Stop Whining.
The recent video posted by Team Typhoon about their “we won’t release it” HEN for the PSP Go has been generating lots of *** for the last few days. I’m ***. I could write this on some forum and add to the hundreds of comments that can be found on MForMature, QJ, or PSPGen.
But I’ve got a blog which allows me to write, complain and whine with other people actually reading what I write, and my post not getting lost in hundreds of others. I rock, ’cause I’m better than you 😛
I’ve read all the comments on the MForumature thread. Yes, all of them. At the time I write this, there are 189 of them. What can I say, I love dramas…
At first I was disappointed that team Typhoon decided not to release their hack, but I believe they have their reasons. As a fellow developer I’ve encountered many times users who treated me like sh#t, forgetting that they were getting hundreds of hours of my work for free. These people, that we can call “ungrateful users” always want more, insult you instead of giving constructive feedback, and are usually the reason devs quit doing their stuff after a while. There are lots of them.
I was then surprised at the reaction of one of the members of Team Typhoon, who basically insulted everyone in the thread, which more or less ruined the point of the whole thing. When you want to prove to others that they are ***, a rule of thumb is to not act like one yourself.
This is when I realized the reason I have been working on Wagic for more than 2 years now. Even if there are lots of “parasites” in the PSP “scene”, there are also lots of great people. In the two years I’ve been working on Wagic, I’ve had the opportunity to work with dozens of very talented people, from various horizons, not necessarily devs. People who give feedback, ideas, help any way they can…
Granted, I’m not a genius hacker, I only code homebrew, there’s way less pressure than for people who work on hacks. But still, my point is that for 100 dumb users, there’s 1 cool guy who’s gonna change your life. And I believe that it’s worth working for that one guy.
Another thing that happens frequently in that kind of drama thread is people stating that “it was better years before”. Actually it wasn’t. There’s always been such drama in the PSP scene. Here’s a quote that I like from the libtiff mailing list . This was posted when the first tiff hack for the PSP was revealed, back in 2005:
If only these people spent as much time on actual good documentation and specification of facts and exact vulnerability, as they do on fighting amongst themselves in SMS type language of wannabee hackers, we’d have a chance to know what is actually going on.
That was the Noobz era back then, and apparently from an external point of view the PSP scene was already full of ***. Yes, there was probably a time when hacking the PSP was more fun and less drama. That was probably when the only way to get one was to be a huge geek with access to japanese imports… in other words, when the PSP wasn’t a mainstream product… like…for the 3 first months after it was out. If you don’t want drama, go to the openpandora. Oh, and stop thinking all the “good devs are gone”. Yes, lots of good devs have moved on. But lots of good ones appeared recently too.
Why is there so much drama in the PSP scene? Well my theory is that the PSP is the most active console in terms of underground. I ran a few funny google searches…note that everyone can use google to backup their claims, so these results are probably worthless, but they’re still interesting:
“psp homebrew” gives me more than 2.3 million results in google. “DS Homebrew” has less than half of it (if you look for “PSP ISO” or “DS ISO” though, the number of results are roughly equivalent :12 and 13 million). I was recently discussing with Magixien, webmaster of PSPGen, one of the biggest “console underground” website out there, who told me that no other console is close to what the PSP scene is in terms of activity.
It is also funny to see that the first results for “DS Scene” and “Wii Scene” in google are sites that promote pirated games downloads. “PSP Scene” gives links to more serious sites that talk about PSP releases, hacks, and homebrews. I won’t give names, try it by yourself. Does it mean that piracy is the main goal for hackers on all consoles but the PSP? Well I doubt it, but it’s still a strange result…
What’s my point you ask? I don’t know, I forgot while I was typing… I guess, it’s: stop whining. If you want hacks for piracy, just go to heck, we don’t like you. If you think the PSP scene was better 3 years ago, nobody’s asking you to stay, you’re spoiling the party. If you think you’re better than others because you’re a hacker or one of their beta testers, just learn humility, it won’t hurt you.
If you disagree with me, I have the power to erase your comments, I’m almighty, muahahahaha… meh, ok, you can post…
Ah well, such drama isn’t exclusive to the PSP scene, I think. It’s probably part of the human nature.
It would probably good for all participants if they took a step backwards and asked themselves two questions:
1. What do I really want to achieve?
2. Do my current actions bring me closer to that goal?
If they did that, they’d probably realize that insulting other people isn’t going to make them work for you, or treat you more nicely. Which goes for both involved parties. However, it seems that too few people have taken this step for a while, this conflict seems to have been brewing for a while. Even the choice of releasing a POC video under these circumstances looks like a rather ill-considered method of expressing (rightfully) hurt feelings now.
