For some of us, the vita has been out for 5 months now. I could talk about how the screen looks great, how I’m happy that Sony put 2 analog controllers on the device, etc… but I’d rather focus on the things that Sony failed to achieve with the PS Vita. In the past 5 months, customers have been patiently waiting for useful firmware update that never came, or simply being updated on some of the promises that have yet to be fulfilled…

So let’s have a look at the 10 things I think Sony should have done better with the Vita, or that should have been improved in the past 5 months.

A new firmware for PS Vita, version 1.67, is available today. Little is known about it, as no official announcement has been made by Sony so far.

Thanks to OMightyBuggy for the heads up!

Update: this firmware seems to be only containing a minor for Japanese game Dream Club Zero, according to psvitagen.fr. So, nothing really interesting. Thanks to pomopop for the tip.

A while ago I mentioned WTactics in my article on free art for game developers, a trading card game under active development.

Everything, from the card images to the rules, is open source, and welcoming users contributions. One of my hopes for Wagic is to make our engine flexible enough that we will support WTactics one day.

Some of you might be following the activity on the ps3 “scene” quite actively. I am not, as for some reason I decided it was more convenient to stay up to date with OFW on my PS3 rather than even bother. However I follow it from a distance, ’cause, well, I like drama.

The latest piece of news that caught my attention, as reported by ps3hax, is about the True Blue dongle. If you own a PS3, you probably know that it is quite easy nowadays to pirate games on that platform, although it comes at a price. If my understanding is correct, people who have a 3.55 PS3 can install a custom firmware on it, and potentially play backups as long as the game does not require firmware 3.6 or higher (and, obviously, all recent games require a recent firmware).

People contact me regularly to ask why I’m spending time hacking the PSP emulator of the Vita, rather than the Vita itself. Others are wondering why we haven’t seen a true vita hack yet. So, what’s the current status?

Hey everyone, long time no blog!

I’ve been busy recently, trying to help many people porting their PSP Game exploits to VHBL. As I worked on this for the past weeks, it has become a bit clear to me that Motorstorm Arctic Edge and Everybody’s Tennis were both games with “ideal” conditions for porting HBL.

People are now able to update their PS Vita to Firmware 1.66. Firmware 1.66 is probably a simple regression bug fix from Firmware 1.65 unveiled yesterday, to address the “adhoc” issues people were seeing on PSP games.

This firmware patches both Motorstorm and Everybody’s tennis exploits used to run VHBL, as expected. This was also, of course, the case for firmware 1.65. Update at your own risk. Reports also say that SKFU’s Vita pr0xy allows you to spoof your firmware version, in order to access the psn store without updating, so you don’t have to update immediately unless you need all of PSN’s services.

Thanks to everybody who let me know.

You waited for months for a new Vita update? You were expecting more PSP titles, a decent browser, PS1 compatibility, or other cool stuff? Well, how about caps lock support in the keyboard? It’s not enough for you? Come on, caps lock on a keyboard is pretty cool man… Ok then, how about an update that breaks adhoc game on PSP titles?

Davee, who got a PSP HEN running on the PS Vita with the help of devs Some1 and Proxima, is now studying the internals of the PSP Emulator on the Vita. In particular, he is looking at a library called sceKermit, specific to the PS Vita, which is in charge, among other things, of letting the emulator communicate with the PS Vita hardware.

Hey guys, I got information that PS Vita Firmware 1.65 is being made available by Sony right now. I haven’t investigated yet if it patches some of the things we use for VHBL, but most likely it does, so I’ll keep you posted. Here is the official statement:
