    glad that your back wololo

  2. ros says:

but wololo, the Sony Life thingy might be (or probably) from a completely different secter of the company(like yamaha making moterbikes and yamaha making pianos) so there isn’t really a point of boycotting from them is it ?

  3. Caio says:

As a fan of Japanese RPG’s – Final Fantasy included – I find it hard to boycott Sony products, especially looking at what the competition has to offer.

Also, Sony requested access to Geohot’s Paypal account. Does this has any relation to stopped donations?

I’m not very acquainted with the situation, since I don’t have a PS3. But, for the reason I said above, I certainly plan to buy one soon, despite Sony’s unethical practices.

  4. Jeff says:

Re-blogged for the nz gamers here 🙂 thanks!

  5. bioeve says:

It’s a shame that Sony limited their products so much. The PS3 and PSP. Mostly the PSP. It can obviously do a lot more than Sony wanted it to do. If Sony released these apps and features then they would have made way more money. They’re just mad because they didn’t think of these things first and they want money for it. Probably why they’re suing Geohot.

  6. Lorz says:

I’m definatly agreed Wololo….. i also decided to boycott sony products long ago…….

You might also choose to mention the way Sony has disreguarded OUR privacy by pushing Youtube and geohots web server providers for information reguarding who has watched his videos and who has looked at his website.

  7. acacia says:

I totally agree. I’ve been boycotting Sony every since this started too. I’ve had a couple friends thinking about buying the PS3 and when I told them about the lawsuit they changed their minds. And I was really looking forward to getting Final Fantasy IV: Complete but this has gone way too far. I don’t care if the few sales they don’t get from me do nothing, they’re not getting another dime of my money.

  8. osumaniac says:

    truly great writing

  9. masterfu says:

so you guys are boycotting the american Sony

I wonder what would japanese Sony do

    • Lorz says:

      All Sony, doesnt matter country

      • Shinny says:

Hi GURU Lorz… joke i know that u wont like ppl to call ya like that^^… any way i would like to boyccote sony but im in ukraine and nobody cares about sony so its useless….

        • Lorz says:

hey Shinny ^^ Well every person has to make thier own decision about this…. Sony won’t be seeing any more of my money though I can promise that

  10. akai1987 says:

Well, SONY is mad because the features that they locked is unlockable with an additional charge from them. But hackers did their jobs for free without asking money from PSP owners. Thus, they do not benefit anymore because of this.

  11. Happy says:

    This made me laugh.

Some people just really like to hate on Sony?

Sony isn’t trying to screw people over. They are just trying to prevent things like piracy and the running on homebrew. If people want to claim it’s their hardware and they should be able to do whatever they want with it then they’re wrong. A PS3 is not like a PC and for legit developers to make stuff for it they need to pay for licences. So for people to skip paying things like licences. It’s like claiming you should be able to drive an unregistered car in a sense.

The fact that most of this leads to piracy should be an obvious thing that anyone should understands why Sony wants to stop. After all consoles do rely on sales of software to keep the company running. Because after all a PS3 isn’t like a PC and if it wasn’t for a strong games market people wouldn’t buy them.

    • Lorz says:

Saying that Hacking and homebrew leads to piracy is akin to sayin that life leads to death and therefore any attempts at life must be stopped in order to prevent death…. your argument is illogical and invalid
Freedom eventually leads to crime so therefore all freedom must be stomped out completely before it ever gets a chance to spread.
Creation leads to destruction therefore in order to prevent destruction ALL creation must be stopped.

You can’t seriously believe all of this can you?

    • wololo says:

      We agree to disagree, then

In particular, the fact that you believe that expensive licenses as well as a locked system are a necessary evil to make a platform successful, I disagree with, and I think my article explains my opinion on the subject fairly clearly. Platforms such as Android are proving you wrong, and this is an increasing trend.

      > It’s like claiming you should be able to drive an unregistered car in a sense
No. It’s claiming gasoline stands shouldn’t have to pay a fee to car manufacturers every single time a driver pours gasoline in their car.