Generally speaking: if you fancy waving a tasty chunk of meat in front of a pack of starved dogs, then you shouldn’t keep it to yourself afterwards, or at least you shouldn’t be too surprised / angered / hurt if the reaction is a lot of barking and yapping. On the other hand, the people who do bark and yap might want to ask themselves if human beings really don’t have better options for dealing with such a situation than a pack of starved wolves.
I have no ties to the PSP scene, but hope for the people involved there that somebody has enough influence to raise the voice of reason. Nobody will gain anything by all this lashing about.
Thank you! That’s what I’ve been trying to tell people! haha
Even if there are stupid people, there are tons of great individuals in the “scene” too. I could list about 50 on this page 😉
Anyways, This scene is either practically “dead” to most people, or “a lot of great people with some idiots mixed in”. It all depends on if you look at it with a negative or positive attitude. If anything is truly killing the scene, its the developers who don’t release stuff xD
And I don’t want to list names – but I know who your talking about. BTW, kinda weird out of all people he’s all of a sudden in their “team” , huh? They don’t let anyone in there…
Anyways, nice post. And umm when’s the next Wagic gunna be out? lol jk.

Good writing, wololo!
These people got spoiled by having so much. Now they believe that if a new console is coming out it HAS to be hacked, devs MUST find a way to do it, like it was their work.
We have to understand these people do this as a hobby, we can’t take as a fact that they HAVE to do this, and if there’s something we should do is thank them at least or give some feedback on what you don’t like not just: “this sucks”.
We help the scene by giving bug reports and giving suggestions, not whining and complaining, if you think the scene is dead, help to give it life not killing it more with dumb comments.
As a noob programmer and former leader of a fansub group, I understand the devs’s point of view, it doesn’t feel good to work hard on something and then people just saying: “your releases takes too long”, “the quality sucks”, “- x group – is better “.
i totally agree, people is too ungrateful, and that quite sux…considering nobody ever pays/donate to them. i would LOVE to donate for wagic but…even 5 bucks to me is a lot….i would earn more money i would do without a doubt, seriously. thanks wololo for keeping this updated and free.
Nice Article. i want to be in the PSP scene when i finish UNI but there might be a way better console from sony by then (4 years)
what could i say?…agree.
we need not blame those guys who are barking and whining strongly, because the psp scene is still basically in hackers’hands, not in a few barking guys’.the world is so big ,go on the way yourselt ,no matter what others say.and good luck.
I want you to be able to quickly crack PSP GO
It’s really a matter of respect. Respect ideally should something that goes from user, to developers, to coders all around. Team Typhoon wishes with their last exploit (5.03 hen) were not respected.
Sadly there is a lot of that going on, and seems to be the one thing that remains constant in the psp world. Disrespect towards developers. It’s sure easy to cry when you can’t do something yourself it seems…
Granted we all have our own place to fill in the psp world. You have created a truly epic homebrew game and it only grows with leaps and bounds with every release. I’m sure you have to deal with a lot of disrespect yourself. Seems it’s in the nature of being in development. Keep your head up as you struggle with that. It’s nice to have some place to rant, and glad you have your own little place to do so 🙂
As to mformature I would urge everyone to be very wary of associating with them. When it comes to terms of respect I have seen little to none from them myself. I’ll not continue least I be branded one of the whiners. 😉
I can’t thank you enough for the comment “And I believe that it’s worth working for that one guy.” I couldn’t agree more!
Agreed. Some people think just because there are a few ungrateful whiners, everyone’s out to get them 😛
Teams like Typhoon can whine all they want, but unfortunately, in *all* scenes, disrespecting comes all the time, hey should have scene it coming…
There are hundreds of good people in the “scene”, unfortunately, most of them aren’t the people you see commenting on forums like mformature (and have a good reason not to xD) Usually all the grateful people stay in the background and separate themselves from all the drama.

you said you were a homebrew coder right? that also means developer right? ok im a newbie and i cam up with an idea to make crashes on the psp faster. i origanaly posted it on upsp.ws but now im putting it on a commnet right here. so… since you are a coder maybe you can create a homebrew game file that opens the .tiff .jpg .png etc. file and modifies it very quickly. like say if the originale crash code was AA32323232 then it will modify it to be AA333333333 then AA34343434 so on and so fourth. so after you modified it you go and see if it works, and if it dont just remodify it. so this is the homebrew game app i thought of t help find psp crashes faster. like i said im a total newbie and dont know anything about coding so maybe you can try it out? please reply to this comment or email what you think about it to me!!!
i have come up with a newer way and im not retyping it so please visit upsp.ws to find out what it is. ithink the new way will be even faster and easier to make!
