Unboxing the Playstation Vita
Well, yeah… after the news of the first hack, I had to get mine… I went extremely minimal though, getting the wifi model and the smallest possible memory card (4GB). Here’s the obligatory “let’s look what’s inside” video. Surprise, surprise, there’s a manual, a USB cable, an ac adapter, the console itself, and that’s pretty much it 🙂
The PS Vita is surprisingly light compared to the PSP 1000. I’ll try to share some details about hacking possibilities in another post, let me just say that it won’t be a piece of cake (even through the PSP emulator hack…)
Heh… i was thinking you wont buy any sony product a.k.a boycott… ahh never mind… ohh yeah btw we can now have a image of you wololo on the Vita screen =)
Yes. But as I stated, more than half of the readers of this blog plan to get a Vita sometimes in 2011/2012, so I felt I “had” to follow the community on this one.
I *do* feel bad about not keeping my word on boycotting Sony, it has to be the first time I made a promise on this blog that I didn’t keep 🙁
Hopefully as a counterpart I’ll be able to contribute usefully to making this device more interesting than what it is now 😉
Hate to say I told you so.
From now onwards you have no right to criticize Sony. You have granted them the right to screw you and other customers. What about that “Getting a Vita without giving Sony any money”? All lies.
And yo know best than anyone a true hack to put there HBL will take more time. Your “half of the readers” excuse is so sad to read, you didn’t have any obligation to follow suite.
Shame on you. I used to respect you.
*** up. He has more respect than you will ever have. Nobody.
@Lawfer
I totally agree.
@Wololo
It does indeed sound weird why you stopped ‘boycotting’ Sony.. You bought it, because you wanted one. It’s as simple as that. You could have posted news about the Vita without actually owning one. There are other trusted people who can verify if a new hack is legit or not.
By saying you will be boycotting Sony by not buying anything from them ever again, and breaking those very words within the first couple of days Sony’s new device enters the stores, makes you look really silly. (I’ll keep it civil ^^)
I’ll be carrying on with my ‘boycott’ of Sony. My Psp will be the last thing I’ve ever bought from them. If my Psp needs replacement, I’ll be looking for a handheld which is open from the very start. Devices like the Caanoo, the Pandora, or who knows, maybe even a future gaming handheld powered by Android. Time will tell Lol.
Wololo, have fun with your new toy 🙂
One minor comment though: I won’t blog about a console I don’t own, or not on a regular basis. First because I would lack interest, and second because I would lack the knowledge on the console. Now when I blog about stuff happening on the vita, I know what I’m talking about, and I can verify what’s going on.
Yeah i hope that some good exploits might appear soon.. and yeah wololo i dont blame you cause you buyed Vita… its your decision.. any way im not to rich to buy VITA.. here it will cost around 360-400 euros.. yeah here PSP still costs 150 euros.. ill pass on this one.. maybe later.. like with PSP i did.. 2005 launch of PSP i bought in 2010.. the same with VITA maybe later in 2017..
This hacking ***, is just going to bring piracy to the PS Vita. Sooner or later……
next thing you know, we have so called “Backup” support.
I don’t pirate, I don’t have any plan to enable piracy on the PS Vita, and I was never directly involved in a single hack that enabled piracy. The only hack I was directly involved with was HBL, a system that allows to run user mode homebrews on the PSP and does not infringe on any of Sony’s intellectual property. To some extent, my work allowed several user mode exploits to be created, and none of them was ever used directly to enable piracy, since it wasn’t technically possible.
I have the same basic goal for the PS Vita.
So I’m going to assume your comment is not directed at me.
Of course not master wololo (you probably know who I am anyway). But you do except CFW on this site’, which you know can play pirated games on a PSP.
Point taken
the problem is that sony always put a ”security” on their consoles that doesnt make it possible to program any homebrew for it. so people seek ways around this which almost always end up in ”’backup” support
so if they give the homebrew dev’s more freedom this time they might save themself alot of trouble. and it helps to sell the psvita aswell. it shouldt be that hard anyway. just make the console only run unsigned programs from the user memory stick and when you try to run anything signed from it that is supposed to be a full retail game do you get an error. of course could this be hacked too but when that happens does sony have a legit reason to complain about it.
What do you mean by freednom? And if it wasnt for sony you wouldnt have a PSP or PS3.
if is wasnt for sony, geohots didnt got a lawsuit
my point is that consoles always get hacked to run people their own programs on it.
you can compare it with this:
if you have a car that does every thing you want, you won’t open it.
but when you have a car that doesnt do what you want and you know how to make it better, you will try to do that, and while you are messing with the car do you figure out how you can make it faster, even when you didnt intend to do that in the first place. but hey, the car is already opened up so why not doing that too.
this may not be completely accurate about how it really goes with the psp/ps3/psvita hacking, but my point is that if you give less people a reason to hack you console there will be a smaller chance people will find critical security flaws which will result in piracy.
Some part of me just knew you were going to get the Vita anyway. =P
I don’t blame you in the slightest for not keeping your word as I probably would have done the same thing.
Please post some more info about the device as you get to know it better!
Wololo,
SO jealous watching the unboxing. We’ll talk soon. I wanna see that baby in action! BTW, did you get any games?