Sony should be making money on their hardware and their software. They should offer the PSN system to developers who want to go through it, for a fee. But they shouldn’t prevent other people (for example, developers who want to distribute their software for free) from using another distribution system. Again, look at the Android platform.

The fact that hacking enables piracy is a bad side effect. It is perfectly normal that Sony fights against piracy. But for that, there are laws against counterfeits, and the people being sued should be the people actually committing a crime (those who play counterfeit games), not hackers. Suing geohot is the best thing for Sony from a financial point of view, but it’s not from an ethical point of view.

      > Sony isn’t trying to screw people over.
Read about the Rootkit “incident”, and tell me that again.

    • IolausTheMixer says:

If you don’t like homebrew, what the heck are you doing here?

  12. mu says:

if you don’t like PS3 then buy xbox or wii instead.
i don’t have a PS3 and i don’t have plan on buying one, it is only for rich person who can afford to buy a game for 2000+ bucks.

    • wololo says:

Yes, if I had to make the choice today, I would go with an xbox 360.

      • Lorz says:

wololo I’m so glad that you are one of the few console hacking sites that will speak out against Sonys bullying, and it’s like you said, they’ve been doing this for a long time, bullying thier way around the corporate world…. it’s just now that they have finally struck a nerve(so to speak).

I think every console hacking site on the net should have in big bold letters on the front page of thier site “BOYCOTT SONY”

Unfortunatly i do think they’re going to end up winning this lawsuit….. the courts largly seem to be siding with them……….. even still this lawsuit did them far more harm than good, and i personally would love to see them go down in flames because of this.

      • Caio says:

As a Xbox 360 owner, I strongly discourage buying one.

        Well… whatever.

      • Strider Hien says:

xbox 360 may look cool but it sometimes stops working with no reason and give out 3 red lights.

  13. Tired :/ says:

It’s sad :/ I really love wololo and the news I’ve been getting from this site, but… I’m tired of the Sony hate. Everything they do all I hear is HATE and F* Sony. It’s tiring. When Microsoft no longer allowed unsigned drivers and locked out things with windows 7 I heard no outcry. Yet the world screams in horror (or at least seems to internet wise) when Sony’s blinks.
I don’t care how its spun forging a signature to make the device think “oh Sony approved this” is heading down a bad path. You might as well use mine to sign checks or take a deed out in my name. And then say well they deserved it because “put in reason here” is no justification. You do not answer anger with anger and somehow not expect something bad to happen.
I don’t even bother going to QJ because all you get is pure flaming of Sony.
Maybe you should start calling this a blog instead? I understand you have a right to your opinion. As do I and I would at least like to be warned that the site I am visiting is going to have more posts than not of the owner’s opinion over news. I’ma miss coming to this site as often as I did but hey… In the end my opinion will mean nothing to anyone here. Just another post from a “stupid person siding with Sony” to nearly all and flames will be in the replies to this….

    • wololo says:

I never said my site was anything else than a blog. I’m not giving anybody’s opinion but mine here, and I am not attached to any organization or company. There’s only one person behind this blog, me, and I don’t think I ever said something different. Actually, if you go to the root of this website (wololo.net), you will see that I clearly state that this is my blog.

Now, I’m not hating Sony just for fun. I’ve been a huge supporter of their products for years, and as I said, this lawsuit is the last nail in the coffin for me, after them sc*** me up as an honest customer, too many times (you can dig in the archives if you want).

I’m the first one to scream my hate at Apple or Microsoft when they *** me off, but this blog is mostly about the PSP and Sony, so that’s the reason you don’t see me shouting so much against other companies. Trust me when I say that if I had the free time to rant more about many other companies, I would.

      >I would at least like to be warned that the site I am visiting is going to have more posts than not of the owner’s opinion over news.

I don’t ever recall saying I was a news website. Actually, here’s how I introduced this blog back in 2008, in the first post:

“This is a blog I set up to share my progress on a homebrew game for the PSP.

The name is Wagic, the Homebrew ?!” a.k.a WTH?!”

Of course, with time, this blog evolved into more than Wagic, but I am not a news website. You can clearly see it by the fact that I am one of the people producing the information, not aggregating it.

I hope this clears up some confusion. The articles in my blog ARE biased. If you are not looking for opinionated articles, or articles that just talk about actual psp news without a personal opinion, the official playstation blog, or mainstream videogame websites might be the best solution for you.

I shall add a disclaimer on the site, will add this to my todo list.

I also don’t think this article comes as a big surprise to my readers. If you look at the software I’ve produced (mainly, Wagic and HBL) and my past articles, it is clearly obivous that 1) I am all for open source 2) I am against DRMs 3)I am on the ethical hackers side 4) I am against piracy 5) I’ve always stated that sony’s product would be better for me if they were more open. So it’s not like this post goes in a new direction compared to what I’ve been posting/producing in the past 3 years.

I do not expect all my readers to share my opinions, by the way 🙂

    • MitMakis says:

Im not gonna lie, Im tired of the Sony hate too.
It seems that on every PS3/PSP hacking site, everyone is hating on Sony when a new firmware update is released, they make some statement about the hacking, etc.

So now, I’ve stopped going to places like psp-hacks and PS3SH/PSH, cuz I just facepalm everytime I read the comments (even the articles sometimes).

So screw it, guess it’s time to join the touhou community.

  14. Krozoa says:

I can’t boycott Sony just yet. By the time the NGP comes out, I would have completed my course in C. We’ll see who has the real authority over MY console.

  16. Mewneko says:

O_O woo big article haha. I can kinda see some points here and there but can I just say that as hackers/homebrew-ers the people in it must know there is some risk involved no? And geohotz hack was really, really huge. Now I know once its on the interwebs there’s no way to stop it but when he was doing the interviews and the posts pretty much putting a flag up saying come and get my Sony, shouldn’t he have been prepared that they might lol? Provoke the lion enough he’ll eventually listen to you type thing. The war was fought silently with the firmware updates and newer versions of the psp, but geohotz hack/discovery put that war on a whole different level. There had to be some retaliation on there part. (sorry if I got his name wrong I sleepeh x.x)
I don’t wanna boycott, I sorry I wubs sony’s stuffs lol but I do hope this doesn’t mean this site will go poof D:

  19. IamJustAFool says:

Wololo, you forgot the quasi-racist psp ads saying white is coming and an all white woman about to start a catfight with an all black woman. 😀

I like homebrew thats obviously why I am here, but we would get much better results and less security if the homebrew happened at the end of console life.

Though that obviously won’t occur again given that there are plenty of poor people all over the world who would rather play it sooner.

Sony is effectively recognizing as hackers have said any security made by man can be hacked by man and are seeking legal protection and extraordinary rendition.

Its a nasty vicious circle which would evaporate if more people were patient and weren’t hyped into the gotta have it now.

Sony invested so much money into the blu-ray tech that it nearly bankrupted the company. Its still not super duper hardware as it freezes when it overheats. But it still took a lot of resources, silicon, plastics, metals, people, cumulative decades of technical know-how and lots of money to make it happen.

So if there is a prometheus loader so people can get a rip of a game at a tenth of the price at rental or free as a download its not a good thing for dedicated hardware.

Granted I think copyright is an absurdity as most people would not buy things when they can choose to do something else.

Also Sony is overblowing the case when it assumes that most people don’t want the conveniences of online when in fact they do.

Its a stalemate and I prefer the economic model of free but it does not work in the non-digital world.

    • wololo says:

      Lots of good points.

One argument I like is the “homebrew at the end of the console life”. I think it makes some sense. I think I would be ready to support a manufacturer that can promise to open source the system entirely the day they stop officially supporting it. Of course, so many hackers are interested in the “latest generation” that it probably wouldn’t really work, but on a personal basis, I can definitely relate to that kind of argument.

