Will you boycott Sony’s products?
Recently Sony sued hacker George Hotz for jailbreaking his PS3. This raised anger from many devs, security researchers, or associations protecting Freedom of Speech such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and even led the Hacktivist group Anonymous to start attacks and protests against Sony.
Although the case ended up being settled outside of court, some people, including George Hotz, called for a massive boycott of Sony’s products.
This site is in an awkward position regarding this, being on both the side of hackers, customers, and gamers, so I was wondering… will the audience of this blog (and our forums) start boycotting Sony’s products? A poll was opened on our forums on /Talk, and I’d love to see your opinion on the subject.
As far as I’m concerned, the answer is yes, as I stated before, I am not buying any Sony product again, but I’m wondering what other people will do. If we get enough answers, this might show a good trend of the impact this lawsuit had on Sony’s image, and I’ll post the results here.

No, I will not boycotting sony products..They still make the best products around. I don’t think I am gonna give up on new technological products they make because of this incident.
Yes I am going to boycott Sony products because I already hate them anyways. Their products are sub par and they have repeatedly proved their stupidity.
Yes you can boycott sony’s console products but the only success that sony can sell their product is by the kids or younger age minded. Adult like us most do agree but what if our little children cry and beg to buy one PSP,PS3 and NGP? boycotting is meaningless for spoiled childrens demands.

Why boycott? Just buy used. You’re not giving money to sony if you buy a pre-owned whatever-it-is.
Yeah, pretty much, I bought all my PSPs used.
Yeah. I already abstain from Sony’s other products, because they’re sub-par. But I’m no longer buying any Sony consoles. The ergonomics of the NGP especially suck donkey ***, so there’s no reason and no desire to buy any Sony consoles in the near future. Add that to the company’s recent behavior and the prospect of buying from Sony becomes even less palatable.
No, I will not boycott Sony products. The company may be a ***, but they make good products.
I also like sony’s products. Sony makes quality product and it is proven, I owned a sony TV for almost 17 years and honestly it is still functioning.
All I can do is to boycott their gaming consoles.

This is not a simple Black and White issue, for many reasons. (a) Probably not all of Sony as a Corporation is represented by its actions against hackers. (b) It is further complicated by the fact that it is a good consumer electronics company.
Here is my stance. I will support Sony lesser than before. Unfortunately, my love for the PS3 and PlayStation brand is high. But needless to say it has been tarnished significantly due to recent events. If Microsoft can make a killer XBOX 360 successor and integrate it thoroughly into its mobile devices I may forget my plans to purchase NGP and make a killer NGP/PS3 or NGP/PS4 combo. I will go over to XBOX and start going for Nintendo. heck, it will make me happy that I am on a winning paltform (a.k.a. 3DS) compared to NGP!
I will also spread the message as much as possible and try to persuade others into buying alternative products.
As of now, my gaming future looks like 3DS + PS3 (for the time being) and later XBOX 720 or whatever it is called.
Although SONY’s recent actions have infuriated me, I don’t plan on boycotting their products, alternatively, I will by only used, pre-owned, or refurbished SONY consoles. Just because SONY sucks doesn’t mean third-party devs deserve to be overlooked because their product is for a SONY machine.
i’ll boycott anything sony made and isn’t hackable, so when i’ll get something hackable it will be like a big mid finger to sony when i’ll hack it (via a method invented by real hackers)
oh and buying pre owned sony stuff won’t give a jack of my money to sony so i think i can do that too.

I can bet this boycott will be soon forgoten, and the mayority of people taking part on it will buy a NGP or other new Sony devices and act innocent.
Good luck boycotting Sony. Their stuff is EVERYWHERE. Just to name one example: If you own a PC chances are the button cells on your mainboard are made by Sony. So saying “I won’t buy any Sony product again” is quite pointless.

Im getting a PS2,just to hack it about a month after I buy it.And that pretty much the bottom line.
The PS2 is cheap,I’m getting only 3 cheap games and a cheap Memory Card.That wont really help Sony…

Yes, I´ll boycott Sony´s product´s too, they have already *** me off with their expensive products, such as the ps3. I was going to buy one (the first ones that came to mexico) but when I noticed the price, I changed my mind, It costed more than 10000 pesos! (about 1000dollars)
even when i boycott sony there shall not change much. i own my psp 3000 for about 10 months and i am not planning to buy an ngp. before the boycott it was a maybe (and then i mean really maybe) but now it is just a no.
the only reason why i shall buy a ngp is when it is hacked and i can play N64 games on it (or gamecube if it is possible).
however, i hope the NGP will stay alive cuz if not, nintendo can bring out the most *** consoles and people buy it just cuz they are the only one in the portable market.

Sony hasn’t proven that they lost money because of geohot’s work. In most countries, unless proven guilty, one is innocent.

Yes, I have added Sony to the products that I boycott as well as any company linked to them. I have owned five Toytoas, own two new ones, now, if they ever put a Sony product in them it will cost them my business. I encourage others to do the same. My reason is for the Sony Musi Entertianment on blocking youtube users from includng songs in playback lists. I may also boycott any artists whose music is blocked by Sony. I have also added any Sony Google products that are linked to Sony.

if i wanted to take my ps3 and break it up, *** on the main board and *** all over the controllers, i should be allowed to do it…if i want to change that *** ps3 start up screen into something much cooler i should be able to do it, if i want to code my OWN games on the platform i purchased with MY hard work and money…..guess what….i should be able to do it…sony’s lawsuit was basically their way of saying “you can’t run any other software but ours on that system” …some people want to run linux on their ps3s, which they purchased with their money….why can’t you?
