Wagic

As we released Wagic a few weeks ago, I announced the “Story Mode”, a mode in which you can write your own campaigns and you own scenarios. A few people started playing with it, and I’d really like to see more cool stuff like this in the weeks to come!

Today I want to introduce Abrasax’s Campaign, Brothers’ war, a brilliant story in which two brothers fight for power and knowledge. The campaign contains a deep scenario, with several dozens of “chapters”. Each chapter of the story takes you to a challenge, which is sometimes an enigma in which you’ll have to use your cards wisely in order to complete it, or sometimes a duel against the AI, with very specific decks.

Overall this campaign is terrific, it will keep you occupied for a few hours (good luck against the Roc, that one is quite complex!) and I hope to see more people creating such entertaining stories in the near future!

Note: there is unfortunately a memory leak in the current version of Wagic, so on the psp you might have to restart the campaign a few times when the game starts to get slow. Don’t worry though, your progress is automatically saved :)

Good news for those of you who are addicted to social networks, thanks to leungclj we finally have a twitter page and a facebook page for Wagic! There you will get the latest info about our cool game, and MTG news once in a while if we feel like talking about it. I know lots of people have been requesting it, so many thanks leungclj.

Have fun!

If you own a unhackable PSP, it is very likely that you are running homebrews through our cool HBL project. Half-Byte Loader has a few issues here and there. One of them is that Wagic (0.12) doesn’t run “out of the box” with it.

It is actually very easy to run Wagic through HBL, there’s only one file to delete.

To run Wagic in HBL, delete or rename the file exception.prx from the WTH folder. Actually, you can delete everything except EBOOT.PBP and the “Res” folder. The game should then start flawlessly on HBL.

Enjoy this short video:

Oh, fans of the HBL project might have noticed that I am now able to come back to the menu and load other homebrews, a feature that people have been expecting for a while…well just teasing you here, it is still work in progress, but it should be available soon :)

Wagic can be downloaded here and it’s the best homebrew ever!

The long awaited release is finally here! It’s been a while, but don’t worry, as usual, it was worth it! I want to especially thank Dr.Solomat, Salmelo and abrasax for being the real people behind the latest Wagic improvements (guys, many thanks for both your involvement in the code and on the forums!). Also Thanks to Ilya B. For the amazing new graphics!

What is Wagic?

Is it still necessary to introduce Wagic? Often compared to commercial games for its replay value and quality, Wagic is a heroic fantasy card game, in which you fight as a wizard against the computer. As you win battles, you unlock new game modes and earn credits that allow you to improve your army. Wagic is community driven, entirely customizable (you can create themes, mods, even new rules), available in several languages, and open source. It currently runs on the Sony PSP, Windows, and Linux.

Changelog

Ok, so what’s new this time? Well, lots of new cards (more than 700 new unique cards, which brings the total to more than 10000 playable cards – almost 5500 unique), some new graphics for the default theme, and a “Story mode” in Beta Version. I’ll talk about the story mode below, but let’s start with a full changelog:

  • More than 700 new cards, including cards from the new extension Rise of the Eldrazi (you’ll surely love those “level” cards!). Thanks to Dr. Solomat, Salmelo, and everybody contributing with ideas on the forum!
  • Additional graphics thanks to Ilya B. (check the cool screenshots above)
  • Story Mode (Beta)
  • Keywords/Parser updates: the parser now handles counters (thanks Salmelo, this allows to code quest cards and similar things), this/thisforeach, triggered abilities improvements, upkeep cost and similar
  • Improved HBL compatibility (you still have to remove the file exception.prx for Wagic to run in HBL)
  • The shopkeeper has new tasks for you. Get ready for more challenge and more credits! (thanks daddy32)
  • Various language updates (thanks to abrasax and all translators – full credits should be in the language files)
  • Countless bug fixes!

Story mode

This release has a new game mode, the story mode. You can give it a try, you will see that the example stories are actually a simple tutorial and a manual for the game. But these are only here to show you the possibilities that exist with the engine. It is now possible to tell an entire story within Wagic. Want to have epic battles with a cool scenario? Then go to the forums and we’ll help you create your own campaigns. The story mode is still very young, but with everyone’s ideas we plan to make it the “main” mode of Wagic. I’m not a good storyteller, but I’ll definitely improve the code if you need something and have interesting ideas! The story mode already allows the player to choose different paths in the story, earn awards for winning battles. New win conditions can easily be written with the rules engine, so you can even design challenging battles such as “win before the end of the turn”, etc…

The story mode is a completely new way to play wagic, but it’s up to you to turn it into THE way to play Wagic :) So give it a try and start writing your own campaign!