  20. Universalconsole says:

I already started with the boycott too.

I was saving up to buy the ngp but i decided to buy a 64 gb Ipod touch.

  21. ken says:

I will show my support by not buying the new Xperia phone and wait one year after Sony release the NPG. That will show them. ;D

  22. Beotch says:

I’m suspicious…for some reason I think that Sony posts on topics like this convincing people to become Sony fangirls.

  23. sycaw says:

article like this is just a good one for me to learn english. i like it .

  24. doppio says:

I understand some of Wololo’s points, but calling Sony a bully, thinking they are an evil corp or asking for a boycott is unnecesary and will not bring anything good to the scene. If I were to take sides in this ridiculous fight I’ll be in the side of organized developers who create awesome original works, because the only thing all of us have in common is our love for videogames and technology (I hope).

Hackers are great when they don’t act like rockstars and work as real developers and inventors. Hacking for fame and donations and not for fun, or stealing and breaking others work instead of making something new and useful is lame. I enjoy what they do for people but some hackers (a little portion of them) just look like they are trying to hard to pick a fight with companies in my opinion.

In the especific case of George Hotz, some of his actions were dumb and childish and those are the actions that got him in trouble. Now don’t come bashing at me if you are just a fan, no matter what I think of him I really hope his case ends in good terms (for him and for Sony too).

    • wololo says:

@doppio, you are making very valid points.

I want to emphasize that I am not calling for a boycott of Sony’s products, but I personally took this decision. What other people decide to do is up to themselves. I don’t think my blog, despite its somewhat large audience, will have any major impact on sony’s sales. That being said, I think it’s important to show them that not all their customers agree with what they are doing.

I did use strong words, I tried to moderate them, while sending a strong message. Sony is not evil, but neither is Geohot. On the other hand, Sony are not the representation of Good either, as they have proven many times in the past. I want to make it clear that although hackers’ intentions are not always pure, Sony’s shouldn’t be victimized here, as they are paying for bad business decisions, that had a negative impact on some of their customers (including me, more than once). The locks of the PS3 are definitely pushing the boundaries of the law in many countries.

For the record, what Geohot did is completely legal at least in France (and in Europe), due to the clause for interoperability in the French equivalent of the DMCA. Despite this, Sony are suing some of the failOverflow guys, some of them are European, so it clearly shows that Sony don’t really care about what’s legal or not in this case. This is part of what makes me feel they are a “bully”, trying to frighten the international hackers’ community.

I doesn’t mean Geohot didn’t act childishly at some point, I agree with you on that, but I’m not sure its relevant. Actually, it shows the “bully” side of Sony even more. They couldn’t take the insults of a little brat, so now they’re hitting him hard.

I’m not denying that this hack has a strong impact on piracy. But again, if Sony really wanted to act against piracy, they would sue the pirates, not geohot. They are not doing it, because it is cheaper to frighten 200 hackers than millions of pirates. And this, to me, is a fairly good sign of evil doing.

      • doppio says:

Yes, you have a reason to not to like Sony. In my case I have never got problems with Sony products so that’s why I don’t see them like a big deal and in the other hand I really despise mean hackers and pirates because they screw all we like.

Oh, and I commented about the boycott because of funny comments like this one:

Universalconsole on March 22, 2011 at 2:21 am

I already started with the boycott too.

I was saving up to buy the ngp but i decided to buy a 64 gb Ipod touch.
        ______________________________________________

It’s funny and innocent. Some kids can take your words the wrong way. If you don’t like Sony’s way of doing things it’s probably you don’t like Apple’s ways too.

  25. IolausTheMixer says:

Other than all the other tangible arguments for homebrew, there’s one that stands above all and applies only to Sony: The manufacturers of the console don’t want to improve their products.