Regards,
npt
I am keeping the boycot, but not cause of Sony. Mainly because allot people (inc. me) just cant say screw the boycot lets go spend 500 euro sonyware. I don’t think this console is worth the price. Mobile devices are already better, laptops, smart phones, tablets, …
I think you bought it to breach its soft- & hardware security more then to play games on it. In that opinion; you just bought an packed present and once its unpacked its done playing. In essence your not supporting Sony. Sony doesn’t make money on the console, they actually lose money on it. (games, memory sticks, … make sony rich)
I hope they wait untill its released in the us before they release any good exploits. It would suck if they found an exploit and it got hardware blocked by the time it came to the us
Congrats on getting a PS Vita! 😀
I still do not plan on buying one, it doesn’t interest me at all…….. yay it’s a psp with better graphics, how boring.
I also have to say that I’m kinda disappointed that you changed your mind about this boycott…. It’s your decision of course, and i still have respect for you as a developer, and i know the temptation to own the latest gadget can be strong…….. but someone has to stand up to companies like Sony, and Apple, who seek to punish their customers simply for trying to extend the functionality of devices they bought and paid for with their own hard earned cash.
Anyway, enjoy it….. I don’t think anyone has a right to be mad, considering all that you’ve done for the PSP hacking community, and for Wagic.
Its the “extension” of these functionalities that affects not only you but the community of PSP users. So it does have an affect on these big companies.
Any company that would aggressivly pursue a harmless geek for simply trying to extend the funtionality of a device he bought and paid for with his own money instead of pursuing those who are actually DISTRIBUTING pirated software, is NOT a company that ANYONE should do business with….. wololo understood that at one time, and likely still does, he simply gave in to a moment of weakness.
Its ok if you yourself extends these functionalities without public distribution but this isnt the case. When a so-called “harmless geek” decides to publicly distribute his or hers exploits/CFW that can enable the user to play “back ups”/pirated games or is against the Terms and conditions, it is definetly going to be an issue for Sony.
Going by YOUR logic, cassette recorders, and CD burners should have never been invented because they made it easier for pirates….. but then the amateur video and audio movements would have never happened, much hidden talent would have never been discovered and the world would have been a much more boring place.
Sony is a company that has long been involved in making audio and video recording equipment in the past, and yet they are against someone extending the functionality of their PS3 or PSP…….. anyone with even half a brain can see the hypocrisy in that!
Yup, betamax is the best example of that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Corp._of_America_v._Universal_City_Studios,_Inc.
Sony sold a device that allowed people to pirate movies and got sued for it by Universal. Sony won, and history told us that this device (VHS tapes) became one of the major source of revenues of the movie industry for the next decade.
Sony is now on the other side of the fence, and would probably tear to pieces any individual who would try to provide an equivalent system nowadays.
Part of the court decision: “the business of supplying the equipment that makes such copying feasible should not be stifled simply because the equipment is used by some individuals to make unauthorized reproductions of respondents’ works….”.
The analogy with custom firmwares here is quite strong imo 🙂
@Lorz. This is Sony’s past (*** up issues, I have to agree) and I dont know whether you are thanking them or showing your disapproval. One more thing, you are missing the point, if someone privately extends the functionalities of thier device it is ok but when distributed publicly…. ahhh you get the point.
Amigo.. congrats on the Vita! Have you found a way to transfer anything to the mem card with out having to use sony’s software to do the transfer?
I no ones remember he said a few months back he wanted the uncharted games, so if someone loves the uncharted games as most do there is no way you can be left behind without getting a vita, and more over if you live where is in the streets already.
And more over everyman have the rigth to play with toys 😀 expensive toys of course.
And hacking into it is a grate challenge for any developer that is into the scene.
@Wololo the ps vita web browser can run youtube videos?
sorry for my bad english im from Puerto Rico
cool..i’m not buying one anyway 🙂 maybe after 1 or 2 years..
Let us know if the Emulator will run Wagic! 😀
jealous face 😀
I don’t know about all you other people, but i can totally picture this site turning into a site for vita hacks and mods when the psp platform is completely dropped by sony. witch would be unhelpful to me cuz im not buyin a vita XD
It’s amazing how angry people get over this. I personally loved the Psp, put so many hours on each one that I owened that it made them worth every cent. The vita is becoming a quick favorite of mine. I think it’s twice the machine the psp was.
I can understand people getting upset about a word not being kept but come on. By boycotting sony nothing will change, nothing will happen. That money they lost from the people who didn’t buy it probably made up .000001% of their profits anyway.
So whine, ***, moan, groan, and throw a fit because wololo bought in, and see that you are doing nothing to change anything. the only thing that is happeneing is you sitting at home with no, or old technology while the world advances around you.
Sony will continue to profit and make more money that we can imagine and fight a rediculous fight day after day and still with or without you it’s gonna happen.
So bash on anyone who broke the “boycott” but do it because a promise was broken and not because they bought it. And you can sit back and watch them enjoy the heck outta a really awesome piece of technology while you sit with your hands in your pants in your mothers basement.
Just saying the world moves on, and these few little things don’t even dent the flow.
