TN Hen

Yesterday I was contacted by HacKmaN, close friend of Total_Noob who worked with him on TN Hen. It turns out that HacKmaN is the one who released TN Hen for 6.39, after discussing with Total_Noob and making sure they were both ok with the idea. The reason this was released “so” late is that they initially had no plan to release their 6.39 exploit, but since some1′s exploit came up as part of the genesis competition, they decided there was no point in not releasing 6.39 Hen, using some1′s exploit.

HacKmaN made the following additional comments:

Total_Noob released earlier a port of his Hen to some1′s exploit, making TN Hen compatible with firmware 6.39.

CFW 4 Dummies is my ultimate guide for Downgrading/installing Custom Firmwares or Hen on your PSP. It is designed to be as simple as possible while being complete. Given the insane amount of possibilities for PSP owners to install CFW on their machine, I tried to be as straightforward as possible, while precisely describing what each step is doing.

Unlike most guides, I don’t give you a huge post to read, with all use cases, but instead guide you in the process, with a series of questions about your PSP model/firmware and what you plan to do with it. I believe it is quite accessible for newbies, and I do take comments into account. I also try to keep it up to date with the simplest and most mainstream solutions for each situation.

This update adds the latest Pro CFW 6.35 version (I know, it’s about time…), as well as the latest downgrader info for firmwares 6.37/6.38/6.39

Your feedback is appreciated as usual, and it is also time for me to ask a hard question: Are people still using TN Hen? I am currently maintaining my guide with both 6.20 TN Hen, and 6.35 Pro CFW, but merging all of this into one single solution will definitely help… So, which Hen are you guys using?

In less than 24h, some1 updated his downgrader to be compatible with all PSP models. People with a 07g or a 09g will be able to downgrade to 6.35, while others can go down to 6.20. This will let you install either TN’s Hen, or CFW Pro

Update: this has been confirmed by many trusted sources to be real and working. We also confirmed that this entry is accepted in the Genesis competition

I usually test those things before blogging about it, but this is huge news, some1 is a respected dev, people have reported success with it, and I’m stuck at work with my pspgo without the stupid proprietary cable. So I can’t test it right now, but I’ll report it anyways.

Developer HacKmaN, who works closely with Total_Noob on TN Hen, just released a video showcasing TN Hen on a 6.38 OFW.

A few weeks ago, Total_Noob had announced in this interview that he was investigating Kernel exploits on the latest firmware. He then confirmed he was onto something, by showing a video running a kernel exploit POC on a PSP running OFW 6.38.

Today this video shows that porting TN Hen to the latest firmwares seemed like a piece of cake for this talented dev.

In the interview, as well as in his recent videos, Total_Noob (and HacKmaN) stated that this Hen would not be released because of the scene’s attitude towards developers and the whole debate about isos.

Comments about the video on youtube show a mix of angry people, people who promise that 6.38 users are not pirates, that they will “behave”, but we all know how it goes: as long as Hen does not support piracy, “nobody” cares about it, and most of the ones who care just come to insult the lack of iso support.

Total_Noob is now following the path of Davee and Team Typhoon, who had a working Hen on firmware 6.20 more than a year ago, but never released it because of the scene’s attitude.

As far as I’m concerned, I’ve been in the scene long enough to know this: the scene is made of 95% of morons who are in this only for piracy. I fight for the remaining 5%.

As you probably know, firmwares 6.37 and 6.38 allow you to play “regular” homebrews through HBL, as well as “signed” homebrews, including some backups with the fake_np tool. But these two firmwares cannot run Custom Firmwares or HENs, which offer a much more “integrated” experience, as well as the support for custom themes and plugins. In order to run a CFW, a Kernel exploit is required, and the Kernel exploit that is used on firmwares 6.20 and 6.35 has been patched by Sony in firmware 6.37.

However, Developer Total_Noob announced via a video on his youtube Channel that he found a new Kernel exploit on firmware 6.38.

The video doesn’t show much, and a user-mode fake homebrew could do the same, but given the source I’m inclined to say that this is legit :)

Total_Noob states in his video that he has no current plan to release anything for now, so let’s wait a little bit :)

Feel free to discuss this breakthrough in the dedicated thread onĀ  /talk

As promised, Total_Noob is back with a new version of his Hen. If you don’t know yet what a Hen is, HEN stands for Homebrew Enabler, and is basically a system that allows you to run fan made games, emulators, and plugins on your PSP. The major improvement of this release is a menu where you can configure your plugins, based on Bubbletune’s Game Categories plugin.

The other features described in the changelog should not surprise you too much, as Total_Noob announced them a week ago in this interview.

I’ll quote the changelog:

  • - Added ‘TN Settings’ option to the XMB where you can adjust your configurations and plugins (based on Bubbletune’s Game Categories).
  • - Added OSK Character Limit Increase (the Internet Browser OSK only supports 512 characters. This patch allows you to use 1518 characters).
  • - Added password control at startup (change password in ‘Security Settings’).
  • - Added sceUmdMan_driver patch (umd4hombrew is not necessary anymore).
  • - Added ability to access flash0, flash1, flash2, flash3 and UMD Disc via USB.
  • - Added PSX multi-disc support.
  • - Added possibility to hide hen eboot in the game menu.
  • - Added version.txt display.
  • - Added more functions to kubridge library.
  • - Cloned more NIDs wich Sony removed in 6.20.
  • - Fixed bug that didn’t show ‘Memory Card Utility’ in pops.
  • - Fixed syscall execution in kernel mode (thanks to neur0n).
  • - Redesigned NID Resolver.
  • - Updated NID Table.
  • - Improved plugins compatiblity: PSPConsole, Macro Fire, Custom Firmware Extender, Brightpad, Battery Warning Plugin and many more!

Recently I interviewed Coldbird and Virtuous Flame, the creators of CFW Pro. It is now time to take a look at the other side of the force. As you may or may not know, all the Custom Firmwares / Homebrew Enablers for recent firmwares rely on the same base: a Kernel vulnerability discovered and exploited by Total_Noob a few months ago. Total_Noob used this exploit as the base for his largely used Homebrew enabler, TN Hen.

I had the opportunity to chat with Total_Noob about his ongoing projects for the psp, so read along if you want to learn about the upcoming features for TN-HEN E

Between my trip to China and the Japan earthquake, I’ve been a bit slow in catching up with the CFW/HEN news. Some of the main pages of this blog were slightly out of date, but I decided to catch up today.

The CFW For Dummies guide is now up to date with info and download for TN Hen D, CFW Pro 6.35 B3, as well as more relevant information for 6.37 owners. Up-to-date basic information on how to play backups and homebrews on the latest firmware is now available. I also tried to answer some of the questions in the comments. What’s a bit disturbing is that some people are asking questions for which the answer is usually one click away, so I tried to reply as much as I could with simple links.

CFW For dummies is my attempt at making Custom Firmware / Hen installation as simple as possible for most people, while being detailed enough for people to understand what they are doing. It is focusing on the user’s point of view with a series of simple questions (what’s your psp model, what’s your firmware…), rather than a huge list of solutions for all firmwares in one single page.

I also updated the Download page for TN Hen with the TN Hen D, and the page dedicated to CFW Pro 6.35, with Pro 6.35 B3.

I’m kinda late on this one, but you guys know that you can always get the latest information on /Talk even when I’m not around ;)