Sony is like the realtor who sells you a six bedroom, fully furnished house and tells you that you can only use the living room. They make these fantastically powerful machines, fail to release good software for them and then restrict you from utilising the consoles unused capabilities. I mean, if you’ve got a PSP and you don’t have custom firmware, chances are, after 2-3 weeks, it’s going to become little more than a paperweight.

Same goes with the PS3. I can’t think of any reasons why any one would have bought the PS3 at $600 dollars other than a) they were crazy Sony fans. b) they wanted a Blu-ray player or C) they were Linux-heads like graf_chokolo who wanted to run Linux on it. If you bought the 60GB for reasons b) and c), then Sony eventually sc*** you over. And from the *** they said about taking away Linux, you can see that they don’t give a ***.

If Sony continues like this, by the time the 9th gen of consoles roll by, a Sony system won’t be one of them.

  26. Urahara72 says:

Wololo, I’ve been reading you blog faithfully for about 8 months now (ever since I bought my PSP Go). I was immediately frustrated by the fact that Sony would charge $250 for a system that does not come with any games or backwards compatibility. I was, however, swayed by their limited time offer of the Download and Play package that came with the Go. It consisted of 3 games (Socom 3, LBP, and Ratchet and Clank:SM). But rather than placing the codes on a pamphlet inside the box, they required registration at us.playstation.com and a 7-10 business day waiting period to receive an e-mail containing the download codes. I waited the two weeks, checking my e-mail regularly, and no e-mail. I did a quick search on google and immediately found that I was not the only one who had been overlooked by Sony. Some people reported being told by Sony that their e-mails would arrive in approximately a month to 2 months. So I waited 2 months and still no e-mail. At this point I ad given up on Sony. I purchased several games from the PSN, (Patapon 2, Monopoly, and several others) to bide the time while I waited for LBP. I discovered your blog, new to the PSP scene, and learned about HEN’s. I then realized my mistake in keeping up with Sony’s latest ofw’s. But by the I was too late. I had updated to 6.35. Then I got my christmas gift! VF and CB released their 6.35 Pro! 2 months later I had still yet to receive my e-mail from Sony. Frustrated, finally, I called Sony myself. They proceeded to place me on hold for 8 minutes 3 times in the same call. Exhausted, I finally got my codes for the download only to be disappointed upon playing the games.

I have yet to find a HomeBrew that is not 1)easier to get, 2)easier to play 3)more fun to play and 4)completely free. Theres a much larger support base for every homebrew out there than I could find for any official sony sanctioned game I have purchased. I was actually planning on buying the Xperia Play AND the NGP. Now I’m not so sure. I have been aware of Sony’s lawsuit for awhile, but had no idea there were rumblings that Sony might actually win. My limited understanding of the American Justice system is that many decisions are based off of precedents rather than the laws themselves. If I remember correctly, there was a similar case where the courts decided in favor of the hacker.

Sorry for rambling on like this, but I just wanted to share my story and my views. Thanks for the opportunity and all that you do Wololo.

  27. Vince says:

    Wololo. U are awesome. 😀
I read every word of ur uber long argument and I agree with every word. XD
i also like ur car analogy. =P
Everyone! If you intend on buying sony products, get them second hand so Sony gets nothing!!! >.<
    Long live Geohot!

  28. electrosheep says:

I’m with you Wololo. I was most surprised to find out about the *** they put on some music CD’s a while back, and how they pretended to fix the spyware they installed, but really didn’t. IMHO, this is another case of a serious flaw with capitalism. If a poor person robs the rich, it’s stealing. If a rich person charges poor people outrageous prices for rent, it’s buisness. I have to say a 40,000 euro life insurance policy is insane. Are you looking to cover your entire extended family? Anyway, I hope your family and friends are safe. The Earth must be angry or something, with all the hurricanes and tsunamis and what not.

  29. electrosheep says:

Oh, and I disagree that Sony is not evil. Installing software on other’s computers without their consent is criminal. And Sony got away with it. Talk about getting away with murder. I hope Sony gets what they deserve.

