Genesis competition: new sponsors and a recap
We’re happy to announce that a new sponsor has joined the Genesis competition, the website XtreamLua.com. I must apologize here as they actually joined us several weeks ago, and we’ve been a bit slow on updating the official page.
Anyways, the website and the splash screen are now updated, so if you plan to join the competition or if you update your entry, please think of updating the splash screen as well.
What is this?
The Genesis competition is a programming contest for the Sony PSP. It is sponsored by all the major sites of the PSP underground scene: psp-hacks.com, pspgen.com, wololo.net, exophase.com, daxhordes.org, xtreamlua.com, pspslimhacks.com, pspcustomfirmware.com, and gamegaz.jp.
If you’re a homebrew developer, you might have seen many homebrew contests organized by various websites. What’s very different about this contest is that your favorite websites decided to team up together, in order to offer you the biggest homebrew contest ever. The first prize for the contest is the impressive amount of 1900$. And we’re not talking of a discount coupon in some electronics store, but actual cash money. On top of that, the first prize is not the only thing to win. The total amount of prizes is estimated at about 4750$, most of it being cash, and spread among a variety of prizes (as far as wololo.net is concerned, a 100$ donation will go to my favorite open source entry, and we’ll also give 100$ to the best entry as voted by /talk members).
Who can enter?
Well, basically if you are a homebrew programmer, feel free to join the fun. You can see the full rules on the official page here.
There are so far roughly 30 entries in the contest, and we have 11 prizes to give away. If I were to play on words, I’d say that’s roughly one chance out of 3 to win…and what if I tell you that the lowest prize is 100$? That’s good motivation to join, right?
There’s still exactly 1 month to submit your entries. If you haven’t started already, that’s still a good amount of time to get a nice little homebrew ready. If you’ve been secretely working on a massive project for the past months… well, we can’t wait to see what you’ll submit to the contest 🙂
There are a few things I want to emphasize, one month before the deadline:
First, keep in mind that this is by far the most massive homebrew competition you’ll ever see for the PSP. If you were thinking of programming a homebrew, or submitting an update to your old 1.XX homebrew to make it compatible with new firmwares, now’s the best time!
Second, we’ve seen people being afraid that some “minor” homebrews might be outshadowed by “massive” entries. Please keep in mind that the judges for this event are spread over various communities (most of the sponsors will organize votes on their forums), with various tastes and goals. The same goes for the “official” judges of the competition, who have all been involved in the scene for years, and all have a different vision of what constitutes a “winner”. We will do our best to be fair in judging this competition 🙂
Keep the entries coming, you still have until may 15th
late comers!
I got a full project idea but I’m sure I wouldn’t stand a chance against some other big projects, ergo I’ll see when I feel like programming it (one day …)
Allright there are several projects, but for instance I’m sure forum’s choices will choose those too, simply why wouldn’t they ?? lol
Ergo just I’ll do it when I feel like it. Else if then, the psp has died I’ll just have to choose another platform lol.
Thank for adding us!
@Yosh : Consider that big project usually have issues in beeing ready on time, precisly because they are so big. And anyway, a project doesn’t have to be big to be fun, concept and gameworld are, in my opinion, the main factors for a a good game 😉
okay right.
I’ll see if I can find some time in this last month then, maybe in upcoming holidays if I’m not too busy.
u should do 1

One question can i do the codding and that *** in sdl basic??? PLz reply i want to know
Yes if your eboot ends up being a standalone homebrew. We don’t want people to have to download the interpreter separately, etc…
another question what do u mean by (if your eboot ends up being a standalone homebrew. We don’t want people to have to download the interpreter separately, etc…)
Cant i have an eboot that loads my homebrew in a .sdlbas file ???
Yes.
The idea is that your homebrew should work “out of the box” without people needing to download anything else.
KK thx a lot i had to read it a couple of times cause i dint undestand lets say im under 14 but anyways thx’s i got the point 😉
kk thx ill try to understand a little bit more ill tell my team thx again
Thank you for the encouragements !
Two questions:
The homebrew can be a port of PC game who has not never ported to PSP?
In this case should I ask the authorization to the author to use his code source for the participation to the GENESIS competition?
yes, and yes.
If you’re making a port, most likely a huge part of your code will have been written by this person/team. Because of the amounts of money at stake, we want to make sure they now about the contest.
