Note, I haven’t personally tried this yet. Always use common sense when you’re installing a CFW on your console!

You can install it over an other CFW, basically.
Either way, you need to be on 3.55 somehow to install this.
I would love to beable to do things like this to my Xbox 360, but it doesn’t seem as easy.
Actually, I’d say it’s even easier on the 360 (ofcourse, presuming your console is already hacked with JTAG or RGH) all you have to do there is to boot xell (using the eject button of the console) and that will launch Linux from whatever media you have it on, for example a live cd that you burned. As for the news, this is great! Something I’ve been waiting for. But I wonder if this CFW has everything that kmeaw has + more or if changing to this CFW would limit me in any way. Also from the screenshot I don’t see the “run GameOS” button?? And what is Igloo-OS?
Xbox is much easier to flash or mod… Much easier to take apart also…