You need to calm down a bit 😉 lol. I didn’t even have time to answer your question on upsp.ws yet xD
Not sure what you mean by “crash code”. Not like there’s some special code that will crash your PSP if you input it into the file..
Its all about looking for vulnerabilities. For example, if you know that there’s a buffer overflow in a pic library on the PC, you may try it out with the corresponding library on the PSP.
Anyways, don’t have time right now but I’ll be back on upsp.ws tomorrow to help you out if needed 🙂
Wow!! Blackthorn in that other thread has got to be, hands down, the most ungrateful SOB I have ever seen online. You have to wonder, is he for real? I can’t help suspect that he’s working for Sony or WotC, and deliberately trying to ruin the homebrew scene.
Wololo, you were an absolute gentleman in that thread.
Wololo to my defense, I was WAAAAY over my ***-taking level when I insulted everyone.
I was wrong, Davee was wrong too. But we have also proved a point.
btw, thanks for Wagic 😉
Wololo. Just to say here and now, I’m forever grateful to you, TN-Noob, and other devs for all of your contribution to the PSP scene. You have no real obligation to continue working but you did anyway. You and every other devs deserve respects far more than any of those ungrateful ingrates.
The problem is definatly there, but maybe there’s a reason for that. There are a lot of things that are changed in the evolution of the PSP, a few years ago hacking was something to be ‘proud’ of. After reading some tutorials, using your mind and sometimes a bit improvising, you were very happy when everything is succeeded. Sometimes you had to do that more than once, it could take a few days to hack your PSP. Also, there was always a existing opportunity that your PSP would brick, it was fully on your own risk.
All that things ‘terrified’ a lot of people who don’t know that much about hacking and such as things. The most of the people who hacked their PSP knew what they were doing, it weren’t some ‘children’. If there are some people asking for ‘ISOs, or function X’, they are mostly the ones who don’t know that much about everything behind it. They don’t know how difficult it can be to program and code this things, so they don’t respect it…
The problem now is that everything is allmost ‘too’ easy, all the guys without ‘respect’ can hack their PSP now. Everything is just so easy, even a monkey can hack his PSP if he wants to. And I didn’t mention all the easy installers, it’s too accessible for them. Everything looks easy, so they think coding is also easy. The only problem is that they are to lazy to learn something and forget the reality. That’s why they asking ‘function X or ISOs’, I’d guess.
I came after the difficult things, but I’ve seen enough of them. I would love it if it was so difficult to hack your PSP, because you can proud of yourself after hacking it. 🙂
Sorry to spoil the lovey-dovey, devs-are-coming-under-fire-party, but if guys like Team Typhoon or Total N00b are too immature to handle the fan-boyism, ungratefulness and general stupidity that naturally accompanies big releases of software, or in fact, any type of product, to a large and diverse crowd of people, then it would be best for the PSP scene if they left. These are the kind of inexperienced noobs who’ll accidentally leave a bug in their software that will end up bricking your console. Bye, Total Noob. Your name suits you well.
Hi wololo! i`m from Argentina,
i know that you are fighting for the remaining 5%
and that possition is the one i like.
but, for several reasons an iso loader is very useful. think about this:
in my job i earn 625 dollars=2500 Argentinean Pesos
and an original game costs 75 dollars(aproximately) = 300 Argentinean Pesos: maybe you dont realize this but, y promise you, this is so much expensive for us
i have a psp 3000 6.37 that i bought month ago. and its costs 1500 argentinean pesos, half of my earns.
and the only game i have is MGS peace walker
actually if sbd has a psp 1000 and a psp go (like a good friend of mine) and he makes isos for his psp go i think it’s legal ’cause he owes those games, but now his younger brother updated his psp to 6.37 because he thought it’s better etc. (yah, my friend was rly *** )
I completely agree with you wololo.
I actually barely ever use isos, and if i do use a iso, its on pc with daemon tools. But most of the time my computer cant run it because it sucks :p. Then I go back, get rid of it, and go think about what ive done in the corner…jk.
But back on topic, I actually understand the devs feelings and reasons. If anyone gets treated badly, I don’t think they would be very nice either. And so they didn’t release the hen. And i have tried developing a game, It takes ALOT of patience and time. And developing homebrew seems alot harder. Im surprised enough that they give their homebrew away for free, seeing as long it takes and its difficulty. But who knows, if the psp scene starts changing their act and be grateful and respectful, maybe they might change their minds. It should’ve been like this in the first place. And sorry for the long letter, its a habit when I (try) to write professionally 😛
i just use tn hen for gta lcs cheat device 😀
all i have to say is, what point is there to showing a video of something like this if you don’t plan on giving it away or selling it 4 that matter? is this just a “look what i have and you don’t thing?” i mean really?