(Please note that because of the growing size of the archive file, some themes have been removed from the wagic download. These files will be available again soon in a separate file)

Wagic (lightly modified) loaded on the PSPGo yesterday evening. It worked once out of 10 attempts, and as you can see the “flame” effect is not shown (which means sceRtcGetCurrentTick was incorrectly estimated, which means menus won’t show, which means I couldn’t play). But I’m currently working on rewriting some functions to avoid estimating their syscalls. It might make HBL slow, but will probably improve compatibility.

Incidentally, the latest version of Wagic loads fine with HBL as long as you remove all the mp3 files from the Res/sound folder. It loads best on 5.xx firmwares I guess (mostly because of the high number of syscall estimation failures on firmwares 6.xx). Remember there’s a part of randomness and you might have to try a few dozen times before the game loads perfectly without weird artifacts.

Thanks to psp-hacks.com for the device.

I’m excited to announce a new version of Wagic today, version 0.11.1. We added so many new cards in this version that the numbers don’t make much sense anymore, so you will see that the main menu displays now 2 numbers: the number of cards, and the number of unique cards. Wagic 0.10 had roughly 5100 cards (4000 unique), and Wagic 0.11 ships with around 30 new sets for a total of more than 9300 cards (more than 4700 unique). So if we don’t count reprints, that’s more than 700 new cards for you to play with!

Many thanks go to the team of developers, who are the soul of this project, and to the people who helped during our alpha and beta tests.

What is Wagic?

Wagic is an heroic fantasy card game (currently available for the Sony PSP, Windows, and Linux) in which you fight as a sorcerer with your creatures and spells. As you win epic battles against the CPU, you earn credits that allow you to improve your army, unlock new cards and other game modes. Wagic is open source, community driven, and extremely customizable. It is available in English, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, and French.

Wagic is entirely fan-made, but is frequently compared to commercial games for its replay value and its graphics.

What’s new?

I wish I could summarize this release in a few words, but the truth is, this is once again a release packed with incredible new features. An amazing amount of new cards of course (who said “as usual”?), but also cool improvement such as the card filter, which (finally) allows you to tweak your shop experience, and browse your collection much more easily than before. Windows and Linux users will also love the new “key bindings” feature to be able to setup the keys of the game to their liking. This will also be useful for PSP players who want to switch their circle and cross buttons. Here’s a more complete changelog:

  • More than 4000 new cards, of which 700 are unique. Wagic now has around 9400 cards (more than 4700 unique). Thanks to the card coders, especially Dr. Solomat!
  • New cards database system, which allows to code more cards faster and reduce the number of duplicate bugs (thanks Psyringe)
  • Filter system in the Shop and in the Deck Editor allow you to efficiently buy new cards and search your collection (thanks Jeck)
  • Key bindings to customize your keys (thanks Jean)
  • Simplified translation mechanism for cards
  • Shop improvements (Mixed boosters, price changes, improved booster flexibility)
  • New parser keywords: cantBeBlockedBy, power/toughness qualifiers for targets
  • New tasks in the tasks menu
  • Internal changes to fix compilation issues on linux 64bits and Mac. Wagic should now compile for these platforms with little work
  • Added support for HQ pictures on PC platforms

Wagic started a few years ago as a small homebrew when I wanted to know a bit more about PSP Programming. It has now become a huge project that eats most of my free time, so if you want to show your support, donations are greatly appreciated!

Known issues

Wagic is under constant development, and we believe that players prefer to get new versions regularly rather than wait for a “perfect game” that would never see the day of light. We try to achieve a good quality and remove the most critical bugs before each release, but Wagic will never be perfect :) Check the list of issues here.

Additionally, you will see that translations are incomplete for most languages. It’s difficult for the translators to keep up with the daily changes we do, but I’m confident that language pack updates will be available soon on the forums.

Oh, and this release does not ship with a Linux or a Mac version, we are shorthanded and can’t maintain so many packages, so people who use these platforms have to compile the game themselves for the time being. We might upload binaries for these platforms in the days to come though.