  30. Kris Threat says:

I think this is lawsuit is a sham as well. But I go one step further and wager that even piracy doesn’t hurt Sony’s bottom line that much. I’m the type of person that likes to own the legit physical copy of a game and I don’t condone piracy, but the people that do download games for free represent a group of people that would NEVER have purchases the game anyway. So the argument people are making that his hack hurts Sonys sales of software because it opens up piracy is dumb…because the pirates are most likely the people who (had this hack never been released) wouldn’t buy the games anyway. They never represented any portion of Sony’s pocket. The reverse can also be said. The people who buy games…most likely will be buying them anyway, like me. This can be likened to the music industry with the downloading of MP3s. There is a thrash metal band called Gama Bomb that wanted to do an experiment. They theorized the exact same thing that I said. People who legally buy will continue to do so, and people who download music for free will continue to so regardless. They tested this theory by release a free version of their album online simultaneously with a physical copy in record stores. If the idea that they would lose all sales because something is being pirated was true, then Gama Bomb wouldn’t have recieved the results they did. With a legally free version available online they had an equal number of physical sales versus free downloads. The idea that Sony would lose major sales because hacking opens up piracy is moot.

  31. Cz3 says:

Well I was on the fence up until this point. I’m definitely getting the 3DS now

  32. madeiRa says:

    Hey guyyyzz!

Wow… That was allot to read… took me 30min! LOL!

So after reading all of this, I can understand a tiny little bit of sony’s side, cause of there extreme measures, and I can totally relate to wololo’s opinion.

Piracy is the main reason why people aren’t buying any games AND also cause games are too damn expensive, I mean, I’m not like homeless poor but poor enough and I love my PS3 and what not, but I’m sure not buying a 70$ new game wich may even have a play value of what? 8hrs ? 10hrs? I’m buying second hand ones 20$ worth.

In conclusion, games should be damn cheaper!! PSN wise even…
Oh and leave hackers alonnnee! heck! I’m going back to UNO or MONOPOLY! 😀

    PEACE ^_^

  33. sony can kiss my ass says:

ok, so you stop buying consoles and stuff from sony? on what do you then want to play your games? nintendo? well those console can’t even play bluray and the nds cant really run homebrew. even the gbc emulator sucks. and sinds the nds security was a joke it gues the 3ds has a way better one.

ok, nintendo atleast doesnt lie about their consoles. and the games are pretty good

so its like choose you poison.

but i understand your point and you probaly dont even play that many games. and for dvd/bluray there is more than sony only.

an other weird thing about sony: we have a dvd player but newer dvd-rw just doesnt work exept…. just guess…. the ones from sony. i am not saying this is on purpose but it should not surprise me if it is after reading this. o, and when you send an email to sony they say that we need to buy a new one!!!!

  34. Ymous Anon says:

Stop deluding yourselves, hackers and freedom fighters wannabes. Nobody gives a *** about half hassed homebrew on awful console hardware. The only reason anyone cares about this is PIRACY and that’s it. People want free ***, that’s all there is to it. Nobody cares about your hard work, your “muh freedoms”, your boycott ***, the only thing everyone wants is FREE ***. If you want to make good free programs, get a PC, install a Linux distro on it, and make something good that everyone can benefit from. If you want to make it in handheld form, get an open Android device (funnily enough, Sony are some of the most open when it comes to supporting homebrew devs on their phones) and make some good stuff.

Do you think I or anyone else gives two *** about some kind of awful glitchfest homebrew program on my PS3 or PS4 or Xboner or Wii U or anything when I have a PC that probably has a vastly superior, free way to do that? Do you think I give any *** about homebrew on my PSP or 3DS or Vita when I have an Android smartphone which can do all of that plus a million more things?

    Come on now.

But please, keep on your boycottage because [insert huge corporation here] wants to make money. Boycott everything while you’re at it, there are plenty of companies just as “evil” as Sony if not worse.
Oh and keep deluding yourself people care about you because “freedoms”, I really want to get free *** on my 3DS lately :^)
