People are now able to update their PS Vita to Firmware 1.66. Firmware 1.66 is probably a simple regression bug fix from Firmware 1.65 unveiled yesterday, to address the “adhoc” issues people were seeing on PSP games.

This firmware patches both Motorstorm and Everybody’s tennis exploits used to run VHBL, as expected. This was also, of course, the case for firmware 1.65. Update at your own risk. Reports also say that SKFU’s Vita pr0xy allows you to spoof your firmware version, in order to access the psn store without updating, so you don’t have to update immediately unless you need all of PSN’s services.

Thanks to everybody who let me know.

You waited for months for a new Vita update? You were expecting more PSP titles, a decent browser, PS1 compatibility, or other cool stuff? Well, how about caps lock support in the keyboard? It’s not enough for you? Come on, caps lock on a keyboard is pretty cool man… Ok then, how about an update that breaks adhoc game on PSP titles?

Davee, who got a PSP HEN running on the PS Vita with the help of devs Some1 and Proxima, is now studying the internals of the PSP Emulator on the Vita. In particular, he is looking at a library called sceKermit, specific to the PS Vita, which is in charge, among other things, of letting the emulator communicate with the PS Vita hardware.

Hey guys, I got information that PS Vita Firmware 1.65 is being made available by Sony right now. I haven’t investigated yet if it patches some of the things we use for VHBL, but most likely it does, so I’ll keep you posted. Here is the official statement:

I’m catching up on SKFU’s recent releases, as I was myself busy with VHBL. A week ago, SKFU released “Vita pr0xy”, which is now updated to version 1.0.1. This is a network proxy (runs on windows), so basically an intermediate between your devices and your internet connection. Although this is a general purpose proxy, SKFU designed this tool specifically for the PS Vita. It can filter out some specific requests, sniff the traffic between your Vita and the network, can do URL replacement, and as a bonus, fixes some malformed requests sent by the Vita.

Following my wise piece of advice, Sony pulled the Game Everybody’s Tennis from their online stores, apparently worldwide. Again, sadly, some of you probably couldn’t buy the game in time, but here’s to hope for another port of VHBL in the near future.

For those of you who were lucky enough to get Everybody’s Tennis in time, the release of wth’s port of VHBL will happen shortly.

Dear Sony, it has come to my attention that one of the PSP games available on the playstation Vita has a vulnerability that could lead to the execution of external code by some malicious users. Therefore I am writing this blog post so that you can patch the game or remove it from the PSN store as soon as possible. Preferably, I suggest you take the money from your clients first, and prevent them from downloading the game afterwards, just like you did with Motorstorm Arctic Edge, 3 weeks ago. This way it will be a win-win situation for you, and you can always blame it on the hackers later on.

A few weeks ago, I released a fully working homebrew loader running in the PSP emulator of the Vita, thanks to the exploit from Teck4 and to the portability of VHBL. Sadly, despite my attempts at letting a high number of people know about the exploit in a minimum amount of time, lots of you missed the opportunity, as Sony removed Motorstorm from their store within hours following my public announcement. But we’re back with a new game and a new version of VHBL, thanks to the work of developer wth. As wth himself announced on /talk, we have been busy getting ready with the release of the next VHBL (he’s done most of the work, with also some help from Teck4 for the JP exploit, I am just announcing the release and was not directly involved in the exploit or the port), using a new game.

Famous PSP dev Davee just posted a youtube video showing him running PSP homebrews on a Vita. I initially thought “well, not a big surprise, he’s running his own port of VHBL to some random exploited game”, but it turns out this is much more interesting than that, as he managed to get a PSP Kernel exploit running on the PSP Emulator. Davee had hinted a few days ago on twitter that he had PSP User mode access, but it’s a surprise to see Kernel mode today. What this means to the end user is full homebrew compatibility (unlike VHBL which is hit and miss), and potentially down the road, PSP iso loaders (the video actually shows a psp iso running the video shows a regular PSN game being loaded from the launcher) . Check his video below:
