This is not a big surprise, it had been spotted 3 weeks ago, firmware 4.20 is incoming on the PS3, and “only” brings sounds improvements as well as savegame management improvements.
So, nothing much to see here… One would expect a 4.x type of update to be quite massive, but that’s not the case unfortunately. The firmware should be available later today according to the official playstation blog

1.80 is the next expected firmware, not 2.0. Besides that, 1.8 isn’t even out yet and looks like it will be released towards the end of summer, which sucks. That’s why I hate Sony in that they never give (close to) solid dates.
PS vita update coming soon I guess? In my opinion a breakthrough vita update would require an update on the ps3.

Find out what features are included in PS3 system software update 4.20.
An update to the PS3 system software was released on 20 June 2012. If you update your PS3 system, the system software version will be 4.20 and the following features will be updated. In order to download PS3 system software version 4.20, you will need a minimum 200MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).
Main features in system software update version 4.20
Settings
Under Settings > [Power Save Settings] > [System Auto-Off], you can now set the amount of time until the system automatically turns off for [Video/TV/Music/Photo] and for [Game/Other Features].
Games
Under Games > [Saved Data Utility (PS3™)], you can now select multiple saved data items, and then either delete or copy them as a group.
Wireless Stereo Headset
When the wireless stereo headset (CECHYA-0080) is connected, you can now adjust the sidetone level for microphone audio. Select [Sidetone] under Settings > [Accessory Settings] > [Audio Device Settings].
In addition, if you use the Wireless Stereo Headset to watch Blu‐ray Disc or DVD movies on your PS3 system, this system software update will also enable virtual surround sound functionality giving you a superior audio experience.
Other new or revised features in version 4.20
Settings
Under [Date and Time Settings] > [Time Zone], [Samoa Islands] has been changed to [American Samoa] and [Independent State of Samoa].
Other
The encryption key has been renewed for AACS, the copy protection system for Blu-ray Disc video content. If you see a message regarding encryption key renewal during playback of commercially available BD video software (BD-ROM), update the system software to the latest version. The encryption key will then be automatically renewed.
Note:
Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PS3 system software.
Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PS3 system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PS3 system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. The ps3 4.20 update also changed the browser i have seen, so now you only need to allow flash once per session instead of multiple times per page which was really annoying.
Wololo, you should hold back on vhbl exploits for a while and create vhbl exploits for enough games that sony would not be able to remove them from psn all at once because this would cause them to lose revenue.
I’ve thought about this but this is lots of work, and close to nobody is helping me. I thought by now we’d have an army of people porting VHBL to more game, but people who have the skills are not interested in doing it, and it takes lots of my free time to help people who are interested in doing it but lack the skills.
You must train that army and when they are train the vita will be doing amazingly from the emulator appeal
He technically has. Wololo provides the necessary information to find VHBL on mostly all of the related posts. But actually digging deeper into the method can be hazardous as we are not alone. Sony is watching this blog and if Wololo goes too far deep into how to find VHBLs, Sony can find out and put a stop to it much more quickly than they do now.
You’re right. Wololo is essentially training poeple through his informative blog posts, though honestly I’m not suprised that he doesn’t have an army of poeple helping him already. There are a lot of poeple with free time and interest but none of the skills to get any further than crashing a game. Sometimes, the crash logs that are posted on here do lead to a useful exploit but if the person is unable to judge for himself whether it useless or not, the work will just get handed over to someone else, mainly Wololo.
You can offer a reward or do a contest of some sort like the previous one. You could offer the price of the game the xploit is used with to anyone who ports it to that save file. Just an idea…..
